Global Poker likes to reward players that consistently show up, play and do well. To make the Rattlesnake Open more attractive, it has added an additional $15,000 in value to players who place towards the top of the leaderboard when the series ends.

The best player of the tournament will follow in the footsteps of Nathan ‘Penta’ Blair from the Eagle Cup and Sandra ‘MommyGingery’ Lefler from the Grizzly Games. These leaderboard champions claimed flights, accommodations and an entry into their choice of tournaments for their leaderboard wins.

Blair played the WSOP Circuit Event in Cherokee, North Carolina and placed 34th out of 957 players for $5,627. Lefler chose to play the Wynn Spring Classic in Las Vegas, Nevada and placed 47th out of 984 players for $6,218.

Does PA Land-Based Gambling Have Anywhere Else To Expand?

Are Pennsylvania casino operators finally willing to admit the casino market in the Northeast has become saturated?

The fact none of them bid in the latest mini-casino license action held by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board this week suggest they may be.

It appears now only five of the 10 mini-casino licenses available will be snatched up by existing operators. Could it be that the industry has finally taken a good look in the mirror and realized building more casinos only serves to splinter existing gambling revenues rather than increase them?

The local casino industry in PA remains successful for now, having just posted over $300 million in monthly revenue for the first time ever in March. However, one look around at the huge number of new casinos suddenly popping up across the Northeast and it’s easy to see market saturation is either here now, or right around the corner.

New NY  casinos miss projections

Neighboring New York approved the opening of four new commercial casinos over the past 16 months. First, in December 2016, Tioga Downs racino in Nichols, NY was converted into a full commercial casino. Operators projected $103 million in revenue in the first year. It ultimately fell close to $30 million short.

Rivers Casino & Resort in Schenectady, NY and del Lago Resort and Casino in Tyre, NY both opened in February 2017. Rivers was projected to pull in $222 million in revenue during its inaugural year, but missed by some $80 million. Del Lago figured on hitting $263 million in year one but ended up $100 million short of projections.

Both casinos have since asked the state for help in turning things around. However, the state seems unwilling. It certainly can’t stop the construction of even more casinos in other states across the Northeast, or help to create the new gamblers needed to fill them. Perhaps lawmakers have deemed the situation hopeless.

The $1.2 billion Resorts World Catskills also opened in Monticello, NY in March. Tourist season in the area has yet to start. Plus, it’s really too early to tell, but all signs indicate revenues will be on pace with Rivers and Del Lago. This despite projections they would be significantly bigger.

More new casinos across the Northeast

There’s another two renovated and re-branded gambling operations set to open in Atlantic City, New Jersey this summer too. That’s Revel turned Ocean Resort Casino and Trump Taj Mahal turned Hard Rock Atlantic City. Plus, the entire Northeast gambling establishment will soon be joined by the billion-dollar MGM Springfield. It is set to launch in Massachusetts in September.

Add it up and clearly, if the market isn’t saturated yet, it will be by the time those facilities all open.

Back in PA, there will be at least five new mini-casinos open before long. Maybe even a sixth, as the gaming board is considering holding at least one more licensing auction. Plus, construction of a new sports-arena area casino in Philadelphia is underway and expected to be done by 2020.

The PA casino industry showed signs it understands it might run out of gamblers before these new facilities are built. But it may just be too late. Casino construction continues the rest of the Northeast casino industry still seems unwilling to admit it.

NY Online Poker’s New Life Could Be Tied To Sports Betting

When Assemblyman Clyde Vanel arrived on the New York online poker scene earlier this month, he brought plenty of optimism with him. Now, fellow Assemblyman J. Gary Pretlow is trying to temper expectations.

However, even though Pretlow does not have the high hopes for online poker Vanel does, he did indicate in a recent interview with Online Poker Report that poker’s chances are not bad to pass in the Empire State this year.

Bill gaining co-sponsors, goal is 76

As Vanel mentioned, his online poker bill is quickly gaining co-sponsors.  The bill currently has 44 co-sponsors. Pretlow predicted the bill will get to 60. However, he also said 60 is not enough to give the bill a good shot.

“We will get to 60, but my goal is 76. At 76, that means there’s a majority of Democrats in favor,” Pretlow said.

Over the past year, Pretlow frequently lamented the stubbornness of his peers in the Assembly when it comes to online poker. In particular, he fears the Speaker Carl Heastie will never let online poker happen. Pretlow elaborated on why Heastie is such a roadblock:

“He’s not in favor of gambling,” Pretlow said. “It’s obvious there are a lot of people in the Assembly not in favor of gambling of any sort. I try to explain to them that this is an expansion of existing gambling, but it’s hard to do when minds are closed.”

