New Jersey stays solid

The Garden State held steady in May as NJ online poker sites brought in $2.4 million. That’s just a slight dip from $2.48 million in April.

WSOP.com held on to the top spot in the state, reporting $919,526 in revenue, according to the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement. That fell from $955,000 in April.

WSOP.com may have big months ahead in June and July as well with summer circuit and online bracelet events. The site is the only operator offering shared liquidity with Nevada and 888poker in Delaware.

In New Jersey, there are currently three operators:

Partypoker US Network saw a small gain month over month, up about 3% from April. The platform posted $768,639 in revenue and has seen some growth with regular Online Series. The site is also running big satellites this month for players in New Jersey and Michigan. Winners of the Ultimate Super Satellite events earn Las Vegas live tournament packages and the event should draw plenty of players.

PokerStars held the third-place spot, but did see the largest month-over-month growth. The site was up about 12% from May, reporting $719,706

Stars saw a small boost from running the popular Spring Championship of Online Poker (SCOOP) series in May.

New Jersey sees poker rooms reopen

Live players in New Jersey received some good news on May 21. The Tropicana announced a reopening for its poker room. Tropicana is the third poker room to reopen since the pandemic.

Poker rooms currently open in Atlantic City include:

  • Borgata
  • Harrah’s
  • Tropicana

A look at overall NJ online gaming

For May, New Jersey reported $108.2 million in Internet gaming revenue, up from $85.9 million a year ago. The Borgata/BetMGM Casino brand remained in the top spot among online casino operators.

That made the third month in a row that BetMGM held the #1 online casino site in New Jersey. The brand brought in $32.7 million compared to $31 million for Golden Nugget

NJ casinos posted $37.9 million in total gaming tax revenue for the state. Gaming taxes represent 8% of taxable casino gross revenue and 15% of Internet gaming gross revenue.

Pennsylvania iGaming reaches $100 million month

After months of back and forth, Pennsylvania has overtaken NJ for the number one online poker spot in the regulated market.

PA online poker numbers jumped to $2.6 million in May, up about $100,000 from April. This boost comes from the recent launch of BetMGM (Hollywood Casino) and Borgata Poker, now affiliated with Rivers Casino. Both are part of partypoker US Network.

PokerStars, partnered with Mount Airy Casino, now has competition in the state but remains the king of the Poconos. Stars brought in $2.25 million in May. Currently there are three real money online poker sites in Pennsylvania:

  • PokerStars
  • BetMGM (partypoker US Network skin)
  • Borgata Poker (partypoker US Network skin)

According to the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB), online gaming in total generated gross revenue of $101.3 million in May compared to $55.8 million in May 2020. This was the first time since the launch of iGaming that monthly revenue had exceeded $100 million. Internet gaming generated $41.7 million in tax revenue.

Live poker rooms are primarily running cash games still but tournaments are on the horizon. Rivers recently announced a tournament for June 27. The following poker rooms are now open:

  • Parx Casino
  • Mohegan Sun Pocono
  • Mount Airy Casino Resort
  • Rivers Casino Philadelphia
  • Rivers Casino Pittsburgh
  • Meadows Racetrack and Casino
  • Philadelphia Live Casino

Revenue flattens in Michigan

Michigan online casinos reported $94.8 million in gaming revenue for May. That number remains almost the same as reported from April. The May report includes $19.4 million for sports betting from a handle of $237.6 million.

“Adjusted gross receipts for Internet casino gaming were up two-tenths of a percent compared with April, which means state, city and tribal governments received more revenue,” Michigan Gaming Control Board executive director Henry Williams said in a news release. “The event-driven sports betting handle dropped 4.9 percent compared with April.”

The Wolverine State combines all online casino games and doesn’t separate out statistics for real money online poker in Michigan. There are currently two operators in the state:

  • PokerStars
  • BetMGM Poker (part of the partypoker US Network)

BetMGM saw month over month stability and led the state in gross revenue with $36 million. FanDuel saw an increase from last month and came in second with $16.3 million.

