PACKING A PUNCH: PokerStars Offers Players Chance to Get in the Ring with PennsylMania

Poker players in Pennsylvania have another big event to look forward to this Sunday. On Wednesday, PokerStars announced the launch of a new tournament dubbed “PennsylMania.”

The $250 buy-in tournament boasts a huge $250,000 guarantee. The event becomes the biggest event in the Keystone State to date.

Players won’t find beefy grapplers squaring off in a ring like at WrestleMania. But in PennsylMania, they can unleash their inner Hulk Hogan or John Cena for a shot at a poker title.

Another major PokerStars event in PA

PennsylMania is set for May 17 and starts at 5 p.m. ET. The two-day event offers yet another chance for a nice online payday in PA.

It becomes the latest in a string of tournament series and events since PokerStars PA launched in November 2019

Players can also get in on the action for less with a depositor freeroll also running on May 17. The freeroll will award 50 PennsylMania seats.

PokerStars gets boost from pandemic players

How manic will the new tournament get? It’s a good bet there will be another nice turnout for PokerStars PA. The platform set a record in March with $3.1 million in revenue.

That trend could continue when April revenue numbers are announced. Players continue to clamor to online poker. PokerStars PA was seeing traffic of as high as 1,800 players in a 24-hour peak by mid-May.

Stars has run some of its well-known signature events since launch. That has included the PACOOP, the first online series in the state, and the popular Bounty Builder Series.

April’s PASCOOP (PA Spring Championship of Online Poker) featured 100 tournaments with a guaranteed prize pool of $2 million.

The events attracted 79,892 total entries, including 56,737 individual players and 23,155 re-entries. That produced more than $3.2 million awarded to players.

Staying at home, playing cards online

More states may be opening up across the country, but that doesn’t mean the mini-online poker boom won’t continue.

Live casinos have recently begun announcing reopening plans as well. But with players constantly in close quarters, live poker will be difficult to restore any time soon.

Major tours like the World Poker Tour and World Series of Poker remain in a standstill. Both have pushed further into online poker in recent months however.

The WSOP also announced in April that the annual summer series in Las Vegas has now been postponed to the fall. Online events are expected to run this summer however.

Online poker has also benefited from the lack of sports being played. Leagues are showing some early signs of returning, but many are still weeks away.

Many of those sports bettors, as well as other casino gamblers, have turned to online poker for action. That has also been the trend internationally.

With so many still looking to wager, the online poker wave should continue in the coming weeks.

Two more PokerStars promotions for PA, NJ players

Along with PennsylMania, PokerStars recently launched the Stars Rewards Showdown. The promotion runs from May 11-31. Those playing real money games win Stars Rewards Chests containing two cards.

Those cards will be used in a showdown where the best hand can win varying prize amounts. Players lucky enough to hit a royal flush will collect a prize of up to $2,500.

To get in the game, players opt in to the promotion in the Challenges Window. Players can also opt in for the PokerStars Cardex promotion, which runs through May 24. Players will be given a red or black card on a spinning device known as the Cardex.

Those then playing any No Limit Hold’em cash game have a shot at a mystery cash prize of up to $5,000. A player dealt his or her selected card in a game and then win the hand progress up a step.

The color of the card on the Cardex must match the suit of the winning card. Players need to complete all five reels on the Cardex to receive a cash prize.

New Jersey

  • PokerStars NJ – The largest online poker operator in world offers plenty of cash game and tournament action in New Jersey. New players depositing $20 receive $30 in free cash and $10 worth of Spin & Go tickets.

Other states

Those in other states have more limited options when it comes to online poker. Sweepstakes poker sites offer players a chance to play for cash and prizes.

Global Poker may be an option for players in other states (and much of Canada as well). The company’s model is based on social gaming. Players can purchase Gold Coins for ring games and tournaments.

As a bonus, players receive Sweeps Coins – which can be used in tournaments and ring games. Unlike Gold Coins, Sweeps Coins can be redeemed for cash prizes. New players can earn a free $20 Sweeps Coin package with a verified account.

