CHIP CHATTER: Cheating Issues Emerge, Online Poker Explodes, Casinos Reopen, PSPC Canceled, and More

Live poker rooms may be closed at casinos around the world, but plenty of news poker remains. From a cheating scandal to casino re-openings to the cancellation of the PSPC, there is always news in the world of poker.

Here’s a look at some topics making headlines over the last few weeks.

Casinos reopening slowly with poker rooms lagging behind

As casinos begin opening, poker players are also returning slowly to live poker tables in a different environment. That hasn’t happened yet in Las Vegas or Atlantic City however.

According to the American Gaming Association, 321 casinos have now opened and 668 remain closed. Notably absent from the reopening lists are properties in Nevada, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

The state of Nevada was to begin allowing casinos to reopen on June 4 with some opening just past midnight. Many are opening for the first time in months with reduced staffing.

Properties in Delaware and Connecticut opened on June 1 with West Virginia properties opening June 5. Alabama and Rhode Island casinos will open the doors on June 8.

Some casinos in California have already returned to action with more planned in the next week. In Atlantic City, don’t expect any openings for at least a month. New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy has indicated reopening might not take place until the July 4 weekend.

In New York, only one casino has reopened so far. Despite all this news, poker remains an afterthought in many locations. The industry faces many challenges and major tournament series still may not return for months.

“First of all I know that poker will return someday to as it was before, only this time with a better understanding of hygiene, sanitation, and the newfound knowledge of how to cough and sneeze correctly with strong reminders from other players and employees if you forget,” WPT executive tour director Matt Savage told USPoker.

Online poker continues to explode around world

With no live poker, casino gambling, or sports to bet on, online poker has seen an energy not experienced since before Black Friday. Major operators like WSOP.com, PokerStars, partypoker, and 888poker have experienced record numbers in US markets.

Sweepstakes poker site Global Poker brought in 65,000 players for the recent Rattlesnake Open III. Sweeps Coin winnings in the series totaled 1.9 million.

On a global scale, GGPoker recently reported massive numbers for its WSOP Super Circuit Online Series. The festival is the first in which the WSOP has partnered to offer major series for an international market.

Originally with a $102 million guarantee, the 500-event series paid out almost $135 million. In the coming months, it will be interesting to see if this online poker boom continues.

May revenue numbers should be released in New Jersey and Pennsylvania soon. That should offer some insight after record-setting months in March and April.

Player cheating scandal revealed on Twitter

The Mike Postle cheating scandal made plenty of news in 2019 and is still playing out in court. Another cheating issue emerged last week when Bill Perkins alleged some well-known pros had been involved in cheating.

What is “ghosting” in poker?

Perkins charged that a few players had been involved in a private game via a poker app. He said well-known players were “ghosting” on a recreational player’s account. In essence, Perkins alleged those involved played as someone else.

For example, a loose-aggressive player might be playing on a known tight player’s account. It could be very profitable in the short term until other players adjust.

Dan “Jungleman” Cates was one of those involved. He admitted to playing hands on another player’s account against Perkins and Dan Bilzerian.

However, Cates noted that he understood the game “was rampant with professionals who were ghosting.”

“While I don’t think it’s fair that I’ve been singled out for something many were much more guilty of, I accept that as a role model for the poker community my punishment should be disproportionate compared to a normal player,” Cates said in a statement he released on the issue.

“I hold myself to a high standard of ethics and aspire to be devoid of inequity, but I still make mistakes and am sorry for my actions. I will do my best to behave better in the future.”

Cates confession draws criticism

Some players like Nick Schulman offered support. Others viewed the actions as a clear case of cheating. Shaun Deeb didn’t like the apology.

“Others doing it is no excuse for you also doing it,” Deeb noted on Twitter. “Clearly if you wanted to play the game, some of the recs were not being ghosted. You chose equity and hourly over morality and ethics. If the bar is others doing it, it’s a slippery slope of constant cheating.”

With online poker seeing big gains in the US, some players felt these types of incidents don’t help the industry as a whole.

“This is not an apology,” Grant Hinkle noted on Twitter. “Shady behavior by top players in the industry is not a good sign for poker long term.”

PokerStars postpones PSPC Barcelona

Those hoping to cash in a Platinum Pass will have to wait another year. PokerStars confirmed recently that the PSPC (PokerStars Players Championship) has been moved to 2021 because of the Coronavirus pandemic.

2020 Platinum Pass at Poker Stars

The event was to play out in August and becomes the latest major tournament event to be delayed or canceled. PokerStars also canceled upcoming Road to PSPC events in France, Spain, and the Philippines.