As in NJ, BetMGM Poker in Michigan is currently promoting the Ultimate Super Satellite event. That may add some to the site’s player ranks. Operators delivered $18.7 million to the state for:

  • Internet gaming taxes/payments: $18.1 million
  • Internet sports betting taxes/payments: $615,153

Currently six brick and mortar poker rooms have re-opened within state borders including:

  • MGM Grand Detroit
  • Motor City Casino Hotel
  • Greektown Casino-Hotel
  • Odawa Casino Petoskey
  • Firekeepers Casino Hotel
  • Island Resort & Casino

Online poker revenue drops but iGaming is up in Delaware

Delaware online poker saw a small decrease in May’s report. The First State showed total revenue of $35,251 for May.

Even though poker numbers were down, iGaming overall saw its best month in 2021. Delaware Lottery reported $910,282 in the month of May for overall online casino games.

888poker is the only operator in the state. The poker platform is showcased on three different skins in partnership with the state’s racetrack casinos including:

  • Delaware Park
  • Dover Downs
  • Harrington Casino and Raceway

Delaware Park continues to be the top online casino with May revenue of $19,902. Dover Downs reclaimed second place with $8,414.

Players also received some good news this week. Delaware Park is reopening its poker room on June 15, operating from 11 am to 3 am daily. This is the first poker room in the first state to reopen since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Crushing the series

No stranger to tournament success, Peters now has his second straight USPO Championship. Peters won three events and also scored an eight-place for a total of $832,950

With 646 points in the standings, Peters finished 162 points ahead of Sean Winter. Peters earned an additional $50,000 for the championship win.

Originally from Toledo, Ohio, Peters sits seventh on the all-time live tournament money winning list with $34.6 million. Along with his USPO success, the online game has also been good to him lately.

In March at partypoker, the $3,200 High Roller went his way in the WPT Online for $50,532. In August, Peter also came out on top of the WSOP Online $10,000 Heads Up Championship at GGPoker. That title brought him $360,480 and his second World Series of Poker bracelet.

Here’s a look at winners from each USPO event as well as recaps of the final six events. For a review of the first six events, click here.

Event 12: $50,000 NLHE – Winter for the win

When it came to the biggest buy-in of the series, Sean Winter answered the bell. He scored the series’ most prestigious event for $756,000 in a tournament filled with high rollers.

That included facing off heads-up with 2018 USPO champion Stephen Chidwick, who scored $504,000 for second. Other finishers included: Jason Koon (third), $336,000; Jonathan Little (fourth), $231,000; Sam Soverel (fifth), $168,000; and Bill Klein (sixth), $105,000.

Event 11: $25,000 NLHE – Peters does it again

Peters was near unstoppable throughout the series and this made his third tournament win of the 12 events. He scored $465,750 after topping Ivan Zufic head-up, which came after also winning Event 10.

The heads-up battle lasted only a single hand with both players getting all the chips in with pocket pairs. Peters held 10-10 to Zufic’s 9-9, which didnt improve.

Zufic took home $345,000 for his efforts. Other notables in the money included: Dan Shak (third), $224,250; Jake Daniels (fourth), $172,500, Vanessa Kade (fifth), $138,000; and Frank Funaro (sixth), $103,500.

Event 10: $10,000 Short Deck – Peters takes another one

The Short Deck action produced the smallest field of the tournament. The game is played by removing all 2s, 3s, 4s, and 5s from the deck.

The game makes for plenty of action and big hands. Peters seems comfortable with this game as well and topped Ali Imsirovic heads up for the title and $124,200.

Imsirovic was looking for his second straight USPO title after winning Event 9 and scoring five cashes in the series. Cary Katz took third for $43,200 and Thomas Kysar finished fourth for $27,000.

Ali Imsirovic scored yet another title at the US Poker Open.

Event 9: $10,000 NLHE – Ali Imsirovic rises to top

After entering the final table as chip leader, Ali Imsirovic continued to roll – taking home this title and $217,800. The win came after a fourth place finish in Event 8 and a third-place in Event 3. Andrew Lichtenberger took runner-up for $158,400.

A few other top finishers included: Cary Katz (third), $118,800; Vanessa Kade (fourth), $94,050; and Erik Seidel, fifth ($74,250).

Event 8: $10,000 Pot Limit Omaha – Jared Bleznick scores second PokerGO title

This event brought some twists and turns for Jared Bleznick. He worked his way up to chip leader before falling to a short stack.