Keep It 100 tournament pays out half-million in first week, with more to come

Throughout May, WSOP.com has been offering players a $100,000 guaranteed daily tournament until that minimum is missed. The $215Keep It 100” had paid out more than $500,000 in its first week and continues.

All players in the event also earn a spot in a progressive $10,000 guaranteed freeroll. Every day the Keep It 100 meets the minimum guarantee, $5,000 will be added into the prize pool. That could mean up to a $100,000 freeroll.

That total had already reached more than $35,000. The Keep It 100 available to players in Nevada and New Jersey.

Global Poker

Rattlesnake slithers on with big prize pools awaiting players

The major payouts at Global Poker continue. In Sunday’s SC110 NLHE Deepstack event, the SC40,000 guarantee was topped by more than SC5,000. A player from Montana took home SC8,595.

The higher SC210 version of this event featured a guarantee of SC80,000. But that actually reached a hefty SC101,400 with a player from Alabama winning SC19,012.

These show some of the record numbers on the site lately. With more than two weeks left in the Rattlesnake Open, there is still plenty to be won.

The series runs through May 31 with a SC1.5 million guarantee. This is the biggest guarantee for a Rattlesnake series to date. Players will find buy-ins for every bankroll with nightly High, Medium and Low events from SC3 to SC218.

That includes three main events on May 24. Here’s a look at the complete schedule:

IN THE CARDS: Chatting with PokerStars Women’s Day Platinum Pass Qualifiers

PokerStars recently announced the qualifiers in the site’s International Women’s Day Platinum Pass competition. In March, PokerStars announced a contest for one deserving woman to earn a Platinum Pass.

The company received nominations from around the world. The finalists range from poker pros to business owners to a registered nurse to a volunteer with senior citizens. One thing they all have in common is a love for poker.

They also now have a shot at one of the biggest events in poker. A Platinum Pass has become one of the most-coveted items in poker. A pass guarantees a $30,000 all-expenses paid trip to Barcelona, Spain, for the PokerStars Players Championship (PSPC). The tournament will be held Aug. 20-24.

The first PSPC was held in January 2019, and became the biggest $25,000 buy-in live poker tournament in history

In April, USPoker spoke with two finalists – Oklahoma’s Meichelle Culhane and Las Vegas resident Jan Fisher. After highlighting these two women, here is some background on two others hoping for a trip to Barcelona.

A Q&A with two Women’s Day Platinum Pass finalists

Christina Read

Flowery Branch, Georgia (originally from Pine Prairie, Louisiana)

Profession: Bank sales executive turned semi-pro poker player

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I love poker and helping to grow women in the sport. I come from a small town in Louisiana and growing up could never even imagine all the opportunities that poker has opened for me. After moving to Atlanta when I was 18, I basically worked my way from the ground up to becoming a vice president of sales at a very large regional bank.

Being successful and doing it with enthusiasm and passion has always been very important to me. I feel that I have made my mark in the corporate world, and now would love to make my mark in the poker world.

I’m an advocate for Georgia for the Women’s Poker Association (WPA) which gives me the opportunity to do live interviews for our Facebook page.

I also serve as an admin/founder of a ladies’ poker group named Poker Queens, where we cheerlead for our fellow female poker players’ successes and share training and tips. I have a wonderful husband, three children, and two young granddaughters.

I’ve put in lots of time and study on my tournament game the last few years. In April 2019, I played in the Irish Poker Open and finished in second place in the ladies championship. I now have seven final tables in WSOP Circuit events and four final tables in WPT DeepStack events and numerous other cashes. I have faith that a ring is coming soon.

How does it feel to be a Platinum Pass finalist?

I am so amazed and humbled to have this opportunity that I never would have had otherwise. I literally jumped up and down when I received the email. Thanks so much PokerStars! I hope to represent my fellow female poker players in a way that makes them proud.

How are you going to prepare for the final?

I already eat, drink and breathe poker. I will continue to play online single table satellites while quarantined and study as much as possible.

How long have you been playing poker?