“We realize that this news will come as a disappointment to many, but we know you will understand and appreciate why this is necessary,” PokerStars noted in announcing the news. “Our priority is the safety and good health of all our players and staff, as well as the communities that host such large events.”

Despite the postponement, the site is adding even more promotional power. PokerStars will be awarding 80 more Platinum Passes, bringing the total to 400. A Platinum Pass includes a complete $30,000 travel package including the buy-in to the PSPC.

Wire Act appeal heard this month

While US online poker continues to boom, the Wire Act remains an obstacle to continued growth and expansion. Currently, online poker is legal in New Jersey, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. West Virginia and Michigan have also legalized poker with plans to go live in the next year.

However, the fate of the Wire Act limits the possibility of interstate compacts. The only current interstate compact features WSOP.com among New Jersey, Nevada, and with 888poker in Delaware.

The Obama-era Department of Justice argued that the act applied only to sports betting. The Trump DOJ reversed that opinion in 2018, arguing that it applies to other forms of iGaming.

Most in the gaming business argue that was not the act’s intention and the New Hampshire lottery sued. The lottery won the first round in court and the government appealed.

Arguments are now expected to be heard in federal appeals court on June 18. The case may ultimately wind up in front of the Supreme Court. A loss for the gaming industry could curtail interstate compacts and affect online poker, lotteries, and other interstate gaming options.

Here’s When Each Las Vegas Casinos Will Open Up On June 4

It’s time for Nevada casinos to open for business once again. On June 4, as early as 12:01 a.m., casinos throughout the Silver State will be ready to open their doors to customers for the first time in more than two months.

Phase 2 of the Nevada United: Roadmap to Recovery plan began on Friday, May 29. Casinos remained closed while businesses like bars, gyms, and spas were opening once again. Unlike the businesses that were allowed to reopen last week, casinos are massive buildings that offer many things to different people.

According to the most recent Nevada Gaming Abstract, gambling accounts for 35.7% of casino revenue for the largest properties in the state. In addition to gaming, the largest casinos in Nevada generate revenue from hotel rooms, restaurants, bars, spas, and more.

There are a lot more health and safety concerns inside of casinos beyond just keeping table games and machines clean. All of the businesses inside of the massive casinos had to learn the new best practices for keeping guests healthy and safe.

List of Las Vegas casino opening times

The vast majority of casinos in Las Vegas will reopen between 12:01 am and noon on June 4. Locals and downtown Las Vegas casinos will be opening early for residents that are looking to get out of the house and visit their casinos.

Not all casinos on the Vegas Strip will reopen right away. Many of these casinos depend on tourists to generate revenue. Some regional tourists will drive, but few will be flying to see the limited options at the casinos on the Vegas Strip.

The properties that reopen on the Vegas Strip will open after sunrise on June 4. Here’s a breakdown on when the casinos around Las Vegas will open:

What to expect when visiting Las Vegas casinos

Las Vegas casinos won’t be the same when they reopen. The experience will be different when visiting Las Vegas casinos on June 4.

Casinos closed to help slow the spread of coronavirus. Guests will have their temperatures read upon entering many casinos. Higher temperatures may lead to the discovery that a guest has COVID-19.

The casinos are recommending, but won’t require, guests to wear facial coverings when they reopen on Thursday, June 4. This is certainly a change, as masks and such haven’t been allowed inside of casinos before. Some casinos will even hand out face coverings to guests upon entry.

Once inside the casinos, expect to see a lot of casino employees cleaning everything that will potentially be touched by a guest. All gaming equipment, tables, and machines will be cleaned more than ever.

Some casinos will have plexiglass dividers to keep guests separated in addition to social distancing measurements. As previously detailed, table games will have fewer seats and some positions will be restricted at machine games.

There will be a lack of major attractions and amenities when casinos reopen. Shows will not reopen right away. While pools will open, day clubs and nightclubs will not open right away. Some casinos will keep some bars and restaurants closed as well.

The initial requirements for casinos to reopen may not last forever. It’s likely that future phases of Nevada reopening will allow casinos to have more people throughout the property. Additionally, there should be a time in the future where casinos can open showrooms for larger gatherings. The casino experience in a year will be very different than this week.

EVERYDAY GRINDERS: Catching Up with PokerStars ‘PennsylMania’ Champion

After winning Pennsylvania’s biggest online poker tournament ever, Dillon Longenbach had to tell someone special. He’d just played two days of poker and topped a field of 2,774 entries to win $69,670.