Bleznick eventually battled back to score the win and $189,000. Maxx Coleman took runner-up for $126,000.

Other finishers included Christopher Usude (third), $88,200; Ali Imsirovic fourth, $63,000; Joseph Sanders (fifth), $50,400; and Frank Crivello (sixth), $37,800.

Event 7: $10,000 NLHE – Peters notches first of three wins

After winning the USPO championship in 2020, Peters got back to his winning ways in the series. He topped a field of 99 to add another USPO win and $217,800.

Heads-up with Jared Jaffee, Peters once again found the winner’s circle for $158,400. The final table included a host of other big names including: Andrew Lichtenberger (third), $118,800; Brock Wilson (fourth), $89,100; Alex Foxen (fifth), $79,200; Ivan Zufic (sixth), $59,400; and Dan Shak (seventh), $49,500.

Up next for PokerGO Tour

Action returns to the PokerGO Studio July 1-12 for the new PokerGO Cup and Heads Up Championship. The Cup series features eight events with buy-ins ranging from $25,000 to $100,000.

The $100,000 PokerGO Heads-Up Championship is a separate event planned for July 12. The tournament features a field of 32 players and should attract some of the game’s biggest high rollers.

Darren Elias Talks About Upcoming WPT Online Heads Up Championship Special Event

The World Poker Tour’s first live event of the season is set for June 18-22 at the Seminole Hard Rock in Tampa, Florida. However, the tour’s addition of more online poker events also continues this month with a special high stakes, heads-up event.

The $25,000 WPT Heads Up Poker Championship is an invitation-only event featuring some of the biggest names in poker. That includes Phil Ivey, Nick Schulman, Tom Dwan, Doug Polk, Landon Tice, and numerous others. Superstar DJ Steve Aoki is even making an appearance.

Four-time WPT champion Darren Elias, who recently signed as a member of Above the Felt Entertainment, will also be playing the event. He spoke this week with USPoker about his own involvement in the tournament.

Joining the heads-up battles

Heads-up live and online events have grown in popularity in recent months. Daniel Negreanu and Polk faced off

Darren Elias

from November through February in the High Stakes Duel at WSOP.com

Negreanu now battles Phil Hellmuth for the third time live on PokerGO on June 23. In March, Fedor Hold battled high stakes grinder Wiktor “Limitless” Malinowski at GGPoker.

Elias has expressed his own interest in getting involved in a heads-up challenge and now has the opportunity. He’s looking forward to the WPT event.

“I’m excited to play a special invitational event like this, both as a change of pace from regular tournaments and to challenge myself against some of the best heads-up players in the world,” he says.

The Heads Up Championship features 32 competitors and the WPT will live stream all matches. One-on-one poker is a different type of game and recent matches have attracted some major interest online.

“I think big heads-up events like this have been popular because they draw a lot of the more well-known players in poker and can be an entertaining spectacle for fans,” Elias says. “This event in particular has a few streamers and other gamers in the bracket with large followings so that should drive the viewer experience even higher.”

A look at the matchups

The drawing for the first round was held on Monday. Some of the more interesting matchups include:

  • Steve Aoki vs. Dan Smith
  • Brad Owen vs. Daniel Dvoress
  • Wiktor Malinowski vs. Nick Petrangelo
  • Andrew “Luckychewy” Lichtenberger vs. Stephen Chidwick

As the only player with four WPT titles, Elias has plenty of success as well as some nice heads-up experience. His titles include: the WPT Borgata Open for $843,744; WPT St. Maarten for $127,680; WPT Fallsview Poker Classic for $326,776; and WPT Bobby Baldwin Classic for $387,580.

In recent months, Elias has also found success online. In January, he won a $10,000 event for $448,842 as part of GGPoker’s Super Million$ series.

Elias now finds himself facing a bit of an unknown in his first-round matchup. That means using a more baseline strategy and adapting as he gains more information, he says. What’s his overall outlook on heads-up poker?

“Strategically, heads-up is a very mathematical game with little room for error,” he says. “Because you reach the final stage of multi-table tournaments so rarely, most of my experience has come in heads-up tournaments and high stakes sit and go’s online.

