Event 20: $3,200 NLHE High Roller (July 20)

Sang “youngkoi” Lee took down this event on Tuesday night, his first bracelet and $241,768. The event attracted 311 entries for a $948,840 prize pool.

The accomplishment was no easy task for New Jersey’s Lee. He had to bypass a final table of of other Garden State online powerhouses.

That included David “Dehhhhh” Coleman, Daniel “Juice” Buzgon, and Christopher “Basile28” Basile. Basile is currently the top online player in the United States.

Buzgon is also no stranger to online success. USPoker recently caught up with him about his runner-up finish and recent success in the partypoker Ultimate Super Satellite.

“I haven’t had the best track record over the years in bracelet events so making a run like that feels pretty good,” he says. “Getting second in any tournament let alone a WSOP bracelet event can be depressing if you let it. I obviously wasn’t feeling great after busting, but then reality starts to set in a few hours later and you realize how insane you ran to get to that point.”

Event 21: $600 PLO Six-Handed (July 21)

Bradley “DrStrange7” Ruben added his second bracelet came to him Wednesday night along with $61,148. The tournament drew a field of 1,551 and a prize pool of $297,540.

Bradley Ruben’s first bracelet came in a $1,500 Pot Limit Omaha event in 2020 at GGPoker. Other notable cashes included Ari “PalmTreeB” Engel, Shannon “Aulophobia” Shorr, and Andrew “Watchguy42” Lichtenberger.

Event 22: $600 NLHE Knockout (July 22)

A player by the online name “LastBullet” outshot Daniel “Dnegs” Negreanu on the final table of the $600 Knockout Thursday night. The event brought in 612 players and a prize pool of $342,720.

LastBullet scored $46,796 for the win. Ryan “badbeatbill” Basile finished in second place for $28,708.

A possible Negreanu bracelet win drew plenty of interest among poker fans online. He streamed his play at the final table, eventually taking third for $19,851.

Upcoming WSOP bracelet events:

WSOP.com will offer a full range of games over the next few days. That includes a high roller, Pot Limit Omaha, and a MonsterStack.

Tracking Catena poker team battle

The race continues for the Catena poker team standings over the last week. Content manager Valerie Cross remains in the top spot. Runner-up finishes by Joon Kim and Jonathan Dokler have helped her add a couple $5,000 bonuses to her total.

However, USPoker editor and site runner Sean Chaffin snagged a nice score over the last week. Dan Buzgon notched a runner-up, adding $154,380 to Chaffin’s total. Cross still holds a hefty lead however, and he’ll need more scores like that to get back in it.

Here’s a look at the action so far:

  1. Valerie Cross – $262,326
  2. Sean Chaffin – $171,453
  3. Anthony Cicali – $27,681

Borgata Ambassador Daniel Buzgon Scores In Partypoker Ultimate Satellite; Almost Adds WSOP Online Bracelet

Turning a thousand bucks into five figures makes for a good day. That was the result of partypoker US Network’s Ultimate Super Satellite for New Jersey online grinder Dan Buzgon.

In June, the online poker event gave players a shot at a $1,060 satellite event for a Vegas live tournament package. Buzgon jumped into the action and was one of those who won a tournament package.

“Being one of the three fortunate players obviously felt great,” he told USPoker. “I had already planned to go out to Las Vegas prior to winning so it was just an added bonus.”

If that weren’t enough, Buzgon recorded a massive score on Wednesday in the World Series of Poker Online.

Jersey to Vegas via partypoker

Buzgon, an ambassador for Borgata Poker, has more than $2.3 million in live

Dan Buzgon at a WPT final table in Las Vegas.

tournament winnings. No stranger to tournament success, his trophy collection includes eight WSOP Circuit rings.

Four World Poker Tour final table appearances also highlight his poker record. After qualifying on partypoker, Buzgon used his Ultimate Satellite score to enter the $10,000 Wynn Millions

The event attracted a big field of pros, drawing 1,328 entries and a massive $12.5 million prize pool. While he didn’t come out on top, Buzgon finished 125th for $25,091 – quite a return on investment.