“My mother didn’t believe me and laughed when I told her I had won,” says the 26-year-old player from Ivyland, PA. “After winning I actually had to take a walk because of all the adrenaline pumping.

PennsylMania was a one-off PokerStars event and became the biggest in the state’s brief online poker history. The $200 buy-in tournament ran May 17-18 and boasted a huge $250,000 guarantee. The event crushed that however, attracting 1,760 entries, 1,014 re-entries, and a prize pool of $515,964.

Topping the PokerStars PennsylMania battle royale

Longenbach isn’t a poker pro and his Hendon Mob profile lists a grand total of $196 in live poker winnings. Instead, he’s representative of many US online poker players.

A regular guy who works in sales and as a warehouse manager, he just loves playing poker. His championship became not only the biggest online poker win in PA, but also the biggest of Longenbach’s career.

I have had a couple small online tournament wins and final tables, but never anything close to a win this size,” says Longenbach, who has been playing poker with friends for years. “The tournament was a grind that had a lot of ups and downs but had so many memorable moments that I will remember for the rest of my life.

“Honestly, it was a very surreal moment winning. I’ve always dreamed of final tabling a major event, so winning one was an added bonus. Even over a week later it still doesn’t feel real.”

Reality may not have set in, but the title came after plenty of effort. His hobby has now paid off in a big way after working on his game over the last few months.

“I enjoy the mental aspect of poker, and how much work really needs to go into poker to be a winning player,” Longenbach says. “I enjoy the fact that anyone can play the game and everyone has equal opportunity to be successful based on the amount of work they put in.”

A comeback and then turning it on for the title

Winning a major tournament always comes with some big moments and a bit of luck. For Longenbach, who plays under the screen name “D-Low1527,” several moments stand out.

Right before the end of Day 1, he was left with about 12 big blinds and was dealt pocket Kings. That helped him double up and then one hand later was dealt Ace-King.

He called an all-in from a short stack to take down another nice pot. That short run gave him a shot heading into Day 2.

Still not among the chip leaders, challenges remained. On Day 2, Longenbach was all in preflop with pocket 10s twice against Ace-Queen and once against Ace-King to jump into the top 10 in chips.

After that, he never looked back on his way to the title. What does he plan on doing with his  winnings?

“I’m planning on using a chunk of it to put a down payment on my first home,” he says. “Other than that, nothing else planned at the moment. I will also be playing more poker and look forward to playing some more live events once live poker returns.”

Longenbach may have a big score under his belt, but won’t be traveling the live poker circuit any time soon. The 9-to-5 job will continue, but so will his card playing on PokerStars PA. He’s thankful for his poker friends who have helped him along the way.

“I’d like to give a huge shout out to all my friends and family that have always supported me and showed love,” he says. “I appreciate it more than I can put into words.”

TEAMING UP: WPT Partners with Budweiser for Celebrity Charity Game Debuting May 28

There are numerous challenges for live poker rooms and tournament operators because of the Coronavirus pandemic. Tournaments have been canceled and postponed with televised poker put on hold.

However, online poker has seen record numbers, Twitch poker views are up, and there have been many poker charity initiatives. The World Poker Tour is now getting in the act with a new celebrity poker event on Twitch

The King’s Celebrity Poker Challenge on ClubWPT debuts Thursday, May 28, at 8 p.m. ET. The event is produced in conjunction with Budweiser and benefits World Central Kitchen. The organization delivers meals to families, seniors, frontline healthcare workers, and more.

The game will feature celebrities and athletes competing remotely. The show makes use of video conference technology and WPT’s sweepstakes-based online poker platform, ClubWPT.

Charity online poker continues with major sponsor on board

The WPT series becomes the latest of several charity poker events during the pandemic. That has included a major celebrity event from PokerStars and the Keep the Lights On campaign. Partypoker and GGPoker have also run charity events.

For Celebrity Poker Challenge, Budweiser is donating $15,000 for each of the six players to World Central Kitchen. An additional $35,000 is donated in the winner’s name for a total of $125,000.

With most sports and live poker suspended for months, the event may give fans something to whet their competitive appetite.

From the business side of poker, the event includes a nice sponsor. Budweiser has major name recognition and building partnerships with major corporations hasn’t always been easy for series like the WPT and World Series of Poker.

A WPT sponsor in the tour’s early years, Budweiser has now added its name to another event.

“Budweiser has had a long legacy of an association with competition,” Budweiser Vice President of Marketing Monica Rustgi said in a news release. “We, like everyone else, are missing the excitement of watching a live game. Bud wanted to give people a chance to feel a little of that thrill of competition while staying safe at home.