“It’s definitely a different beast and the best play in a given hand can vary a lot with the opponent you’re playing against.”

The online version also comes with some intricacies of its own versus live play, Elias says. If he had his pick, Elias would rather play heads-up in a live setting.

“The online heads-up game is much faster than live obviously,” he says. “I do prefer live for seeing an opponent and watching body language as that can be incredibly valuable and easier to pick up on in a heads-up match versus a full table.”

Looking to add a heads-up WPT title

Having the four-time WPT champion in the field adds some extra cachet to the event. A win would add even more to an already-impressive poker resumé.

“The World Poker Tour is thrilled to have its four-time WPT Champions Club member Darren Elias playing in this event,” WPT CEO Adam Pliska said. “Fans around the globe can look forward to watching Darren play as part of the live stream coverage during this event.”

Along with a host of big-name pros, the event features some other interesting qualifiers and players with unique backgrounds. Elias likes that the tour has added some variety to the field.

Always competitive, he’ll be looking for yet another deep tournament run.

“As a big supporter of the World Poker Tour, I’m excited to participate,” Elias says. “I’ve always felt confident in my heads-up game and think this field will have an interesting mix of top poker players and top gamers from other disciplines to create a unique competitive dynamic.”

Back in Action: Rivers Casino Announces First Live Poker Tournament Since Early 2020 With Plans for More

One of the reasons poker players wear sunglasses is that eyes express emotion. Jim Moore‘s pair of peepers can’t hide his excitement. Players are returning each week to the Rivers Casino Poker Room where he is the manager.

Capacity limits have been lifted. The plexiglass has been removed. Philadelphia dropped its indoor mask mandate. But if you want to get Moore really excited and see his eyes widen to the size of saucers, just talk about poker in Pennsylvania.

Moore is optimistic about what he’s seen and what’s ahead for Philadelphia’s first poker room:

“From the day the plexiglass came down in early June to now, it’s been like lightning. We are playing 8-handed instead of 7-handed. Thunder Thursdays is the cornerstone of our high-hands during the week and every Thursday I am seeing people I haven’t seen in 18 months,” said Moore, Rivers Philadelphia Poker Room Manager.

Here, we highlight what the poker room at Rivers Casino Philadelphia has planned for the summer 2021 so far. No, your eyes aren’t playing tricks on you; poker tournaments might start again in Pennsylvania soon.

Welcome Back Tournament at Rivers Casino Poker Room

Rivers Casino Poker Room will hold a welcome back celebration on June 27 with $500 high-hands running every half hour from 2 p.m. to midnight.

The day will definitely be a cause for celebration for Pennsylvania poker players. Rivers Casino Poker Room announced plans for the first poker tournament since March 2020.

Rivers Casino Poker Room Welcome Back Tournament

  • When: Sunday, June 27 at 11:15 a.m.
  • Buy-in: $240 No-Limit Hold ‘Em ($30 registration fee).
  • Guaranteed prize pool: $20,000
  • Details: Starting stack of 20,000 chips, 20-minute levels, Big Blind Ante. For full tournament details, visit Rivers Casino Poker Room’s website. Or follow them on their (very amusing) Twitter page.

PA poker tournaments returning regularly?

Through all the restrictions and changing rules, Moore says one question remained a constant: “When are poker tournaments coming back?”

Rivers Casino Poker Room worked closely with the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board which approved the Welcome Back Tournament.

“The reaction to the Welcome Back Tournament has been bananas,” said Moore. “We are so thrilled that so many people are excited to come play.”

Moore told PlayPennsylvania they are hoping to bring back tournaments regularly, three times a week, starting in July.

Moore misses tournaments, too. He says he is a “tournament guy at heart.”

“In this region, there is a really strong core of tournament players. Once you set that routine, you get a group regulars. I like the camaraderie tournaments build and the schedule. I love our tournament product here and have spent a lot of time working with our players to get it to where we want it to be. Not having tournaments, is like not having your right arm.”

High hands at Rivers Casino Poker Room

Rivers Casino Philadelphia offers daily high-hands totaling over $215,000 in June. As previously mentioned, Thunder Thursdays highlight the poker schedule. Poker players at Rivers Casino Poker Room can win $500 every half hour from noon to midnight.

