World Poker Tour Moves All Televised Final Tables To Las Vegas In Season XVII

Season XVII of the World Poker Tour is going to look like no season ever before it. As part of the WPT’s partnership with Esports Arena Las Vegas at Luxor Casino & Hotel, all televised final tables are moving to the original home of the World Poker Tour.

According to WPT CEO Adam Pliska and Director of Tour Management Angelica Hael, the number of final tables taking place at Esports Arena Las Vegas is nine: eight Main Tour events, plus the season-ending Tournament of Champions.

These events were not formally confirmed by the WPT at Saturday’s media summit at Luxor. All properties who are in line to have their final tables hosted at Esports Arena Las Vegas are pending state and Nevada Gaming License approval.

After final tables are reached, tournaments will be placed on a hiatus between the end of play at the host property and the final table in Las Vegas. The estimate is three to six weeks between play. Per the WPT, the goal is to have spans of final tables play out consecutively over a single week.

“It’s no secret that the home of global poker is here in Las Vegas,” said Hael. “In many respects, it makes perfect sense to move WPT final tables of televised events to be here. The move aims not to just take WPT to new heights, but to also elevate the game of poker as a whole. It is going to be a location where we can celebrate and honor our industry-leading events and also elevate the experience of our champions.”

New home for the WPT

Esports Arena Las Vegas is the modern hub for gaming, and now poker, on the Las Vegas strip. WPT’s parent company, Ourgame, owns multiple eSports arenas across the globe and opened Esports Arena Las Vegas in March 2018. Luxor is also an MGM Resorts property. MGM and the WPT are partners dating back to Season I.

Spectators are treated to a premier viewing experience for poker upon entering Esports Arena Las Vegas. The stage is a size that rivals Broadway with the production to match. 50-foot tall LED screens with the WPT logo stands behind the table with cyan lights scattered across the stage.

Players enter the arena through the ‘Hype Tunnel.’ A hallway striped with fluorescent lighting that conjures images of Blade Runner 2049.

The over $20 million investment to build Esports Arena Las Vegas reflects in the live action should do the same in the television episodes for Season XVII.

Pliska reflected this sentiment.

“The amazing blessing of this is it not only guarantees you’ll see this show for [up to] 15 more years, it looks better,” Plisak said. “There’s no question, it’s a sport. We’ve said it’s a sport and now we have the venue for it.”

Hael alluded comparing Esports Arena Las Vegas potentially being the iconic location for poker in a similar way to what Madison Square Garden is for basketball.

Break equals exposure

A goal of the World Poker Tour with their new playground is to boost the presence of their final tablists. During the break between tournament play at the host property and the final table, the projection is to give all six players a profile usually reserved for just the champion of the event.

“We are dedicated to promoting players going into this event because we know that their story needs to be told,” WPT Marketing Manager Donnie Peters said.

Season-long storylines for the major events are condensed into just a few weeks of poker. The Player of the Year race switches in a span of days instead of a yearlong grind to the finish line.

Revamped schedule for Season XVII

“Our entire schedule has changed,” WPT Executive Tour Director Matt Savage said. “Because of this change, we’ve had to rearrange our entire schedule. Not only is it going to be a big change for the poker players, it’s going to be a change for us.”

All WPT Main Tour events in Season XVII that are going to be televised, are on hold to start until at least the end of the year.

The Borgata Poker Open in Atlantic City, NJ has long been a televised event on the WPT every September. The event is a candidate to be live streamed in Season XVII. This year’s Borgata Poker Open runs from September 16-21.

Season XVII opens at the Gardens Casino in Hawaiian Gardens, CA in with the $5,000 buy-in WPT Gardens Poker Festival. The event runs July 21-26. The casino first hosted the WPT in 2017 when the WPT500 Los Angeles tournament played.

WPT Choctaw returns August 3-7 in Durant, OK. The Season XVI edition was the first North American stop of the campaign and drew 924 entrants.

The Bicycle Hotel and Casino is not a Main Tour stop for the 2018 portion of the schedule. Legends of Poker is, for now, WPT500 Los Angeles with a $1 million guarantee starting August 18 and concluding on August 27.