“So with the World Poker Tour, we’ve assembled a cast of characters for a charity game for some light hearted fun and to make a positive impact by spotlighting the great work of World Central Kitchen.”

Where to watch and who will be playing?

The two-hour show will be simulcast across multiple channels including the WPT Twitch. The action will also be shown on Budweiser and World Surf League Facebook pages. The first episode features:

  • Chef José Andrés, World Central Kitchen founder
  • Pau Gasol, NBA all-star and champion
  • Jon Hamm, Hollywood actor
  • Jason Alexander, comedian and actor
  • Kevin Pollak, comedian and actor
  • Kelly Slater, 11-time surfing champion

As with other WPT programming, anchor Lynn Gilmartin and commentators Tony Dunst and Vince Van Patten will be part of the action.

“This incredible partnership with Budweiser is a trailblazing step forward in charity poker initiatives and televised poker,” WPT CEO Adam Pliska said.

“WPT is always looking to be innovative, and this partnership with Budweiser leverages our 18 seasons of world-class production and our ClubWPT online platform, to bring real poker into people’s homes during this unprecedented era without live events. We graciously thank our partners at Budweiser for their contribution of $125,000 to help those in need during this time.”

WSOP ROUNDUP: Global Championship Moves Online, New Series Announced; Site Seeks License in Pennsylvania

After announcing the postponement of the World Series of Poker in April, series officials made more news recently. The Global Casino Championship will now be played completely online at WSOP.com.

The move comes with live tournament poker still in a quagmire because of the Coronavirus pandemic. Players have shifted to playing online and operators have moved to meet demand.

As part of the announcement, the site also announced the new WSOP Circuit Online Season Finale will be held June 3-14.

Global Championship becomes an online event

Originally, the Global Casino Championship was set to be played in August at Harrah’s Cherokee in North Carolina. The annual $1 million event wraps up the WSOP Circuit season and allows players to qualify at individual tournament stops.

The event will now be held online in New Jersey and Nevada on Sept. 13 due to social distancing limitations.

“We want to do right by our players and see the promised prize money put up for grabs” WSOP executive director Ty Stewart said in a news release. “Hopefully the choice of an East Coast or West Coast destination makes it more viable for qualifying players.

“Our Online Circuit events have been huge successes to date and WSOP.com is a viable alternative for the last qualification spots and this year’s championship. We look forward to returning to Harrah’s Cherokee in 2021 but until then, the show must go on – online”

The move comes after WSOP.com has ramped up online offerings in recent months to meet added demand. The WSOP has also partnered with GGPoker to run the WSOP Super Circuit Online Series internationally.

More WSOP Circuit ring action heads online

The Global Championship is just the latest tournament to see schedule changes. The annual WSOP in Las Vegas has also been postponed to the fall. Series officials haven’t announced a date or any schedule changes yet.

In the meantime, poker players looking for action can collect some hardware in the Online Circuit Season Finale series. The festival becomes the last opportunity for players to win a championship ring this season.

The series runs June 3-14 with 12 ring events. The Season Finale will also award 13 spots into the Global Casino Championship to winners and the online “Casino Champion.”

Players will find a schedule full of No Limit Hold’em events with six-figure guarantees. Buy-ins range from $215 to $1,000 and the $525 Main Event is set for June 14 with a $300,000 guarantee. Here’s a look at the complete schedule:

2020 WSOP.com Online Circuit Season Finale

How does a player qualify for the WSOP Global Casino Championship?

Along with those 13 qualifiers from the Season Finale, all 2019-20 circuit event qualifiers will receive an invitation to the Global Casino Championship. Here’s how players qualify to participate:

  • Winning a WSOP Circuit Main Event
  • Accumulating points to become a Casino Champion
  • Being among the top 50 cumulative point earners across domestic WSOPC events
  • Winning a WSOPC ring and not otherwise qualifying

Players in the top 100 in the WSOP Player of the Year rankings can also buy in for $10,000.

WSOP.com is currently available to players in New Jersey and Nevada. The platform also shares a liquidity pool with 888poker in Delaware. The arrangement makes for some of the country’s biggest player and prize pools in the country.

WSOP.com may be getting closer to Pennsylvania launch

Since Pennsylvania began offering online gaming in 2019, only PokerStars has offered poker in the state. Many expected WSOP.com to become a player through its Harrah’s Philadelphia casino.

WSOP officials remain tight-lipped about its possible entry into the market. While Stewart didn’t offer a broad update, he confirmed to USPoker that the platform is currently going through the regulatory and licensing process with the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board.