Jim Moore, Rivers Philadelphia Poker Room Manager. (Photo by Katie Kohler)

Other featured promos include $500 high-hands at select times on Sundays, Mondays, and Wednesdays, plus $400 every 30 minutes on Philly Fridays (noon to 2 a.m.) and Super Saturdays (11 a.m. to midnight).

“A few years ago, we moved away from bad beat jackpots and towards high-hands. Instead of us giving out a $300k jackpot, if we ran $200-250k in high-hands for the month it will hit more people each day. We average giving out 20-30 high-hands a day. It adds up over time and rewards our regular players more often,” said Moore.

A celebration for poker players and staff who endured a long way back

Rivers Casino Poker Room closed as a part of the property-wide shutdown on March 15. The casino reopened on July 17; however, poker wasn’t included per the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board’s initial COVID-19 safety rules.

Pent-up live poker demand

Rivers Casino Philadelphia was the first to reopen its poker room on Oct. 23 with approval for up to 14 tables with a capacity of 100 guests. Under normal circumstances, the room has 28 tables.

An order by PA Gov. Tom Wolf caused the casinos to close from Dec. 12 to Jan. 4. However, even when they reopened on Jan. 4, casinos and poker rooms were not permitted to serve drinks. That rule wasn’t lifted in Philadelphia until May 2021.

“We’ve been pent-up. The team has gone through a ton,” said Moore who praised the Rivers Casino Poker Room team for their high-level of safety standards and the customers who have been “very patient with us.”

“Poker is a social game. As things start to return to normal, we wanted to celebrate the team and invite back our tournament players.”

Heading to play in Vegas with partypoker

This continues a satellite tradition for US online poker operators. Party has offered major satellites for live tournament events for years.

While WSOP.com regularly offers qualifiers to the World Series of Poker each summer, that series has moved to the fall this year. With numerous live series still running this summer, party is still offering players the chance at a poker getaway.

Players can also choose to hang on to that buy-in cash for this fall’s WSOP Main Event as well. One in 25 Ultimate Super Satellite players will win a tournament package. That may be used for entry into the following Las Vegas land-based tournaments:

  • $10,000 Wynn Millions – $10 million guarantee, June 25 – July 2
  • $5,000 WPT Venetian – $3 million guarantee, July 2-7
  • $10,000 WSOP Main Event – Nov. 4-17

Satellites start as low as $5

If $1,060 is a little too high for the poker bankroll, daily qualifiers are already underway and run through June 19. Satellites range in buy-in from $5 to $250, offering a shot at some big Vegas poker for a small buy-in.

“I am glad that partypoker is offering some small buy-in satellites,” says Pete Hildenbrand, a poker player from Medford, New Jersey. “I know it is a little bit of a long shot, but I like being able to take a chance to get into the $1,060 event for only $5.”

The Ultimate Satellite is available to partypoker players in New Jersey and Michigan as well as the Borgata Poker and BetMGM skins.

Another chance for players to win big

Partypoker continues to allow players to get into major tournament events. Many players dream of one day playing in a big event that normally might be out of reach.

Since partypoker landed in New Jersey, the site has always given online players a chance to jump in the action.

In 2014, New Jersey resident and business owner Dan Jiacopello was one of the first partypoker satellite winners. This player from the town of Egg Harbor scored a $10,000 seat in the WPT Bellagio Diamond Classic

“I won my seat online through a sattie,” Jiacapello says. “Unfortunately, I didn’t cash in the live event, but it was an exciting experience to be able to play in a huge event in Las Vegas”

Jiacapello was even featured by the WPT in a video promoting the event.

The 12-event series runs through June 15 at the PokerGO Studio and has attracted a host of big buy-in specialists. Plenty of action remains and here’s a quick look at the events so far.

Plenty of big names rose to the top in this event, including a final table with Steve Zolotow and Daniel Negreanu. Those poker heavyweights would take second ($136,000) and third ($88,400), respectively. It was Poker Hall of Famer Elezra taking the championship for $183,600.

For Zolotow, this was his third final table appearance of the series. After leading on Day 1, David “ODB” Baker finished seventh for $34,000.