Other familiar tour stops back on the schedule for 2018 are WPT Maryland (September 21-25), WPT bestbet Bounty Scramble (October 19-23), and the WPT Five Diamond World Poker Classic (December 10-15).

Your Guide To Watching Live Coverage Of The 2018 World Series of Poker

Poker Central began its live streaming partnership with the World Series of Poker last year. Through its paid streaming service, PokerGO, Poker Central aimed to elevate the live streams to broadcast quality.

Many complained about the smaller streaming schedule on PokerGO compared to the free live streaming service provided by WSOP.com in years past. The biggest uproar last year came when there wasn’t a live stream for Event #9: $10,000 Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better Championship. The final table included Daniel Negreanu, Mike Matusow, John Monnette, and eventual winner Abe Mosseri and players wanted to watch.

Overall, it was the lack of flexibility to follow the stories that left players and fans wanting the old streaming product back.

Poker Central expands its live streaming content schedule

The good news is, it appears Poker Central listened when creating its plan for 2018.

“We’re eager to continue our live coverage of the WSOP on PokerGO for the second year running,” said Poker Central VP of Content Sam Simmons. “Our expanded coverage schedule including a wide array of poker variants will give our viewers even more opportunities to follow all the action of the world’s most prestigious tournament series.”

The WSOP live streaming schedule includes 16 final table broadcasts, a variety of game types, and will offer two days of coverage for the Big One for One Drop.

Plus, Poker Central and ESPN will once again offer complete coverage of the Main Event from start to finish.

Executive Director of the WSOP Ty Stewart said, “We’re looking forward to having Poker Central and ESPN tag team coverage for the WSOP again this year. Fans can expect stellar storylines and wall-to-wall coverage throughout the event and during the ‘Big One for One Drop.’”

Paddy Power Betfair and FanDuel Betting Big On Sports Betting

The fantasy sports company, FanDuel is expanding its reach into the U.S. sports betting market. Paddy Power Betfair, the European gaming company, struck a deal to buy a controlling stake in the DFS company.

The Supreme Court‘s decision last week opened the door for legal single-game sports betting in the U.S. On the heels of that the decision, the two companies announced they were merging. It is obvious they are preparing to capitalize on the infancy sports betting market from the onset.

“Fanduel and Betfair … are prepared to lead the charge into the US sports betting market,” Fanduel CEO Matt King said in a statement.

The Paddy Power Betfair and FanDuel merger

The merger is limited to PaddyPower’s U.S. operations, which reported $141 million in revenue last year. FanDuel made $124 million. Both were unprofitable and are banking that sports betting will change that.

FanDuel has 7 million registered users accounting for 40 percent of the fantasy-sports activity in the U.S.

Once the deal is approved, Paddy Power Betfair will own 61 percent of the newly combined business. It will also be the operational decision maker.

After three years, Paddy Power Betfair has the option to acquire 80 percent of the company. In five years, it has the opportunity to purchase the remaining 20 percent of the company outright.

FanDuel currently has $76 million in existing debt. As part of the agreement, Betfair US will contribute $150 million in cash to pay down the debt and contribute its existing U.S. assets.

Both companies expect to finalize the deal in Q3.

Why FanDuel and not Draft Kings?

There was a question from the conference call announcing the merger as to why Paddy Power Betfair chose FanDuel.

“I’m just wondering why it is FanDuel that you have chosen to buy, rather than a business that looks more successful in DraftKings — or at least bigger.”

Peter Jackson, CEO of Paddy Power Betfair alluded that the sale is more than buying a customer base. The company is looking to build a business that brings the successes of their European operation to the U.S:

“We think we’ve got a very good cultural fit with the business. If you go far enough back, Nigel — who actually founded FanDuel — was one of the early people who worked at Betfair. So if you go back far enough, we’re all related.”

FanDuel’s player database and Paddy Power Betfair’s investment will not only position FanDuel in the sports betting market, but it will also help to grow its DFS product.