I’ve been playing cash games for about 15 years. I started seriously playing tournaments within the last three years.

How did you get into poker?

As a child I watched and played poker and booray with my grandpa and other card games with parents and family. When I met my husband 15 years ago, he was playing in a bar league and invited me to join – I was the first one out that night.

I then went home and studied all week and watched it on TV and the next week I got 12th. I was introduced to cash poker and played it a lot more. Years later I played my first casino tournament in Tunica, Mississippi, and won it. I’ve been hooked ever since.

What do you enjoy about poker?

Getting my Kings cracked! No really, everything. I look at poker as a prism to the world. There are so many lessons we can apply from poker to everyday life. Poker teaches us patience and resilience. It teaches us that in order to succeed we must stumble and fail many times.

Poker teaches us that we will never know everything and teaches discipline. Poker teaches that everyone needs a little bit of luck. And poker teaches us that with hard work and perseverance we can overcome any odds to be successful.

I also really enjoy all the unique and wonderful relationships I have developed through the years with the many wonderful, giving women in this sport.

How do you think we can encourage more women to get into poker?

We can start teaching girls that they can play complex strategic games such as poker at a young age. Traditionally these type games are taught to boys and I often see the results at the poker table.

Even in my own play sometimes I still want to be “ladylike” and not too aggressive, often to my detriment. Working on that and letting women know it is fine to do your best in all areas of life no matter the gender of your competition.

For young women, we should be encouraging them to learn the game and not just sit behind their husbands or partners at the table.

I am an advocate of women-only tournaments also for many reasons. I believe if every woman in poker would take a few women under their wing and help mentor and coach them we would see our numbers surge.

What would you say to women who are intimidated by the game of poker?

I think we can all be intimidated by poker starting out, male or female. While it is true that men have been ugly or overly aggressive to me at the table as part of their strategy to put you on tilt overall, you can find ways to use your gender to your advantage.

When we see any of this intimidation or disrespect in any way happening at the table we should speak up for ourselves and other women immediately. Dealers and floor staff should be trained to spot this also.

What is your advice to future female leaders in poker?

Go for your dreams. Don’t be afraid to fail because I am here to tell you even with my successes, I have had lots more failures. You never truly fail; you either win or learn or both. Be open to opportunities for growth and approach every table as a new adventure!

Terry Hatcher

Austin, Texas (originally from Montreal, Canada)

Profession: Business owner, tournament director, dealer

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I grew up speaking both French and English. My French side of the family played cards at the kitchen table, and I found an affinity for cards early in my teenage years. Today, I’m a US citizen, living in Austin for the past 20 years.

I have three grown children who fully support my decision to play poker. I’ve always had a competitive edge to my personality. I was female athlete of the year in high school and played on numerous sports teams – hockey, softball and skiing. For the last 10 years I’ve been training my horses.

In 2018 I joined the WPA, an organization focusing on women’s poker, a passion that I discovered while hosting a ladies league in my home. I am now the Texas regional representative and take my role on the road supporting women in both casinos and card rooms.

In 2019, I decided to get my TDA certificate and took a position in Austin’s largest card room as a tournament director. I feel fortunate to be working in an industry that I’m passionate about.

How does it feel to be a Platinum Pass finalist?

To be rewarded for the support I give to women in the field of poker is humbling. I truly enjoy railing, highlighting and supporting women.

How are you going to prepare for the final?

I’m going to focus on getting in shape both physically and mentally.

How long have you been playing poker?

In 2013, I started developing my skills in home games with friends, and 2014 was the beginning of my “poker career.”

How did you get into poker?

In 2014, I won a Carnival cruise ship tournament, which allowed me to play in their yearly $100,000 event. I didn’t win but I got the desire to play at a higher level. A few months later, I took a WPT training class in Las Vegas.

Then right out of the gate, in my first WSOP event, I placed 39th out of 4,500 players and from then on I was hooked!

What do you enjoy about poker?

I would say the social aspect of sitting with friends or strangers for eight hours at a table, sharing and playing the game. But the truth is there are times when you don’t say a word for hours, so I guess it’s mostly the competitive edge the game offers.