Overall, the Ultimate Super Satellite produced three winners among a player pool of 59 in New Jersey. In addition to Buzgon, “FitzroidPoo” and “lIlbILLYmAC” also won tournament packages.

In Michigan, the event included 89 players and these players also earned Las Vegas tournament entries:

  • Farmhand
  • Mentalist
  • LouisD60

Appealing to more players

The network just wrapped up the Online Series in New Jersey. The festival is now underway in Pennsylvania and Michigan.

The platform also recently launched a $50,000 Invitational Freeroll for regular players in New Jersey. The tournament plays out on Sunday.

Buzgon is pleased to see these events appealing to players of all levels. The Ultimate Satellite offered numerous opportunities for players of all bankrolls. He believes that kind of marketing and creativity can be key for US regulated poker.

“I thought the promotion was a great idea,” he says. “Whether you were going to just take the cash or actually fly out to Vegas for these intended events, it’s a great way for a lot of players who wouldn’t normally play this high a buy-in to take a shot. Party ran a ton of satellites for as low as $5 to give as many players a chance to get in the tournament as possible.

“The promotions party runs target not only your everyday player, but also your casual player. It was great to see the number of players in all of the smaller buy-in satellites leading up to the $1K event. It will help going forward to show that there is a market out there and we just have to continue to be creative in finding ways to reach all of the players.”

Buzgon also comes close to a WSOP bracelet

After scoring in Vegas, it was back to the online grind in July for Buzgon. After minimal success so far in the WSOP Online, he finished runner-up in the $3,200 High Roller for $149,386.

Another New Jersey player, Sang Lee, took the bracelet and $241,768.

Despite coming up just short for his first bracelet, Buzgon took the finish in stride.

“I haven’t had the best track record over the years in bracelet events so making a run like that feels pretty good,” he says. “Getting second in any tournament let alone a WSOP bracelet event can be depressing if you let it. I obviously wasn’t feeling great after busting, but then reality starts to set in a few hours later and you realize how insane you ran to get to that point.

“I ran just about as good as one can run deep in a big tournament, so it’s tough to get too down on coming up a little short of the bracelet.”

Buzgon plans on getting in the action in more partypoker events as well. He may have missed out on some gold, but don’t count him out yet. Plenty of bracelet events remain.

Nevada Casino Gaming Revenue Breaks 14-Year Single Month Record

There is nothing like breaking a record. Just ask the Milwaukee Bucks. The franchise recently broke a 50-year record after defeating the Pheonix Suns to win the 2021 NBA Finals.

While it’s not five decades, Nevada did shatter a 14-year single-month record in May by recording $1.23 billion in gaming revenue.

Nevada casinos have a record-setting month

According to figures released by the Nevada Gaming Control Board, the $1.23 billion generated was a 25.3% increase from May 2019. The gaming board has been comparing data to 2019 statistics since all casinos were shut down in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The previous single-month high for Nevada casino revenue was in October 2007, when the state recorded $1.165 billion in gaming revenue.

Michael Lawton, a senior research analyst for the NGCB, told the Nevada Independent, the May numbers could be attributed to record-breaking slot machine revenue and the baccarat business.

  • Slot machines: $358.3 million
  • Baccarat: $105.9 million
  • Other gaming: $655.5 million

Nevada sports betting also has a good month

On top of a stellar month for slot machines and baccarat, Nevada sports betting also reaped the benefits of a strong May.

Sportsbooks recorded $477.4 million in betting handle an increase of 4.9% reported in April. Sports betting revenue was $27.1 million, which translated to $1.8 million in state taxes. Of the amount wagered, 62% were from online or mobile sports betting accounts.

One key metric to look out for is Nevada sportsbooks are on pace to surpass $1 billion in sports betting revenue in the next few months. The current total sits at $964.2 million.

Other contributing factors for a strong summer

These figures are due to the pent-up demand of travelers seeking sun and fun after a brutal 16 months of the COVID-19 pandemic. Given its hotel deals, new attractions, and many direct flights, Las Vegas is again booming as one of the top vacation destinations.

Although the billion-dollar casino revenue record is impressive, Nevada still isn’t at full strength. Several other components are missing from the Las Vegas strip, like international travel and its convention business, that could keep the streak going.

May marks the third month in a row the state has surpassed $1 billion in revenue, and experts anticipate it won’t be the last.

Chad Beynon, a gaming analyst for Macquarie Securities, said he expects the results to continue into the summer months, especially given the draw of new properties such as Resorts World.

In a research note, Beynon said, “Looking ahead, although a traditionally weaker month of the year, June hosted two noticeable events, the World of Concrete, the (city’s) first major convention on June 8-10, and the Resorts World Las Vegas opening on June 24, the first major opening on the Strip in more than 10 years.”

The convention business in Las Vegas is scheduled to return, with many bookings now firmly on the calendar. (Along with Las Vegas’ other bread-and-butter: concerts and shows.) However, international travel continues to move at a much slower pace.

McCarran International Airport passenger volume was down 41.7% in May compared to the same month in 2019. Additionally, McCarran only recorded 50,258 international passengers for May — all from Mexico.

Online Poker Operators Experience Small Drops in Revenue, Numbers Remain Steady Overall

The bad news for US online poker operators is that revenue dropped slightly overall for June. The good news is these numbers still remain historical highs and the market hasn’t experienced a massive decline from those highs.

The US market continues to focus on expansion, adding major tournament series, and further promotion. Operators including WSOP.com are opening up in new states and continue to push for more regulated markets.

Online poker is currently legal in:

  • New Jersey
  • Pennsylvania
  • Michigan
  • Nevada
  • Delaware

New Jersey numbers take small hit

The Garden State took a small dip in June. Online poker operators brought in $2.2 million, a slight fall from $2.4 million in May. In New Jersey, there are currently three operators:

WSOP.com continues to hold on to the top spot in New Jersey. According to the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (NJDGE), the site reported revenue of $891,872. This number was down from the $919,526 in June however.

WSOP.com should have a big month ahead as major online events take place on the site throughout July. The operator is hosting a Summer Online Circuit, Online Championships Series, and the WSOP Online bracelet series.

WSOP.com remains the only operator offering shared liquidity with Nevada and 888poker in Delaware.

Partypoker US Network saw a small decline month over month, down about 5% from May. The operator brought in $732,987 in revenue.

The site continues to build upon its successful monthly Online Series and continues to hold a steady number of players. Partypoker is also offering big promotions to help players stay in the action, including a $50,000 freeroll in July.

PokerStars saw the biggest drop in reporting during June. The site reported $584,515 in June, down from May’s report of $719,706.

Three more New Jersey live poker rooms reopen

Cash games are currently the only option for players at Atlantic City brick and mortar casinos. Players are anxiously awaiting the return of tournament play and the reopening of other poker rooms in the city.

Poker rooms currently available in Atlantic City include:

  • Borgata
  • Harrahs
  • Tropicana

NJ online gaming in a nutshell

In June, New Jersey reported $107.1 million in Internet gaming revenue, up from $97.6 million a year ago. BetMGM brand remained in the top spot among online casino operators for the fourth month in a row.

BetMGM continues to show growth as it brought in $34.3 million compared to $27.6 million for Golden Nugget

Overall, NJ casinos posted $39.9 million in total gaming tax revenue for the state. Gaming taxes represent 8% of taxable casino gross revenue and 15% of Internet gaming gross revenue.

Revenue dips in Pennsylvania, WSOP.com goes live

Pennsylvania saw a small drop in poker numbers for the month of June. The Keystone state reported $2.4 million in revenue, slightly down from $2.6 million in May.

Even though numbers are down, Pennsylvania has managed to stay number one in the US for regulated poker. The state has overtaken New Jersey as the leading regulated online poker state for multiple months now.

The big news however is the launch of WSOP.com in PA. Revenue numbers may see a boost in July as the site is launching WSOP Online bracelet events in August.

The US online poker market received some welcome news on Monday with WSOP.com announcing a launch into Pennsylvania on July 12.

Competition grows in the state and expect to see more promotions from the recently-launched BetMGM and Borgata Poker. Both are part of partypoker US Network. PokerStars brought in $2 million for June and remains king in the state.

Currently, there are three online poker options in the Keystone state:

  • PokerStars
  • partypoker US Network – Borgata Poker and BetMGM skins
  • WSOP.com

According to the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB), online gaming overall generated gross revenue of $88.9 million in June. That’s a huge increase from $50 million in June 2020.

Internet poker alone has generated more than $4.6 million in tax revenue for the people of the commonwealth in 2021.

Live poker rooms in PA are now running poker tournaments again. Rivers and Live! Philadelphia recently began hosting daily events again. The following live poker rooms are now open:

  • Parx Casino
  • Mohegan Sun Pocono
  • Mount Airy Casino Resort
  • Rivers Casino Philadelphia
  • Rivers Casino Pittsburgh
  • Meadows Racetrack and Casino
  • Philadelphia Live Casino

Michigan revenue drops slightly

Operators in the Wolverine State reported $89.2 million in gaming revenue for June. Even though there was a small drop, June sports betting revenue saw an increase to $25 million. This is up from $19.4 million in May.

“Michigan’s gross internet casino gaming and online sports betting wagering receipts in June roughly matched May,” Michigan Gaming Control Board executive director Henry Williams said in a news release.  “Summer is here, and Michigan is reopening after the pandemic restrictions so there are many entertainment opportunities.

“The slight tenth of a percent decline from May to June shows internet gaming and online sports betting continues to draw Michigan residents’ and visitors’ interest.”

Michigan regulators combine all online casino gaming revenue and don’t separate out statistics for online poker. There are currently two operators in the state:

  • PokerStars
  • BetMGM (part of the partypoker US Network)

BetMGM led the state in online gaming gross revenue with $33.7 million. FanDuel came in second with $14.8 million, down from May’s report of $16.3 million.  As in NJ and PA, BetMGM in Michigan is currently promoting the monthly Online Series.

Operators delivered about $14.6 million via tax revenue including:

  • Internet gaming taxes and payments – $13.7 million
  • Internet sports betting taxes and payments – $927,575

Currently six brick and mortar poker rooms have re-opened within state borders including:

  • MGM Grand Detroit
  • Motor City Casino Hotel
  • Greektown Casino-Hotel
  • Odawa Casino Petoskey
  • Firekeepers Casino Hotel
  • Island Resort & Casino

Major decline for online poker revenue for Delaware

Delaware online poker saw about a 15% decrease in June’s report. The First State showed total revenue of $31,999 for June. This was the lowest reported month in 2021 so far.

According to the Delaware Lottery, iGaming in general reported $843,117 in June for overall online casino gaming.

888poker continues to be the only operator in the state. The poker platform offers three different skins in partnership with the state’s racetrack casinos including:

  • Delaware Park
  • Dover Downs
  • Harrington Casino and Raceway

Month after month, Delaware Park continues to be the number one site with June revenue of $16,921. Dover Downs was the only site to see a small increase and holds second place with $8,485.

At the moment, Delaware Park is the only live poker room to reopen since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. The property opened on June 15 with operating hours from 11 am to 3 am daily.

View: Pro Poker Player Visits Live! Casino Philadelphia for Start of Daily Tournaments

Anthony Cicali is a freelance writer from Riverside, New Jersey. He’s also a Twitch casino streamer and a professional East Coast poker player. You can follow his gambling adventures on Twitter @Eatahoagie.

Opinions expressed in this article are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect those of PlayPennsylvania.

On Monday morning, I got to visit Live! Casino Philadelphia for the start of their daily poker tournaments. Even though the casino opened the poker room in February, it was only cash games up until now.

I jumped in the action for the first tournament and was overall pleased by the smoothness with which the daily tournament ran. A lot of players were happy to be back in a live tournament. For some players it had been a long time since their last tournament.

“This is my first tournament since pre-COVID,” says Jack Thomas, a poker player from Deptford, New Jersey. “I used to travel to Delaware Park and play three tournaments a week, but now I am only 15 minutes from Live!”

I walked in and quickly realized that tournament registration is at the front desk in the poker room and not at the cashier. Players received a nice new beach towel for registering.

The tournament kicked off right at 11:15 a.m. as advertised and ran as if they have been running events for years. The players were excited to be back on the felt.

