Market Monitor: France Q1 2018

 

In Q1 2018, online poker in France grew for the fourth consecutive quarter, up 8.3% year-over-year and representing the highest quarter in five years.

The migration of players from cash games over to tournaments continued in Q1. In fact, it was a particularly pronounced swing, with tournaments now accounting for 65% of poker revenue, up from 62% in Q4 2017. Cash game revenue dipped 2% year-over-year reversing a recent trend of slight growth; tournaments continued to enjoy their upswing with the biggest quarter of growth in three years, up almost 15%.

Caesars And Others Dropping Employee Marijuana Testing

At the realization that marijuana testing could thin out the casino hiring pool in Las Vegas, some businesses are removing marijuana from the list of drug tests for potential employees.

Caesars Entertainment dropped marijuana drug testing. A Caesars spokesperson told KTNV that they would drug test employees only if there was a reason to believe they used drugs. Comparatively, MGM Resorts still tests for marijuana as part of its hiring process.

The Associated Press found that the casino will only test for marijuana among employees who are working in transportation in Las Vegas.

James Reidy, a New Hampshire employment lawyer, told AP that employers increasingly have to think about whether the jobs they are hiring for require the test.

“Employers are saying, ‘We have a thin labor pool,” Reidy said to the Las Vegas Sun. “‘So are we going to test and exclude a whole group of people? Or can we assume some risks, as long as they’re not impaired at work?’”

Public pot acceptability up

Because many companies remain concerned about their public image and acceptability around marijuana and its testing, Reidy said this could be the “new don’t ask, don’t tell.”

Even so, the public perception of marijuana is changing as it becomes legalized. A Gallup poll found that 64 percent of Americans support legalizing pot, the highest percentage in a half-century.

Thoran Towler, CEO of the Nevada Association of Employers, said that recreational marijuana dispensaries are now as common, or at least similar looking, to Apple stores. Recreational use is legal in Nevada, but that is not even the primary concern of employers.

Towler said that executives from his 400-member group still wonder where they can find employees. He posits that roughly one of every 10 members have stopped testing for marijuana because there seems to be no other option.

“They say, ‘I have to get people on the casino floor or make the beds, and I can’t worry about what they’re doing in their spare time,’” Towler said.

Marijuana use wide among employees

More and more, employers try to expand their hiring pool because of the record number of job openings. Across the country, in places like New Hampshire, Michigan, and California, employers realize that marijuana testing limits options.

Colorado continues to allow businesses to fire employees who test positive; Maine barred companies from firing or blocking potential hires from marijuana use outside of work.

The Employers Council in Denver found that 10 percent of employers dropped marijuana screening in 2016.

This practice, over 30 years old now, may have become outdated as marijuana becomes legalized and widely acceptable.

AP reported that Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island employers have lost lawsuits for taking back offers or firing workers who tested positive for cannabis; the courts only this year changed their stance to favor employees.

The Society for Human Resource Management found that 57 percent of companies conduct drug tests. However, that does not indicate if marijuana is included in that testing.

Another potential influence: low unemployment rates among those who have not graduated high school (5.5%). More businesses are hiring people without high school diplomas.

As expected, Americans bet big on the 144th running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs Racetrack in Louisville, Kentucky this past weekend.

In fact, according to a Churchill Downs press release, wagering from all sources was the highest ever recorded on both the actual Kentucky Derby race and the entire Kentucky Derby Day program.

Justify was the horse that came in two-and-a-half lengths ahead of the field in a rain-soaked 144th Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve. Despite the rain, 157,813 people attended the event live at Churchill Downs Racetrack on Saturday, May 5. It marked the eighth-largest crowd in track history.

$225.7 million wagered

However, it was the money wagered on the event that provided record-breaking figures. According to Churchill Downs, wagering from all sources on the entire Kentucky Derby Day program totaled a whopping $225.7 million. This marked an eight-percent increase over 2017 totals when the previous record of $209.2 million was set.

Additionally, the race itself saw an outstanding $149.9 million wagered from all sources. This marked a further eight-percent increase over 2017 when the previous record of $139.2 million was set.

Churchill Downs CEO Bill Carstanjen said once they add it all up, he expects to see the company’s earnings from the race to grow by as much as $13 million this year:

“We are deeply grateful to all of the fans of the Kentucky Derby around the world who once again made this an amazing and memorable experience.”

$39.2 million bet online

Big bucks were also bet on the historic horse race online this year.

TwinSpires is the online and mobile betting platform that acts as the official betting partner of the Kentucky Derby and the Breeders’ Cup World Championships. It recorded $39.2 million in handle on the Kentucky Derby Day program. That was an increase of 15 percent over 2017.

Additionally, TwinSpires’ handle on the race alone reached $24.6 million. That represents an 18 percent increase over 2017’s Kentucky Derby online betting numbers.

That much money wagered was bound to create some big winners and one such story has emerged from as far away as Austin, Texas.

Texas woman earns $1.2 million on Kentucky Derby Pick 5

According to ABC News, an Austin woman, who asked not to be identified, won $1.2 million on Derby Day. In fact, she did so betting just $18 on a series of Kentucky Derby day races.

The woman made a Pick 5 wager at the Retama Park racetrack in Salem, Texas, Saturday. She picked the winner in all five races to earn the massive win.

A Retama Park spokesperson said the woman had Justify to win. Plus, she managed to pick the winners of all four races at Churchill Downs leading up to the Kentucky Derby.

It marked the first million-dollar Pick 5 winner at Retama Park.

Justify is owned by:

    • Jack Wolf and partners’ Starlight Racing

The horse earned $1,432,000 for the win. An amount only slightly more than what the Pick 5 winner collected.