I enjoy outplaying the competition and striving for better success and deeper runs. It’s a challenge and I accept it.

How could more women be encouraged to get into poker?

Continue to create fun social ladies’ leagues, discover the interest, then help them turn it into a passion. Teach and grow the skills to play in open fields with continuous support.

We also need to share that the game of poker will help develop business skills to use in the workplace.

Do you think there are any advantages to being a woman playing poker?

Advantages and disadvantages, I think you must take what you’re given and leverage it, see it as a positive and not a negative.

What would you say to women who are intimidated by the game of poker?

Become part of a group that supports women’s poker, they will offer materials, forums and an outlet to discuss issues. Knowledge is power, the more you know about the game and the rules the more confident you will become at the tables.

What is your advice to future female leaders in poker?

My advice would be to always be approachable regardless of your position or success, always have an open door.

You often hear professional poker players say in interviews that they live with other pros or they are best friends with successful players. It’s a community where they share, live, and breathe poker.

They help and support each other throughout the journey – before, during, and after their success. Same as for female leaders, it’s a community no matter what level one is playing at. Lift each other up and share.

What more can women and men do to create better gender balance in society?

Make sure everyone has a seat at the table. Gender equality is seeing males and females as equal status and value. It is judging a person based on their merit, and not viewing them as inferior or superior purely based on their gender.

As a female tournament director, I encountered some of the prejudice. I was often seen as “softer.” I needed to express more conviction in my delivery, so I could change the mindset of some of the players. My answer to your question is: know yourself, your value and exude more confidence.

Hank Azaria’s Celebrity Friends Battle it Out in PokerStars $1 million Charity Tournament

A cast of celebrities return to the poker felt via PokerStars on Saturday to raise money for charity. The event includes players playing from home and was the brainchild of actor Hank Azaria and journalist, author, and screenwriter Andy Bellin,

The event, dubbed Stars Call for Action, will raise funds for global COVID-19 relief efforts. The online poker tournament will be hosted at PokerStars and broadcast live on Twitch, Facebook, and YouTube.

How does the PokerStars charity effort work?

Players taking part in the tournament will be using the free money option on the online poker site. PokerStars is putting up $1 million for the cause.

Viewers can also contribute to the cause via a donation button on their PokerStars platform of choice.

Top-finishing celebrities will direct their portions of the $1 million to a charity of their choice. Grants to charities will be administered by the Entertainment Industry Foundation. Fifty percent of the $1 million will go to Care International UK as well as proceeds donated during live stream.

Care International is a humanitarian charity that’s been PokerStars’ official emergency relief partner since 2014. The group works in more than 100 countries around the world to save lives, defeat poverty, and achieve social justice.

“This event is a great way to combine genuine giving where it’s needed with a way to stay home and yet still connect with people from around the world,” Azaria said in a news release.

“A friendly game of poker reminds us how life used to be, which hopefully we get back to soon. It’s a way for people to interact for a good cause and enjoy themselves at the same time.”

Who’s all playing and what can viewers expect?

Along with Azaria and Bellin, poker fans will recognize a long list of Hollywood stars. That includes many who are regulars at the poker table.

Those already registered include Edward Norton, Brian Koppelman, Amy Schumer, Bryan Cranston, Don Cheadle, Michael Cera, Jon Hamm, Jeff Garlin, David Schwimmer, Eric Bogosian, Jason Alexander, Brad Garrett, Michael Ian Black, Kevin Pollak, Tony Yazbeck, and Max Kruse.

Brad Garrett
Actor and comedian Brad Garrett will be one of the celebrities playing in the Stars Call to Action.

Registration remained open and more were expected to sign up. Viewers can expect some fun with hosts James Hartigan and Lex Veldhuis dropping in on players via their at-home cameras.

“This event began as a simple conversation between our team, Hank, Andy, and the Entertainment Industry Foundation, as a way to create positive entertainment and raise support for critical causes during these challenging times,” PokerStars associate director of public relations Rebecca McAdam Willetts said.