Standalone bill not poker’s only chance at passing

Convincing fellow Assembly members is the clearest tact to getting regulated online poker. There is another way though.

Sports betting.

While online poker lacks support, sports betting has much more momentum. Moreover, with a potential decision in the Supreme Court sports betting case possibly just days away, time is of the essence for the state.

New York already has a sports betting measure in place. Voters approved a measure to allow wagering, but that measure lacks specifics, only stating that commercial casinos in the state can take wagers. A bill expanding sports betting to race tracks is needed. The state also needs to pass specific regulations regarding who oversees wagering, taxation plans, and other details.

Given how many neighboring states are also rushing to implement sports betting, time is of the essence in Albany.

Unfortunately, Pretlow sees pairing up the two as a last resort, not an obvious course of action.

“I don’t want to combine them, but if I have to then I will. The sports betting bill has a better chance to pass, and maybe it can carry online poker with it.”

While Pretlow may still sound skeptical, the energy and enthusiasm of Vanel, as well as the hopes of riding sports betting’s coattails into law have many New Yorkers holding out hope 2018 is the year.

In the meantime, New York residents should reach out to their local representatives and tell them they are ready to #PlayNY.

The Five Best Las Vegas Poker Tournaments Under $1,000 In 2018

Buy-ins of all shape and size dot Las Vegas, Nevada over the summer. Tournament costs add up in a hurry and players are on the lookout for where they can get the most bang for their buck. In the spirit of that mindset, below is a look at the best value tournament of at most a three-figure buy-in this summer.

1. $888 World Series of Poker Crazy Eights

Date: June 30-July 3

Only at the World Series of Poker is there an event with almost $1 million for first-place that plays eight-handed all the way to the finish line. “Crazy Eights” is a gimmick and lottery, but a profitable one.

The $888,888 guaranteed first place prize draws the thousands to the Rio right before the Main Event. Alexandru Papazian outlasted 8,120 runners in 2017. Payouts are available for all four starting flights, with two each day on June 30 and July 1.

The stacks of 8,000 to start might seem shallow but 60-minute levels on Days 2 and 3 open play up later. Crazy Eights beats out “The Colossus” for value due to the better playing environment (eight-handed tables) and comparable guaranteed money up top.

2. $600 MSPT Venetian DeepStack Championship Poker Series

Date: June 9-13

The $600 price point is one The Venetian pushes out across the full duration of its DeepStack Championship Poker Series. A $1 million guarantee is the cream of the $600 crop. The final table for the event is to be live streamed through the Mid-States Poker Tour.

The event starts on June 9 and the final table takes place on June 13. Players have three starting flights to choose from with one each on June 9, 10, and 11. A generous structure of chips and time is in place with a 20,000 starting bank along with 40-minute levels for the full length of the tournament.

At least 2,000 entrants are expected to register and the winner is going to leave somewhere around $250,000 for their three days of play.

3. $600 Phamous Poker Series Goliath Milly

Date: June 6-9

On the judgment of venue alone, The Venetian $600 $1 million guaranteed event goes ahead of the Planet Hollywood version. The only change in structure is the blind level escalation. Levels are 30 minutes on Day 1, 40 minutes on Day 2, and 60 on Day 3. Players have time on their side when they need it the most.

WSOP bracelet winner Michael Wang defeated 2,721 entrants in 2017 to win this exact event. Wang collected $205,165 from the prize pool that went to $1.42 million.

The Venetian enjoys a full expo this summer and players can expect there to be a little to no alternate lists compared to the smaller space utilized by Planet Hollywood.

4. $365 World Series of Poker Online Bracelet Event

Date: June 3

Win a bracelet from the couch for under $400? Who doesn’t want a piece of that action? The World Series of Poker hopes that players inside the New Jersey and Nevada borders sign up in droves for one of the four online events this summer.

WSOP.com is the host for the event with a quality structure in place. All levels are 15 minutes, an eternity for online. Entrants open with starting stacks of 15,000 with antes not kicking in until a few hours after play starts.

There is no guarantee on the event but expect to see close to 1,000 runners by the time the four-hour registration period closes.

5. $565 ARIA WPT 500

Date: June 25-July 3

The WPT 500 is one of the five must-play events of the summer and a serious value. For $565, players get a $1 million guarantee, World Poker Tour glory, and a prime location in the ARIA.

The nine starting flights offer any and all chances to get in the WPT action. The 2015 edition of the tournament brought in 5,113 entries to create a first-place prize of $330,000.

A Day 1 structure of 30 and 40-minute levels and 15,000 chips create a fast but fair environment. More than the Colossus or Giant, the WPT 500 is non-super short stacked for the entire event nor a turbo. It falls into a great sweet spot.