Elezra has been a favorite among fans for years after appearances on shows like High Stakes Poker. This was his first win since scoring his third WSOP bracelet in 2019. The event attracted 68 entries for a $680,000 prize pool.

Negreanu took to Twitter to note some particularly unlucky runs Baker experienced at the final table.

Event 5: $10,000 No Limit Hold’em – Weissman stages rally for win

Joey Weissman needed some help several times in this event. He scored five double-ups, including two heads-up against Adam Hendrix, to take the title.

When play did reach heads up, Hendrix actually held a 6 to 1 chip advantage over Weissman. But those big all-in wins turned the tide and he rallied, eventually scoring a USPO championship and $204,000

The event brought in 85 entries for an $850,000 prize pool. McKeehen continued his impressive run in the series, finishing third for $102,000.

Several big names cashes in this event and some of those included: Cary Katz (fourth for $85,000), Nick Schulman (eighth for $34,000), Negreanu (10th for $25,500), Ali Imsirovic (11th for $25,500), and Shannon Shorr (13th for $17,000).

Event 4: $10,000 Big Bet Mix – Riordan rolls to victory over poker superstars

John Riordan topped two of the hottest names in poker on his way to this big win and $163,200 first-place money. High stakes regular Sean Perry took runner-up for $105,600.

Alex Foxen finished third for $72,000 in an event that produced 48 entries for a $480,000 prize pool. For Riordon, the win becomes one of the biggest of his career and this player from Florida now has four USPO cashes this summer.

Event 3: $10,000 No Limit Hold’em – McKeehan wins with quads & double knockout

Things certainly went McKeehen’s way in this tournament and a thrilling final hand highlighted the action. Battling three-handed with World Poker Tour regular Ray Qartomy and Ali Imsirovic, both moved all in and McKeehen made the call.

Imsirovic was down to a single big blind after losing a big coin flip the previous hand to Qartomy. He moved in with 106♥ before McKeehen raised with J♥J♦.

Qartomy then moved all in himself with 5♠5♦ and McKeehen quickly called. The flop brought J♣2♠A♠ to give McKeehen a set. The turn of the J♠ finished off the win for McKeehen with quads.

The USPO finish marked McKeehen’s first cash ever in the series and he took home $200,200. The 2015 WSOP Main Event champion now has almost $17 million in live poker tournament winnings.

For runner-up, Qartomy banked $146,300 and Imsirovic scored $100,100 for third. The win and later third-place finish vaulted McKeehen to the top of the USPO standings. The tournament produced 77 buy-ins for a $770,000 prize pool. Here’s a look at the final two hands.

Event 2: $10,000 Pot Limit Omaha – Soverel cruises to

Sam Soverel came into Day 2 as chip leader with almost half the chips in play. He continued to dominate when play resumed.

Soverel eventually finished off Jordan Cristos heads up for his first USPO win and $175,500. Now with $15 million in live tournament winnings, he has three USPO cashes this summer. The event featured 65 entries and $650,000 paid out to players.

Event 1: $10,000 No Limit Hold’em – Jake Daniels bottles up a title

The inaugural event produced the biggest field of the series so far. Jake Daniels topped a field of 95 entries for a $218,500 score.

The Texan faced quite a final table before besting Dan Shak heads up. The others included Barry Hutter (third for $114,000), Stephen Chidwick (fourth for $95,000), and Steve Zolotow (fifth for $76,000).

This marks Daniels’ first USPO Open title and he now has $1.6 million in live tournament winnings. Shak won $152,000 for runner-up.

Looking at events ahead

Plenty of action remains in the US Poker Open in the coming week with six more events on the schedule. Day 2 of Event 7: $10,000 No Limit Hold’em plays out today with Andrew Lichtenberger leading the final table.

Also among those returning are Shak, Foxen, Brock Wilson, Jared Jaffee, and David Peters. The champion wins $217,800 and the tournament has eclipsed the field for the opening event.

The stakes get raised in the coming days with a $25,000 event set for June 13. That’s followed by a $50,000 event to close the series on June 14.

Plenty of high rollers should be out in force for those two. The series is the first featuring fantasy gaming from SuperDraft and USPoker recently took a look at this new gaming option.

All final table action can be seen on the PokerGO app. Here’s a look at the remaining events:
