Habits You Must Develop To Become A Better Online Gambler In New Jersey
Online gambling is always tons of fun, but for obvious reasons, it’s even more of a good time when you’re winning.
At first glance, it appears like winning is a random occurrence when playing online casino games.
It’s true that most online casino games are more about luck than skill. However, gamblers that win consistently are the ones following solid fundamental strategies, practicing good bankroll management skills and taking advantage of every edge offered to them.
Over the long haul, the house edge on casino games looks unbeatable. Statistically, it is. However, players that employ good gambling principles often find a way to get lucky and squeeze out some profit.
Winners don’t just do these kinds of things sometimes; they make a real habit of it. Here’s a list of four new betting habits you can adopt to be a better online gambler and find a way to win consistently.
Betting with the bonus
New Jersey online casino sites are giving away free bonus cash to new players just for signing up for an account. Taking advantage of these NJ online casino bonuses will immediately make you a better online gambler. Bonus hunting is a great way to play with the house’s money and gamble bonus. You may not win, but you’re guaranteed not to lose.
For the most part, you can use these bonuses to play the same games you would otherwise. Plus, you’ll have the same chance to win big while avoiding all risk.
Betfair offers new sign-ups who use the online promo code PLAY30 a pair of the largest bonuses in the market.
First, you get a $30 registration bonus with just a one-time wagering requirement. Then, Betfair offers a huge 100 percent first deposit match bonus up to $2,500.
This one comes with a 20 times wagering requirement on slots, but players do have 90 days to meet it.
The best way to take advantage of these sign-up bonuses is to take advantage of them all. Playing with the house’s money makes you a better online gambler, and there’s no reason why you shouldn’t play with as much of it as possible.
Golden Nugget also offers a pair of new player bonuses that can help you do that.
Sign up for a new account on the site using the online promo code PLAY20 and you’ll get a $20 no deposit bonus. Plus, you’ll be eligible to receive 100 percent deposit bonus of up to $1,000 on your first deposit.
There’s also a 20 times wager requirement on slots here, but its 100 times for all other games.
Taking advantage of this offer and all the other ones available in the New Jersey online casino market will make you a better online gambler right out of the gate. But that’s not the only way to become a better online gambler.

Betting with a system
There are no guarantees in gambling. However, by employing proven betting strategies, players can reduce the house edge a little and improve their chances of winning.
Like we said there are no guarantees, but following a tried and true betting methodology should increase your chances.
The Martingale System is a negative progression system that involves increasing bets with every loss in an effort to consistently win your original bet.
It’s most often used playing blackjack. If you bet $5 on a single hand of blackjack and lose, you immediately bet $10 on the next hand. Lose again and you bet $20. Keep doubling the bet until you win and you’ll find yourself ahead of the size of the original $5 bet. Profits are found by repeating the system.
It looks like a can’t-miss strategy, but it can require deep pockets. Doubling a bet can make it a big one pretty fast. Plus, players need to pay strict attention to table limits to make sure they can get a win in before they hit it.
It’s a risky strategy, but there’s no reason it can’t be employed successfully online and help make you a better online gambler. That is, as long as you’ve got the bankroll to handle the ups and downs.
It might be worth trying the Parlay System as well. It’s a positive progression system that involves increasing your bet every time you win. This system is about using the house’s money to capitalize on the positive momentum.
Betting within your means
Those who show consistent success while gambling often set strict win and loss limits and stick to them.
Limits make you a better online gambler. Not setting a win limit increases the likelihood players will keep betting profits until they’re gone.
Leaving the table when you’ve hit your win limit ensures you’ll make a profit. It’s not the maximum profit, but it is a profit. In the meantime, setting a loss limit allows players to limit losses and avoid extended losing streaks.
It’s simply good bankroll management to play within your means. Lose only what you can afford to and quit while your ahead. It’ll make you a better online gambler.

Betting on the right games
Game selection is another key to being a better online gambler. Choosing games with a lower house edge will increase your chances of winning more consistently and put you on a path to profitability.
Take roulette for example. There are all kinds of roulette games online in New Jersey. However, most are either a version of American Roulette with a zero and a double zero, or European Roulette, with just a zero.
The house edge on European Roulette, without the double zero, is significantly lower. Just that one number makes a big difference. You’ll want to stick with European Roulette if you’re focused on choosing games with a lower house edge and becoming a better online gambler.
You’ll also want to educate yourself as to which games offer the lowest house edge on the market. The opposite of house edge is a game’s return to player rate (RTP). This tells you how much of each dollar a game takes that it will pay back out to players.
Looking for games with the higher return to player rates is the same thing as hunting down those with a lower house edge.
In the NJ online gambling industry, no game has a higher return to player rate than Single-Deck Blackjack on Tropicana and Virgin. In fact, the return to player rate is 99.87 percent.
Single-Deck Blackjack is a classic blackjack game available online at a number of regulated New Jersey online casinos, including Virgin and Tropicana.
As the name implies, Single-Deck Blackjack is played with only one deck of cards that is shuffled after each hand, rather than a traditional eight-deck shoe or otherwise.
The rules are as follows:
- Blackjack pays 3:2
- Insurance pays 2:1
- Dealer stands on soft 17
- Only double down on 9, 10, 11
- Split only on matching pairs
- Split only once
- No double down on splits
- Hit available on split Aces
- No surrender
As you can see, the rules include some relatively tight restrictions on splitting and doubling down. However, the lack of a multi-deck shoe more than makes up for it.
Single-Deck Blackjack offers the best RTP rate in the business. Those who play it in an effort to make better game selection decisions are certainly employing the practices of a better online gambler.

GAN Making Gains Thanks To Growing Presence In US Markets
Online casino software provider GAN plans to take its 2017 growth in the U.S. and use that for emerging U.S. online gaming markets in 2018.
With a revenue of £9.1 million in 2017 and a total gross income reported of £41.1 million, the company announced its 2017 annual results. To date, this is the company’s cleanest financials, showing profits for the first time since 2013.
Key to iGaming, GAN takes:
- about 15-30 percent increase in income and revenue,
- EBITDA profit of $500,000 (from a loss in 2016), and
- £2 million in raised funds to invest in the U.S.
US Simulated Gaming poised for growth
Dermon Smurfit, CEO of GAN, commented predominantly about the U.S. market the call. The growth of Simulated Gaming and internet profits in New Jersey inspire confidence for Pennsylvania, Michigan, and New York:
“We believe our Company has developed considerable momentum in the US market and that the Company is well-positioned to secure additional profitable opportunities from incremental US States which regulate real money Internet gaming over time.”
The company introduced Simulated Gaming, a social gambling system, to five new U.S. clients in 2017. Comparatively, 2016 brought three clients.
Even so, Smurfit said the U.S. legislation allowing some 12.8 million Pennsylvania residents to play online casino games in 2018 is a big win for the company.
GAN already has Simulated Gaming at Parx Casino, the largest casino in the state. Additionally, Smurfit said the casino approached GAN to bring real-money gaming from GAN’s GameSTACK system.
“GAN is positioned for substantial growth in regulated real-money Internet gaming in the US following the commencement of Pennsylvania’s Internet gaming market,” he said.
2017 speaks for itself
Smurfit attributes a lot of the 2017 success to on-property gaming for clients via Simulated Gaming. Along with GAN’s U.S. patented rewards points integration system, Smurfit said that this cost-effective marketing tool has multiple benefits.
- Increases on-property gaming by existing patrons
- Reactivates long-term lapsed patrons on-property
- Generates incremental income online for GAN, casino
Already, Simulated Gaming revenues come from the casino clients’ existing patrons and marketing services where professional service fees can increase. GAN is intent on delivering patron marketing via casino client support and thus scaling Simulated Gaming revenue.
The company also said its patent protections have resulted in commercial licensing discussions. GAN licensed its patent three times for real-money internet gaming in Pennsylvania and New Jersey and 13 times for Simulated Gaming nationwide.
US prospects pulling their weight
According to company reports, gross revenues in New Jersey were up 30 percent to $246 million. GAN now has two clients in the area, with one set to launch real-money internet gaming in 2018.
Now that the way may open for intra-state gaming, Smurfit said that Pennsylvania could be the catalyst for internet gaming regulation if the federal ban is lifted.
Goods news comes from New York and Michigan for GAN with Simulated Gaming. It maintains its position as the exclusive platform for three client properties in those areas. Should gaming legislation come with the bills in New York and Michigan, GAN sees itself as positioned to capitalize on those opportunities.

NY Casinos Ask For Bailout, But Cuomo Says No Way
Upstate New York’s four new commercial casinos aren’t making as much money as they thought they would. Now, two of the four are reportedly asking state lawmakers for a bailout.
In fact, two Upstate New York newspapers claim Rivers Casino & Resort in Schenectady, NY and Del Lago Resort and Casino in Tyre, NY have both asked state lawmakers for some type of financial assistance. The hope was to
The Tioga Downs Racino in Nichols, NY converted into a full commercial casino in December 2016, adding table games and slots. Operators expected to pull in $103 million in revenue in the first year but fell $30 million short.
Rivers and Del Lago both opened in February 2017. Rivers operators projected the casino would generate $222 million in revenue during its inaugural year. It missed by close to $80 million. Revenue was projected to reach $263 million in year one at Del Lago. It ended up $100 million short.
Finally, the $1.2 billion Resorts World Catskills opened in Monticello, NY last month. Bigger in every way, revenue at Resorts World Catskills is expected to far outpace Rivers and Del Lago. However, in its first five weeks, the casino has been on the same pace as the two smaller facilities.
Tax revenue below projections
According to the The Daily Gazette newspaper in Schenectady, Rivers projected it would pay between $69 million and $86 million in taxes during its first year of operation. It actually paid just $45.45 million. Del Lago projected it would pay between $59 million and $76 million in taxes. It paid just $42.92 million.
The Rochester Democrat & Chronicle reported a Del Lago official was in the state capital asking state lawmakers for some kind of tax relief. No specific request was outlined. However, a Del Lago spokesperson said the casino is having a difficult time competing with nearby Tribal casinos.

Rivers bailout details
Assemblyman Phil Steck, whose district includes Rivers, said Rivers is asking to:
- Take 10 percent of the money it pays in state taxes and funnel it into marketing efforts.
- End the requirement to pay the state to run security checks on its prospective employees.
- End payments it is required to make to Saratoga Casino Hotel (or it’s horsemen’s association).
- Apparently, there would be no reduction in host-community payments to the city, county, city school district or surrounding counties.
Steck says he’s in favor of the plan. However, Gov. Andrew Cuomo told a USA Today reporter the casinos are private businesses and he has no intention of bailing them out:
“The upstate gaming casinos are private concerns. They bid, they made an investment and some of them will say they’re not doing as well as they hoped or would have expected, but they’re private concerns, and I don’t want to get into the business of bailing out private concerns.”
Cuomo went on to say he’s not sympathetic to the casinos’ plight:
“We did casino gaming to create facilities, generate economic development to create jobs and it has done that. These facilities have done billions of dollars of construction and they employ thousands of people. So to the extent you have a casino saying ‘You know what? I’m not meeting my expectations. I should get help from the state,’ I’m not sympathetic to that.”
After Cuomo’s comments it is not surprising that any sort of bailout did not make it into the budget.
In the meantime, the general managers at River and Del Lago are both leaving. Rivers’ original general manager left the casino in November. Del Lago’s general manager announced this week would be his last.

The Fantastic Mr. Foxen
Alex Foxen is crushing 2018 on a global scale. The 27-year-old owns High Roller wins from the L.A. Poker Classic and Asia Pacific Poker Tour stop in Macau. The ambitious streak within Foxen led him to rise in the poker ranks to fifth in the current Global Poker Index standings. Foxen’s game grows every time he plays and he is far from satisfied with his current status in the game.
Not here by accident
The work ethic administered by Foxen to move from playing three digit buy-in events just a few years ago to beating the best in the world on a consistent basis is a series of small additions made to his game over time.
Foxen enrolled in the Chip Leader Coaching program in the fall of 2016 and noticed ways he could make himself better. Those changes grew in Foxen’s game with every tournament entered. There was no “lightbulb” moment for Foxen, who is pleased with the long-term changes he made between then and now.
“I think that everything in poker is progression and you need to improve small things,” Foxen told USPoker. “Over that period of time, it’s been a steady progression making minor changes in small spots and it makes a significant change as a whole.”
Facing off against the best in the world on a regular basis, Foxen is devoting his non-playing time to study in order to stay ahead of top-notch pros. At the Macau final table, Foxen defeated Rainer Kempe, Patrik Antonius, and Brian Rast to claim the $963,880 first-place prize.
“I hate to lose,” Foxen stated. “When everyone in poker is trying to get better. You need to try and stay ahead of the curve. The constant focus is on trying to improve and looking at things I might have done wrong. When you have success, it’s easy to think you have the game figured out. You play a session of online or a tournament and [other players] think about what they did well and I think about what I didn’t do optimally.”
Inexperience has its advantages
The first $25,000 High Roller event played by Foxen was over a year ago. Foxen’s volume increases with every quarter and his game is still fresh relative to the players who have battled in the same streets for the better part of the decade.
Foxen studies the game using solvers and charts but finds the simple act of peer-to-peer discussion to be the best remedy for success.
“I think the number one thing to do is to talk to other players,” Foxen iterated. “Solvers have a lot of value in that you can understand what the best option is to take in certain situations that are understanding assumptions that are rarely true. Solvers are done under an assumption. Even the best players aren’t going to respond the way the solver thinks. Players understand the way people think about the game.”
The two players Foxen credited for being his go-tos to talk strategy with are Chance Kornuth and Nick Petrangelo.
Foxen also noted that his Kristen Bicknell has been helpful in this process. The two players started dating earlier in 2018 and Foxen says that having someone to immediately go over with hands is beneficial. Bicknell herself is a two-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner and former SuperNova Elite on PokerStars.
When Foxen enters a high roller, there is a basic gameplan to his process but it morphs per his competition at the table. Foxen doesn’t fear any player, regardless of results, stating that a player’s results from a few years ago have no bearing on that tournament day.
“I think my start, in general, is go in with a baseline and adapt the players at the table. It’s all about being fluid and responding by deviating from your baseline going in,” Foxen told USPoker. “It’s important to realize how the game has evolved when someone might have had a few scores a few years ago. You understand that these people are playing at a high level and understanding where their head is at. You realize that it’s just another poker game and there’s nothing to be afraid of.”
Shooting for the stars
There is no limit to the buy-ins Foxen is willing to play. After he won the High Roller in Macau, Foxen jumped in the HKD$2.1 million ($268,000) Super High Roller Bowl China event. Registering for one high roller caused Foxen to miss another one.
Due to the time difference between Macau and the United States, Foxen mixed up the deadline to register for the Super High Roller Bowl lottery. A last-minute plea did not help his case and Foxen waits for next year.
However, the $1 million Big One For One Drop is fresh on Foxen’s mind. Foxen acquisition of a group of investors gives him no hesitation is registering for the event. The only hurdle for Foxen is the 11 percent rake of the event.
“The rake is pretty absurd right now. I get where they’re coming from. As someone who is selling to it, it’s hard to be profitable for investors. If they change the rake, I would definitely be in. You need confidence from other players to play those tournaments. It feels good to be able to play them.”
The big picture
Foxen’s current plan is to travel the world in search of more tournament glory and GPI points. Next up on his list is the partypoker Barcelona MILLIONS series which includes a €25,000, €50,000, and €100,000 event.
The first step after he lands in the United States for a period of time is to formally move to Las Vegas where he can play the ARIA High Rollers.
The former college football player is more concerned with the GPI crown than any immediate monetary gain. A fire burns within Foxen to be the best in this challenging game.
To become the best means to continue to learn and keep his sharp game refined. The work ethic required is already second-nature to Foxen who came up from $300 tournaments to $300,000 in the most demanding time in poker history.
“I’ve always loved competition and it’s something that has come naturally to me. You learn a lot of life lessons and I just really enjoy it. If I’m not competing, what’s the point?”