One player who wished to remain anonymous said:

“I am just happy to not be wearing a mask and out playing poker in a tournament again.”

Live! Casino Philadelphia poker tournaments start

Currently, Live! Casino Philadelphia has more poker tournaments scheduled than any other casino in Pennsylvania. Poker tournaments at Live! Casino Philadelphia are scheduled to run daily in the mornings, with additional evening tournaments Sunday through Wednesday.

Many poker players expressed frustration that poker tournaments have not come back yet to other casinos in the area.

“I really enjoyed the Parx tournaments,” says Richard Waldman, a poker player from Riverside, New Jersey. “But until they come back, I am going to check out the tourneys at Live.”

I spoke to the floor manager and they advised me that as of last night, all the structures for each daily event are now posted on their website. Copies of the structure sheets are also laminated at the front desk.

The field closed registration after level 6, and they got 92 runners today. The prize pool was way over $5,000 in total.

Solid staff and stacks make tournaments worth the visit

Some other positives that were encountered today were:

  • Players receive 50 cent p/h comps for playing tournaments.
  • Tournaments are located near the bathrooms.
  • All dailies have double starting stacks or greater.
  • Staff was well-versed and capable of handling a daily tournament.

I heard only a few negatives when talking to players on my tables.

  • At the moment, there is no set guarantees on any tournaments.
  • A few players were complaining the 5,000 chip looked too similar to the 100 chip.
  • Unfortunately, smoking is back in the casino (although not in the poker room).

Even though I didn’t cash and ended up eight players out of the money, I still thoroughly enjoyed playing at Live! for their first tournament offering. I look forward to going back for another one.

Legendary Layne Flack: Phil Hellmuth Reflects On Loss of His Friend

Editor’s note: Layne Flack passed away on Monday and Phil Hellmuth reached out to USPoker to offer his reflections about his longtime friend.

My old friend Layne Flack was a six-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner and one of the biggest and best personalities in the poker world.

He was universally loved in our poker world, and one reason was this: if he sensed that you were mad at him, or heard that you said something bad about him, then he came straight to you. He found you, walked up to you, and talked to you mano a mano.

None of this passive aggressive BS with Layno! If you were mad at him, it didn’t last long, as he would charm you and get to the bottom of any issues quickly. I always respected the fact that Layno tried his hardest to maintain good relationships with everyone.

Big personality, plenty of friends

When it came to having a quick wit, there was Layno! He would make you laugh about anything, even serious matters. He was lightning quick, and so fun to be around! A friend of mine told me that the back and forth between him and Layno was as sharp as ever as they went at each other over the last few weeks.

Layne, Ted Forrest, and I spent quite a lot of time together back in the day, including a trip to Baden, Austria, in October 2000 to play in the “Poker EM” Seven Card Stud tournament, followed by a stop in Paris for another tourney.

Layne could own a room, and became fast friends with everyone we met.

Skills at the poker table

Layne’s poker game was even sharper than his amazingly sharp wit! He was ranked number two in the world in No Limit Hold’em tournaments when the first rankings came out in the late 1990s in Poker World magazine.

I said back then that Layne was my toughest opponent. He was impossible to bluff! I remember one WSOP tournament where he and I were chip leaders with 17 left. He put in the fourth bet with just an eight on a 9-9-8 board. Risking his entire stack with just an 8!

Of course, I was bluffing, but he knew that somehow. Then after moving in a mountain of chips, he showed it to me proudly.

I remember thinking, “If you try to bluff this guy again, then you’re an idiot.”

He was fearless! That brilliant poker game of Layne’s led to six WSOP bracelets.

Success beyond poker

Layne shot multiple perfect games of 300 in bowling and was nearly a scratch golfer. No matter what our match was in golf, and we had many all over the US, he always seemed to win.

Of course, the smart play was to have him on my team, then I always seemed to win.

Layno stayed at my house many times over the years. We always had a good time as we discussed life, poker strategies, our relationships with friends and family, and how things were going for us at that time.

I’ll miss my quick-witted, no-holds-barred, straight-up friend. To the legendary Layne Flack: rest in peace.