Could a launch in 2021 be possible? That seems likely considering the state of live casinos in the state, which are still  shut down.

Pennsylvania currently remains a fenced-in market – meaning it couldn’t join an interstate compact without further legislative action. However, a move into the Keystone State offers players another online option.

Many in the state would be pleased to have an opportunity to qualify online for the WSOP in Las Vegas and other events.

The First Nevada Casinos Will Reopen On June 4

On Tuesday night, Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak announced that casinos throughout the Silver State will be able reopen on June 4. Phase 2 of Nevada United: Roadmap to Recovery plan begins on Friday, May 29.

Gyms, spas, bars, and other businesses will be able to open this Friday. Nevada casinos are on target to open next week. This comes more than two months after ordering casinos and non-essential businesses to close throughout the state.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Nevada Gaming Control Board (NGCB) held a public workshop online with updates from health experts for when casinos reopen. The workshop discussed a variety of reopening information such as frontline employees being tested for COVID-19, temperature screenings for incoming guests, housing guests that need to be quarantined, and more.

A good portion of the workshop looked at some of the health and safety policies that have already been released. NGCB will continue updating its policies for casinos as reopening looms closer. Casino operators aren’t required to share their plans but many have already.

Las Vegas casino openings

Nevada casinos are now taking reservations beginning June 4. However, not all casinos will open right away. Earlier this month, some of the large Las Vegas casino corporations with multiple properties revealed plans to reopen in phases.

Caesars Entertainment

Opening immediately: Caesars Palace, Flamingo
Closed: Planet Hollywood, Paris Las Vegas, Bally’s, The Cromwell, The Linq, Harrah’s, Rio
Opening next: The Linq, Harrah’s

MGM Resorts

Opening immediately: Bellagio, New York-New York, MGM Grand
Closed: Mandalay Bay, Luxor, Excalibur, Park MGM, Aria, MGM Grand, The Mirage

Station Casinos

Opening immediately: Red Rock, Green Valley Ranch, Palace Station, Santa Fe Station, Boulder Station, Sunset Station
Closed: Palms, Texas Station, Fiesta Henderson, Fiesta Rancho

Boyd Gaming

Opening immediately: The Orleans, Gold Coast, Aliante, Sam’s Town, Suncoast, Cannery, Eastside Cannery
Closed: The California, Fremont, Main Street Station

Individually operated casinos will be allowed to reopen as beginning June 4. Some casinos, such as Wynn and Red Rock, are opening restaurants in advance of the rest of the property.

Casino health and safety plans

Nevada casino companies have spent the past month preparing new health and safety plans. Each property will have its own plan that meets the requirements set for by the Nevada Gaming Control Board health and safety policy requirements for reopening.

The health and safety plans include everything from capacity limits upon reopening to cleaning plans and social distancing. There will be two noticeable changes when casinos reopen.

  1. The casino and every venue will be limited to 50% of capacity. Seating in bars, restaurants, and pools will be spaced to allow six feet of distance.
  2. Video poker, slots, and other machine games will only allow guests to play every other seat. Table games will only allow the following number of players at most:
  • Blackjack: Three players per table
  • Craps: Six players per table
  • Roulette: Four players per table
  • Poker: Four players per table

The casinos will use different tactics to try to ensure a clean and healthy gambling environment. Chips, cards, machines, tables, seats, and so on will be cleaned more than ever. Here’s a look at the various casino health and safety plans.

Each company has a plan that is specifically tailored for its guest. These are great references for anyone that already has a hotel reservation or someone just planning to visit one of these casinos.

What to expect when visiting casinos

Visiting a casino in Nevada will be different depending on where you go and when you go. Anyone looking for the traditional vacation might want to wait awhile while, since more venues inside the casinos will be open and more people will be allowed to visit.

Casinos on the Vegas Strip should be much more somber than usual when they first open. Fewer tourists flying to Las Vegas and limited capacity will make the casino experience feel more like 6 a.m. than the typical party atmosphere. This should change over time as capacity becomes larger and tourists return to casinos.

Locals casinos throughout Nevada could see pent-up excitement and large crowds from residents just happy to leave their house. At first, these casinos may have an atmosphere usually found on the Vegas Strip. Regional and locals casinos outside of Nevada have seen big crowds upon opening. There have been lines to get in. Limited seating for table games and machines have been as busy as the states allow.

One thing to expect before stepping foot into a casino is free parking. Caesars Entertainment, the Cosmopolitan, and MGM Resorts will all open without parking fees.