It’s unknown what sports betting with FanDuel will look like. In an email to users, King wrote:

“We’re currently working on a sports betting product which we expect to be available by the 2018 NFL season. We can’t wait for you to see what we have in store!”

The merger will give FanDuel much-needed capital and the expertise to catch up to DraftKings, which until now was leading the charge.

Looking ahead to the legalized sports market

“We are excited to add FanDuel to the Group’s portfolio of leading sports brands,” Jackson said. “This combination creates the industry’s largest online business in the US, with a large sports-focused customer base and an extensive nationwide footprint.”

The estimates for the potential size of the legal sports betting market in the U.S. are all over the place. Some have come in as high as $13 billion.

GamblingCompliance, an independent gaming intelligence company believes five states will legalize sports betting in 2018. It estimates sports betting revenue of $1 billion this year. In five years, the estimate falls between $2 billion and $6 billion per year.

States that are on track to implement sports betting this year are:

Being first to market as states put sports betting regulations in play will be crucial. With the assets, capital and knowledge of Paddy Power Betfair behind them, FanDuel will be ready to take advantage and secure more than its fair share.

Pennsylvania’s Darren Elias Nabs Record-Setting Fourth WPT Title

Greater Philadelphia’s Darren Elias managed to make World Poker Tour history this week.

Elias became the first player to capture four WPT titles after winning the Season XVI WPT Bobby Baldwin Classic for $387,580 at the Aria Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada on Wednesday. The three WPT titles he previously won are:

  • 2017 Fallsview Poker Classic
  • 2014 WPT Caribbean (St. Maarten)
  • 2014 Borgata Poker Open

Prior to this week, Elias was one of five players with three WPT titles. The other triple threats are:

  • Anthony Zinno
  • Carlos Mortensen
  • Chino Rheem
  • Gus Hansen

The new WPT Bobby Baldwin Classic

The $10,000 buy-in WPT Bobby Baldwin Classic is a new event on the tour’s schedule. It drew 162 entries, creating a $1,555,200 prize pool that paid the top 21 finishers.

The final table of six was livestreamed online by poker content subscription service PokerGO, which has a studio at Aria. Elias entered a stacked final six with a massive chip lead he never relinquished.

Two-time WPT champion’s Jonathan Little ($74,520) and Sam Panzica ($97,795) were the first to fall. They were soon followed by 2016 WPT L.A Poker Classic Champion Dietrich Fast, who finished fourth for $130,895.

2015 World Series of Poker Main Event Champion Joe McKeehen had a chance to win the Hublot WPT Season XVI Player of the Year award by taking down the tournament. The WPT POY prize package includes a Hublot Big Bang Unico World Poker Tour Limited Edition watch and complimentary accommodations for all Season XVII WPT Main Tour events.

However, that package and POY honors will go to double WPT Season XVI title winner Art Papazyan after Philadelphia’s McKeehen finished third for $178,610.

Elias endured through a 103-hand heads-up match with tough Taiwanese pro Kitty Kuo to capture the title and vault his career tournament earnings up to $6,024,703.

Kuo was looking to become just the second female player to win an open WPT event. However, despite doubling up three times and nearly evening up the stacks, she was never able to wrestle the chip lead from Elias’ hands. Kuo had to settle for $248,380 in second-place money.

Four-time WPT champ Darren Elias

Elias, who was born in Boston, Massachusetts but spent most of his formative years in Erie, Pennsylvania. He now lives in Cherry Hill, New Jersey in the Greater Philadelphia Area.

In addition to more than $6 million in live tournament earnings, Elias has reportedly won more than $3.8 million playing online poker.

Elias told WPT staff his success on the tour can be attributed to his success against US players:

“It was cool to do something no one has ever done. I think I do well against the American pros and American recreational players who play in these more so than the European players. These WPTs are mostly in America with mostly American players, so I think that’s a lot of the reason for my success.”

Next up for the WPT is the season-ending WPT Tournament of Champions. It kicked off at Aria Thursday, drawing a field of 80 current and former WPT champions. Of course, the field includes the now four-time WPT champion Elias. His WPT Bobby Baldwin Classic haul included a $15,000 seat.
