Four sports betting apps are open for business in the state of Nevada. While land-based casinos around the state have shut down, some online gambling options remain in the state.
Last week Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak suggested that non-essential businesses, including casinos, close to help slow the spread of coronavirus. The request was changed to an order as the week came to an end.
There are still some sports wagering apps open for wagering, however. Nevada Gaming Control Board research analyst Michael Lawton told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that “mobile sports betting apps are allowed to continue to operate” even as the retail casinos are closed.
The majority of sportsbooks have decided to close their sports wagering apps along with the brick and mortar property but there are a few still standing:
Players registering for a Nevada mobile sports wagering account must sign up for an account at the sportsbook inside of a casino. Once they have an active account, a customer with funds in the account can place a wager.
If there’s a need to fund an existing account, three of the four apps can be funded via mobile. Circa Sports is the only mobile sports wagering app that doesn’t allow funding via a mobile device.
As of today, players may still fund a William Hill account at 7-11 stores.
What are people betting on?
There aren’t many traditional sports taking place right now. The NBA, NHL, MLB have all postponed their seasons. Despite the lack of major American sports live there are still games happening around the world. The options are certainly different from the normal US sports betting menu.
The sportsbooks are offering wagering on soccer, Australian Rules Football, and Rugby. That’s about as traditional the sports that are being played right now. While not mainstream American sports, these have been offered previous to this month.
Nevada sports bettors are seeing more non-traditional sports offered from the various sportsbooks. Over the weekend, William Hill offered odds on Haru Basho 2020 sumo wrestling. This week the international sportsbook operator is offering odds on Men’s and Women’s table tennis (AKA ping pong) matches.
Circa Sports is also exploring new wagering options for Nevada sports bettors. Over the weekend, Circa attempted to offer wagering on the eNASCAR iRacing Pro Series Invitational but the Nevada Gaming Control Board didn’t allow it. According to Gaming Today, future eNASCAR wagering could be approved.
Live sports is just one way people are betting on sports in Nevada. Last week Circa Sports became the first sportsbook in the state to release NFL season win totals. Some of the NFL season win totals and odds on those totals have changed at Circa Sports because there are people placing wagers. William Hill has since released NFL season win totals.
Circa Sports isn’t the only sportsbook in Nevada looking to the future. March Madness was canceled this year but William Hill is already out with odds to win the NCAA basketball championship next year. Circa Sports is also getting creative with NFL futures wagering options. The sportsbook operator recently added a handful of Tom Brady prop bets for his first season in Tampa Bay. Caesars and BetMGM also have futures available for football and other sports while taking wagers on non-traditional sports.
