PokerStars PASCOOP Off To Fast Start With Over $1 Million Paid Out, And Counting

The first ever Pennsylvania Spring Championship of Online Poker (PASCOOP) got underway on PokerStars PA last Saturday.

As has been the case with previous tournament series on the site, players are coming out in big numbers to create large fields and guarantee-exceeding prize pools.

Pennsylvania players staying at home, playing PASCOOP

Ever since the shutdown of casinos in the state due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic forced a temporary pause on live poker, traffic on PokerStars PA traffic has been higher than it has ever been since first launching just over five months ago.

Since mid-March, most evenings have seen 3,000-4,000 players or more logged onto the site, already twice the number typically seen previously. On Saturday, April 4 — the first day of PASCOOP — the number of “seats filled” exceeded 6,000 during the evening hours once the first events were underway.

Turnouts for tournaments that first Saturday night certainly reflected the heavier traffic, with prize pools more than doubling the guarantees in multiple events on Day 1 of PASCOOP.

Over $1 million won during first third of series

Indeed, the kickoff $100 buy-in Event #1-H: Nightly Stars – PASCOOP Warm-Up saw more than 1,100 total entries build a prize pool of $102,540.60, over twice the $50K guarantee and the largest prize pool of the series thus far.

Event $15-H, the $500 buy-in High Roller event scheduled last night, attracted a large turnout as well with 177 total entries creating a $83,190 prize pool, well above that tournament’s $50K guarantee.

About one-third of the 100 scheduled events have now completed, 16 each from the “High” and “Low” tournament tiers. Of those 32 tournaments, all but two exceeded the guarantees, the exceptions coming in a couple of $5 buy-in “Low” events.

Through 32 tournaments, the prize pools have totaled just over $1.05 million already, well over the $664K worth of guarantees to this point.

That puts PASCOOP on pace easily to exceed the $1,559,767 in prize money won during the first-ever Pennsylvania Championship of Online Poker in December.

Packed PASCOOP schedule leading up to 4/19 Main Event

Modeled after the long-running Spring Championship of Online Poker that takes place each year on PokerStars’ global site, the inaugural PASCOOP features 100 tournaments and runs through Monday, April 20 with the scheduled guarantees totaling exactly $2 million.

In the coming days the PASCOOP schedule includes more non-hold’em events, including pot-limit Omaha (tonight and again next Monday) and the 8-game mix (on Friday). There are numerous no-limit hold’em events as well at a variety of buy-ins and featuring many different formats. Click here for the full PASCOOP schedule.

The PASCOOP Main Event happens Sunday, April 19, the “High” version of which features a $300 buy-in and a $200,000 guarantee, while the “Low” will have a $50 buy-in and $100,000 guarantee.

Here’s a look at the turnouts and totals thus far during the first third of the 2020 PASCOOP.

Warm-Up Tournaments

Poker players staying quarantined are heading to the website in droves. The tournaments are seeing more action than expected. Palansky shares that “through the first 5 days of April and this new series we put together, we’ve seen terrific user engagement, with our guarantees on our warm-up events (12 events) awarding $634,408 in prize money, when the guarantees for those events totaled $247,500.”

House of Cards: American Poker Players Move Their Home Games Online During Pandemic

With many recreational and professional players now in self-quarantine, many are now playing even more online poker. For many, that means missing out on their regular home games with friends.

Not yet able to ditch social distancing, players have taken their games with friends online. That includes using traditional online poker sites, play money social games, and apps catering to players looking to play with friends.

Many are still finding a way to play cash games, sit and go’s, and sometimes even multi-table tournaments. Some players may settle up for a few bucks later and others play simply for bragging rights. Either way, poker among pals remains alive and well – despite Americans’ extended staycation.

An appetite for online poker with friends

With live poker stalled and casinos locked up tight, online operators have reported record fields and prize pools in the US. Friends playing their “home games” online may be a segment of the poker market not widely considered part of this.

Free money poker apps like Pokerrrr2 seem to be popular options. Several of these cater to players looking for their own club or game. Venmo or PayPal are often used to settle up if a bit of cash is involved.

Andrew Langston, 27, is from York, Penn., and works as a production planner at a paper mill. He and some friends previously held a monthly live tournament with points and a year-end champion.

Unfortunately, that had to be put on hold because of the Coronavirus pandemic. Instead, he now hosts games a few nights a week using a free-money app to get the job done.

“I lived in Charles Town, West Virginia, for a few years,” he says. “So my two home game groups [in WV and PA] combined into this app. It’s been cool to have other people play against each other.”

Langston’s group doesn’t play for major stakes. However, they find a little cash on the line is more fun and plays more like the real thing. Players buy in using Venmo beforehand and play No Limit Hold’em, Pot Limit Omaha, or PLO Hi/Lo.

“Usually we just run two $10 tournaments,” he says. “It’s more for fun than anything, but a little money in the pot makes it so people aren’t shoving every hand like the free-play money apps.”

Reuniting through online poker

Certainly playing online isn’t quite the same as mixing it up in person. But it at least offers some opportunities to battle it out and communicate. The sudden interest in playing online has even allowed some to reconnect with friends they haven’t seen in a while.

Josh Wolff, 36, works as a salesman for a food company in northwestern Pennsylvania. Since the COVID-19 pandemic he and a few other players have been playing small tournaments on Friday and Saturday nights.

“We’re averaging around 12 players per tournament, but it’s growing,” he says.

Unlike most Americans, Wolff and his friends can play legal real-money online poker. They use the PokerStars PA Home Game feature. This allows players to set up their own club and run a game or tournament with friends.

The feature has been around since 2011 and is now available to PA players. The house takes a 10% rake as in a traditional online tournament. Those outside a legal jurisdiction can play for free using the .NET version of PokerStars. Other operators offer similar options.

Wolff and his friends play tournaments from $10 to $30. Many in the group haven’t played together in quite a while, but the game has brought the group back together.

“It’s been a blast,” he says. “The bulk of the group is a bunch of us that used to play in a home game every Wednesday about 15 years ago. Now that most of us are married and have kids, we haven’t been able to assemble the same group since. So this makes it a lot easier.”

Twenty bucks and plenty of fun

Poker may be a strategic game played for money, but the social aspect also sets it apart. And at a time where millions of Americans are cut off from others, playing online can bridge the divide between friends and loved ones.

Some players even up their game with video or Twitch streams. Enjoying a couple beers with some bragging and needling a buddy can all still be part of the fun.

Dan Yaniro, 49, had run a Tuesday night poker league with about 20 friends for several years. The league hit the pause button, however, and Yaniro was looking for another place to play.

Like others, a free-play poker app has been a salvation – providing an opportunity to stay in the action.

“We play $20 buy-in tournaments,” says Yaniro, who lives in Delran, New Jersey, and works as a vending machine route driver and bartends on the side. “Everyone pays me through Venmo and then I pay the winners when the game ends.

“Everyone seems to like it. We’re playing more now online than ever.”

PA Gaming Review: Online Poker Home Games Offer Shred Of Normalcy

Life in the new normal continues to ripple through Pennsylvania’s gambling landscape. The overall shutdown has presented a new challenge to policing the proliferation of illegal gambling machines in the Commonwealth. Live! Casino in Philadelphia appears likely to shutdown over COVID- 19 concerns as well.

Risk factors for problem gamblers have increased in the current order of things. And on the plus side, there’s a way to replicate your Friday night poker game with the same old set of pals at the virtual table.

We’ll save that bit of redemptive news for last.

Problem gambling factors ratchet up with the virus

Pennsylvania is only one of four states with legal online casinos that offer an alternative way to play while retail casinos remain shut.

Factors associated with problem gambling that are exacerbated during the coronavirus pandemic are social isolationanxietystress, and depression. Sound familiar?

Yeah, that’s potentially a big problem, according to Keith Whyte, executive director of the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG), an advocacy organization for people and their families affected by problem gambling.

PlayPennsylvania reviewed the issue and looked at tools for preventing and dealing with problem gambling, such as helplines and websites.

Virus worries prompted a union walkout in Philly

Construction at the massive Live! Hotel & Casino in South Philadelphia is facing a shutdown that could blow its plans to open by New Years.

Work had continued during the virus shutdown based on a waiver, but it looks as if work will need to stop as soon as the building is secured.

But Sheet Metal Workers President Gary Masino ordered his men off the project this week.

Illegal gambling devices still targeted during virus shutdowns

Between 15,000 and 20,000 unauthorized gambling devices operate in PA, many in bars and restaurants that were ordered closed except for takeout.

But the shutdown order hasn’t stopped wagering on the unregulated devices. Aware of that, the PA State Police have checked 12,877 establishments during the shutdown.

In just two weeks, 53 warnings were issued, and four places have more serious but pending administrative violations.

Two places had their liquor licenses suspended by the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board (PLCB) for failing to abide by the governor’s order.

And more localized enforcement is soon to begin, funded by enforcement grants from the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB).

Online poker home games follow social distancing rules

Need some normalcy? But want to do the right thing and follow social distancing rules?

Try online poker home games at PokerStars PA. We offer a step-by-step guide to setting up your own.

Players within Pennsylvania can set up real-money cash games or tournaments with others in the state.

Or if you want to play with friends outside of Pennsylvania, you can also do that, but only for play money.

And for a chance at some large prize money, there is of course the PASCOOP series running now through April 20. Find the full remaining schedule here.

US ONLINE POKER PLANS: Several events highlight major action for week of April 6

The massive action continues this week in the suddenly growing American online poker market. Multiple operators have rolled nice series with big guarantees.

PokerStars, WSOP.com, and Global Poker have all brought more tournament action to players. That continues this week for the week of April 6. Partypoker has also launched the Spring Poker Open for players in New Jersey.

  • Doverdowns.com, Delawarepark.com, Harringtonraceway.com – These offer online poker in Delaware, however, it’s run through 888poker. The platform has a shared liquidity market with New Jersey and Nevada.

Other states

Those in other states have more limited options when it comes to online poker. Sweepstakes poker sites offer players a chance to play for cash and prizes.

Global Poker may be an option for players in other states (and much of Canada as well). The company’s model is based on social gaming. Players can purchase Gold Coins for ring games and tournaments.

As a bonus, players receive Sweeps Coins – which can be used in tournaments and ring games. Unlike Gold Coins, Sweeps Coins can be redeemed for cash prizes. New players can earn a free $20 Sweeps Coin package with a verified account.

PASCOOP moves into 2nd week

Last week PokerStars announced SCOOP returning to New Jersey about one month early. The company has now released a schedule for the first-ever PASCOOP as well for players in Pennsylvania.

The series runs April 4-20 with $2 million guaranteed across the 100-event series. There will be 50 “high” tier buy-ins and 50 “low” buy-ins.

Each event will feature the same tournament in both tiers. There should be something for every bankroll, with low events beginning at only $5.

Most events are No Limit Hold’em, but there will also be some Omaha, Mixed Games, and Seven Card Stud Hi/Lo. The $300 High Main Event runs April 19 and features a $200,000 guarantee. The $50 Low Main Event runs the same day with a $50,000 guarantee.

Other promotions include:

  • Daily $1,000 Second Chance All-In Shootout Freerolls – These are for players eliminated from any PASCOOP event before cashing.
  • $15,000 Main Event Depositor Freeroll – This event is set for April 19 with 50 seats added to the $300 High Main Event.

Here’s a look at the complete schedule of events.