“We were thrilled that they came to us and have been blown away by the momentum it’s gained. With people increasingly using our products to connect, compete and stay social while safe at home, we are delighted to show how the game we love can be used to bring people together and do good – with the added bonus of surprising some poker fans along the way.”

Poker fans can get in the game

To add some extra competition, PokerStars is giving players and fans the opportunity to play against the stars.

PokerStars ambassadors, streamers, and celebrities have been holding competitions for seats in the action.

Separate fields of celebrities and players will play down to respective final tables and then combine for the ultimate showdown. Celebrities eliminated early will be added into a side event with the winner directing 10% of the total to charity.

The action gets underway at 2 p.m. (ET) and should offer plenty of laughs along the way.

The latest charity efforts in the poker world

The poker world is certainly no stranger to lending a helping hand. In April, numerous celebrities joined in an effort on an offshore poker site despite being unregulated in the US market.

The event featured major celebrities as well including Tom Brady, Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Adam Sandler. The event, dubbed All in for America, raised about $2 million for the Feeding America charity.

Poker Central, the RunGood Poker Series, and Global Poker have also teamed up for the Keep The Lights On initiative. The fundraising effort involves poker personalities Jamie Kerstetter, Jeff Platt, and Brian “TheGoldenBlazer” Frenzel.

The three will play poker tournaments to raise money to support freelance poker media members affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Donations are collected through the Keep the Lines On support site.

As of Friday morning, more than $30,000 had been donated to the cause. Frenzel also ran his own 24-hour online poker stream fundraising effort in April. He helped raise $2,300 for the Center for Disaster Philanthropy COVID-19 Response Fund.

No matter who comes out on top of the Stars Call for Action, many people in need will be helped in the process.

READY OR NOT: West Virginia Looks at Early Entrance into Online Gaming Market

After West Virginia’s approval of online gaming last year, iGaming and poker weren’t expected to go live until 2020. That appears to be changing as the WV Lottery Commission announced emergency rules this week that could mean going live possibly by July.

Whether that includes any type of poker in the small populous state remains to be seen. But the news offers some hope online poker could be in the Mountain State’s not-too-distant future.

So far, only New Jersey, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Delaware offer legalized online poker or gaming. Michigan also legalized online gaming in late 2019.

The federal government’s reinterpretation of the Wire Act has hampered intentions for interstate compacts until there is a legal solution. But the move by WV regulators should come as good news for the state’s poker players.

A look at the emergency rules for WV online gaming

Under the proposal, the WV lottery would have the authority to enact emergency rules and authorize online gaming for a period of 15 months. The state legislature would then need to permanently approve rules for the industry.

The iGaming proposal comes after all five casinos in the state have been closed because of the Coronavirus pandemic. With so many players at home and online gaming seeing record numbers, the proposal offers a chance to kickstart the industry in WV.

The emergency rules would allow for live-dealer casino games. Specific rules for poker include:

  • Must offer players an option of random seating
  • Hand histories available for at least the last five hands
  • Barring the use of computerized house players
  • Sites can pay players to play for promotional purposes

Will these rules result in WV seeing online poker in 2020? That’s an open question but state regulators seem to be moving in the right direction.

Could West Virginia online poker go live soon?

Like New Jersey, the law in the West Virginia not only allows for online poker but also other casino games. With a population of only 1.8 million, the state obviously has a small player pool.

An interstate compact would be necessary to create thriving player and prize pools. It may be too early to tell, but multiple operators launching right away seems unlikely.

However, two online platforms could be possibilities. PokerStars is owned by Flutter, which also owns FanDuel. The sportsbook and daily fantasy operator partners with Greenbrier in WV.

PokerStars hasn’t been hesitant of operating in states with fenced-in markets. The company currently operates online poker in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

The WV market may be small, but moving into the states would link three states geographically for PokerStars. That might allow Stars to offer a fairly easy transition to shared liquidity if the gaming industry prevails in the Wire Act case.

Another option might be partypoker. BetMGM operates as a party skin in NJ through MGM’s Borgata property.

BetMGM also offers sports betting in West Virginia. Adding online poker could offer a seamless gaming experience for sports betting, poker, and possibly online gaming.

The Wire Act remains an issue in WV

Despite all this WV online gaming news, the Wire Act issue  remains a major obstacle. As a rural state with only 1.8 million people, creating a legitimate fenced-in market would be challenging.

State legislators and gaming experts believe interstate compacts will ultimately be allowed. That includes State Del. Shawn Fluharty, who helped lead the WV iGaming charge.

“I don’t think it’s going to change anything,” Fluharty told PlayWV.com. after the state’s initial online gaming legislation became law. “Just like we saw PASPA sitting there forever, and how that law was plainly unconstitutional and had not been properly challenged.”

The Department of Justice released its reinterpretation of the Wire Act in January 2019. The new opinion argued that the act applies to more than just sports betting.

The issue has been in court ever since with the New Hampshire lottery suing and winning the first round. That has now shifted to federal appeals court and many in the gaming industry, including WV, are anxiously awaiting the results.

IN TRANSITION: WPT Shifts Gears to Online Poker, Expanded Television Footprint

With live poker in a quagmire because of the Coronavirus pandemic, several tournament series have been forced to alter plans. For the World Poker Tour that’s meant a renewed focus on online poker in recent months.

The efforts come as tours look to capitalize on so many players at home playing online poker in record numbers. The World Series of Poker has moved more of its action online as well with WSOP.com and GGPoker internationally. The series postponed the annual summer series to the fall.

The WPT is following a similar path but also adding to its syndication portfolio for its television program. These could be important moves as live poker may be slow in returning to a regular routine.

Online poker gets the spotlight at WPT

WPT partnerships in recent years may have been well-timed in adjusting to the current thriving online poker market. The company has co-branded live tournament events with partypoker and has also partnered with 888poker in the past.

The company has now partnered with party for the WPT Online Series, a 65-event series with $30 million guaranteed. The series also includes incorporating other WPT tournament series brands like WPTDeepStacks and WPT500

WPT CEO Adam Pliska
WPT CEO Adam Pliska

But beyond that, the site has also focused more on its ClubWPT online poker site. Tour’s talent is regularly featured in events to market the site, including Lynn Gilmartin, Vince Van Patten, and Tony Dunst.

ClubWPT has long been a focal point during WPT programming. The sweepstakes poker site offers players a chance to play for cash and prizes for a monthly fee. The site even hosts qualifiers for live WPT events.

In January, the site made some news by offering a $1 million bonus for any player who qualifies for a live event and then wins. Overall, there has been a renewed effort in marketing the product and that seems to have paid off.

The tour notes that “new registrations for ClubWPT are up 39% year-over-year in Q1 in 2020 and billed subscribers increased by 8.3% over the same period.”

Online and distribution are vital parts of the WPT portfolio and proving, once again, to be valuable in uncertain global times,” WPT CEO Adam Pliska said.

“ClubWPT is offering players the opportunity to remain competitive in a safe climate and we are exceptionally pleased with the new experiences offered to our users.”

Growing syndication deals becomes a major focus

Along with a shift to online poker, the WPT has been working to expand its programming efforts. In 2019, the tour announced a major deal with Mexico’s TV Azteca network.

The network’s free-to-air stations reach more than 95% of the Mexican market. Some highlights of the deal included:

  • Airing and promoting the WPT throughout Mexico and Latin America.
  • Licensing the WPT brand to the network to develop social poker and gaming products for the Latin American marketplace.
  • Using Spanish commentators to localize the tour’s 17 seasons of programming.

The tour also noted a 25% increase in overall television syndication over the last year. In January, the tour struck a major US syndication deal that added 15 million homes that can now view WPT programming.

OTT (Over the Top) viewership has also become a key player in reaching cord-cutting viewers. Over the last year, the tour has seen a 125% increase in OTT viewership. That includes deals with PlutoTV, SamsungTV, and Xumo, and OTT viewership reached 8.2 million in the first quarter.

Those numbers may rise even higher in the second quarter with so many players at home during the Coronavirus pandemic.

“The WPT television show continues to be a key asset for global programming as new content to replace sports on television,” Pliska said. “In our greatest challenge across 18 seasons, I am pleased to see the WPT business continue to bring poker to people’s lives around the globe.”

New THETA.tv partnership includes 24/7 WPT poker channel, live event coverage

Piggybacking on its syndication and OTT efforts, the WPT announced another deal last week with Theta Labs. The deal includes a new global distribution deal to launch a 24/7 live poker channel on THETA.tv.

Theta is an esports entertainment platform built on the Theta blockchain, a leading decentralized video delivery network. THETA.tv users around the globe are now able to access classic WPT programming such as:

  • WPTSeasons I-II and VIII – XVI
  • WPT Alpha8 Seasons I – III
  • King of the Club Season I

In addition, THETA.tv will feature live 2020-21 events held at HyperX Esports Arena in Las Vegas. Players can access the channel from any device including web, mobile, and smart TVs.

“Poker remains incredibly popular on television and the WPT TV show continues to grow across OTT platforms,” WPT Studios Vice President John McMahon told USPoker. “In the first quarter of this year alone, the show reached more than 13 million viewers. We expect this great partnership with Theta to only increase poker’s popularity to an engaged global audience.”

The WPT becomes the first major Theta content partner outside the esports category. The partnership reflects the platform’s plans to broaden its content portfolio. What does the deal say about the health of poker media in general?

“The deal with Theta shows, once again, that poker is one of the most consumable forms of content for OTT platforms,” McMahon said, “and the WPT television show is in high demand as more platforms look to expand their offerings to consumers.”

Crossing over to reach esports fans and players

The Theta deal comes after WPT was sold in 2019 to Black Ridge Acquisition Corporation. That folded the tour under the Allied Esports Entertainment umbrella and finds the WPT moving more into the esports business.

The Theta deal not only adds another distribution medium, but also a means to reach growing numbers of esports players. Those in the industry hope that includes more gamers willing to play in live events. Whether that can happen remains an open question.

For Theta, the partnership means offering viewers additional programming that might be popular with gamers. Twitch has already found success with live and online poker streamers. Theta Labs has already gone live with the 24/7 WPT channel.

“THETA.tv reaches more than 2 million esports fans monthly, and we’ve already seen their excitement for the new WPT content added to the platform,” Theta Labs co-founder and CEO Mitch Liu told USPoker.

“We expect most of our users will tune in to WPT TV since there is significant crossover between the esports and poker communities.”

PlayUSA Rewind: Online Poker Championships Flourish In Pennsylvania, New Jersey

While we’re not out of the woods yet, states across the country are beginning to ease restrictions surrounding the coronavirus pandemic.

Some will soon allow select businesses to reopen, of course with capacity limitations and social distancing guidelines in place.

Online poker and online casinos have thrived during the shutdown, but major sports remain sidelined and casinos remain closed.

On that note, on to the Rewind:

Online poker tourneys crush in PA, NJ

We expected online poker to pick up steam as stay-at-home orders permeated the country. Perhaps no better example of this occured via PokerStars in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

The inaugural Pennsylvania Spring Championship of Online Poker, featuring 50 distinct events, boasted prize pools totaling a whopping $3.2 million. Prior to the championship’s start, PokerStars dog-eared guarantees up to $2 million.

With more than 56,000 players and over 23,000 re-entries, PASCOOP finished with a total nearing 80,000 entries. The Main Event (High) carried a $200,000 guarantee, one that was easily topped as 1,315 entries pushed the prize pool to $368,200. The winner left with a cool $57,000.

Days later, the New Jersey Spring Championship of Online Poker, also hosted by PokerStars, posted similar figures.

Nearly $1.8 million was awarded in 96 events that featured over 33,000 entries, easily becoming the most successful tourney in the championship’s five-year history in the Garden State.

New Jersey’s Main Event itself included 620 entries that led to a $173,600 prize pool. The champ pocketed more than $30,000.

Michigan casinos struggling amid pandemic

It’s no secret that the nation’s retail gaming industry has suffered immensely since the coronavirus forced shutdowns. Michigan provides a microcosm of the struggle.

Bridge Magazine published a report detailing the continued closures of the state’s 23 tribal casinos, which have been shuttered since March 22 and will remain as such until at least May 15.

While other states have benefited from online gambling to at least maintain some sort of revenue stream, Michigan has land-based gaming only, for now. As such, the tail end of March and April concluded without a single legal wager made.

Without operational casinos, tribes are unable to fund services such as health, education and law enforcement, among other areas. Really, casinos provide a vast majority of funding for tribes.

For example, Bridge noted that as much as 60% of the budget for the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community stems from the Ojibwa Casino. Similarly, some 75% of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe is backed by gaming revenue.

The rest of the state certainly misses casinos, considering those properties have contributed more than $30 million to local governments and over $54 million to the state in 2019.

Some relief coming for smaller casinos

While the pandemic has made it difficult for businesses to stay afloat, the Small Business Administration recently updated its guidelines for Payroll Protection Program loans that exclude small US gambling businesses.

Translation: Smaller casinos could receive loans to pay wages, utilities and rent during the shutdown.

The update came as Congress funneled $310 billion to fund the program.

Initially, “small businesses” were defined as establishments with less than 500 employees, which makes them available to receive up to $10 million or 2 ½ months of payroll, whichever is less. The trouble, however, stemmed from the SBA classifying gambling businesses as risky and “of poor character,” thus preventing that industry from receiving aid.

Now, though, guidelines dictate that any business eligible for a loan is not be overlooked based on gambling-related income.

That said, those businesses must vie with many, many others in various industries to acquire such help. Some 30 million small businesses exist in the country, and the money released by Congress is enough for just 31,000 loans at the max payout.

US ONLINE POKER PLANS: Weekly previews and schedules for May 4-10

Plenty of tournament series fun continues this week. While PokerStars takes a few days off, Global Poker and WSOP.com kick off a May with two huge series. Here’s your complete online poker guide for this week.

  • WSOPMoney May series begins Tuesday; Daily “Keep It 100” added
  • Global PokerRattlesnake Open III kicks off Monday
  • Partypoker/BorgataPoker.com/BetMGM New events added to weekly tournament slate

Where can you play online poker?

American online players have a few options to get in the action. The markets are still small in comparison to large international poker markets. However, here are four states currently offering legal online poker for real money.

New Jersey

  • PokerStars NJ – The largest online poker operator in world offers plenty of cash game and tournament action in New Jersey. New players depositing $20 receive $30 in free cash and $10 worth of Spin & Go tickets.
  • partypoker/BorgataPoker partypoker is one of the best-known online brands around the world. New partypoker players get a free $25 via $10 in poker money, $10 in casino chips, and $5 in poker tournament tickets. Those using the BorgataPoker skin can earn $10 in cash with a $10 bonus.
  • WSOP.com/888poker – Players on the World Series of Poker-affiliated site have the option of a shared liquidity pool with Nevada and Delaware. Players can qualify for WSOP events in Las Vegas and circuit tournaments. The site is run on software by 888poker, which also operates in the state. WSOP offers new players a free $10. 888poker offers $20 in free play and up to a $1,500 deposit bonus.

Nevada

  • WSOP.com – WSOP.com offers players plenty of cash game and tournament action with a shared liquidity market with WSOP online poker and 888poker in New Jersey and Delaware.

Pennsylvania

  • PokerStars PA – New players at PokerStars PA can claim a $30 free play bonus and up to $600 match bonus. PokerStars also partners with FOX Bet in the state for sports betting. Players utilizing the FOX Bet’s new player offer will earn a free $20 for signing up that can be used for poker or sports betting.

Delaware

  • Doverdowns.com, Delawarepark.com, Harringtonraceway.com – These offer online poker in Delaware, however, it’s run through 888poker. The platform has a shared liquidity market with New Jersey and Nevada.
