Adjusting to online cash games

The growing number of online poker players in US regulated markets has been a plus for cash game players looking for action.

When playing hands, Gagliano advises being more discerning for a better route to success over the long run.

“The biggest mistake that I see players making is simply playing too many hands,” he says. “It can be very tempting to play lots of differently suited hands or hands that have an Ace in them, but in most situations it’s best to stick to better starting hands.

“Playing a stronger range preflop will also make the rest of the hand much easier to play, as it’s easier to make better decisions when on average you’re starting with better hands.

For tournament players looking to add cash games, Gagliano also has some advice. The transition can be difficult, so it may be wise to play at lower stakes than your usual tournament range.

“Give yourself a chance to get used to the play style in cash games before moving back to your usual buy-in level,” he says.

Another important factor is picking a cash game format that closely matches the tournaments you’re used to playing. For example, if you play eight- or nine-handed tournaments, don’t jump into heads-up or three-handed cash games with fast and aggressive play.

“Instead, take some time to find some nine-handed cash games or at least some full six-handed tables so you can ease yourself in,” Gagliano says.

Analyze playing styles

Additionally, take notice of the differences in playing style between tournaments and cash games. Most tournaments have antes while most cash games don’t.

This difference affects play preflop tremendously, Gagliano says. Stacks are going to almost always be deeper in cash games. Hands that work well in tournaments might not always be great at 100 big blinds deep.

It’s also productive to analyze the play of others at the table, keeping in mind some key ideas.

“Try to take notice of what the better regulars are doing,” he says.

Some concepts to consider when analyzing opponents include:

  • What kinds of sizings are they commonly using?
  • How often are they playing pots from under the gun or from the button?
  • Why are they playing tighter in certain spots or looser in others?

“The transition to cash is a rewarding one,” Gagliano says, “and once you start figuring out how to better play some of these unique situations you will quickly feel yourself improving as a poker player.”

Looking for tells

Finding a tell on an opponent in a live game has always been a big part of poker. Is a particular player doing something that gives away the strength of his hand?

While it’s not quite as easy, online players may also have some tells.

“The biggest tells I look for in online cash games are bet sizing tells,” Gagliano says. “Try to figure out what type of player someone is by how they think about bet sizing. Do they bet big with their strong hands, or do they bet big when they’re trying to get you to fold?

“If you can figure out how someone thinks about their sizing, you can gain extremely valuable information on what they may be holding. Sometimes you can gather a large amount of information about how a player thinks just by seeing one or two hands that they’ve played.”

Mixing in some successful bluffing

Finding the right time to bluff can really pay off in certain situation. On the other hand, bluff too much and that chip stack can be hacked away by opponents. That’s the tightrope players must walk. But Gagliano notes that occasionally mixing in some bluffs can be very rewarding in the long run.

“This is a complex topic worthy of a much deeper discussion, but to simplify: you need to bluff sometimes in poker because if you were never bluffing, then no one would ever call your bets, and you wouldn’t be able to make money,” he says.

Pick bluffing spots based on your hand and compare it to all the overall hands you might have in a situation. This helps analyze if it’s time to make a move.

“If you find yourself in a situation where you very normally have a very strong hang, but this time have a very weak hand,” Gagliano says, “then you’ve likely found a very good situation to start bluffing.”

New role at LearnWPT

As a longtime poker coach, Gagliano not only brings a history of teaching others but also considerable experience. He’ll be helping out both tournament and cash game players.

“I’m very excited to be part of LearnWPT,” he says. “I’ll be making strategy content to help others improve their game. Being that I specialize in both high stakes multi-table tournaments as well as cash games, players can expect to see me produce a variety of content.

“I hope to help players to better bridge the gap between solid theoretical play and high-EV [expected value] exploitative play.”

Players on the partypoker US Network have already become used to LearnWPT’s strategy offerings. The site recently partnered with the network to help players improve their skills as well as streaming some final table action.

Gagliano now becomes another addition to the team and hopes to help players create their own poker success stories.

Team Crap Shoot: Test Driving The New PokerGO Fantasy Game During US Poker Open

Fantasy poker has always been an interesting concept in theory. As in any sport, selecting a few players and following the action with a few bucks on the line makes the event more fun.

But in operation, poker isn’t always the easiest game to “fantasy-fy.” Instant stat updates aren’t easy and determining which players are actually playing an event can be difficult.

PokerGO and SuperDraft are trying to make the process easier with a new partnership kicking off with the US Poker Open (USPO). The series features a 12-event schedule running June 3-15.

I took a test drive of the new poker offering to see how DFS poker (DFP?) actually works. Would I coach this team to a winner or have to regroup? The site offered a $1,000 freeroll for several events and here’s how I fared in the first event of the series.

Getting started

The lobby is fairly easy to navigate and players will find a “Poker” tab right at the top of the page among other sports. Seems a bit strange to see poker parked right between MMA and NASCAR options. Cards just doesn’t seem to have quite the adrenaline of those two.

The first USPO event on tap was a $10,000 No Limit Hold’em event with plenty of big names in the field. Clicking on poker quickly brings up the first USPO fantasy contest for the event. Click on that and the question becomes: who to pick?

Entrants are asked to pick five players: a champion and five “flex” options. A quick scroll down and users will find names like Daniel Negreanu, Phil Hellmuth, Ali Imsirovic, and David Peters instead Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes.

At SuperDraft, instead of using a salary cap, point multipliers differ by player. Also, picking the champion correctly awards an extra 50%.

Determining which players to select for your team isn’t an easy choice. It’s not always a sure thing a player will even compete (especially post-pandemic).

The site seems to have solved this by allowing a few hours into the tournament to make roster changes. But a user has to follow along to determine if a player is at the table or chilling back at the pool instead.

Setting a lineup

Not much scientific thought or reasoning went into selecting my squad. For the champion, I chose Imsirovic at 1.5x. He seems to be winning everything over the last few years and has five high roller wins already this year.

I added a few more names that are also regulars in these high roller events including Sean Winter (1x) and Stephen Chidwick (1.15x). Winter is consistent in PokerGO events, with several final tables and a win this year.

Chidwick won the inaugural USPO event and seems like a nice choice coming back from the pandemic. He’s sixth on the all-time live tournament money winning list, but his last live score was pre-pandemic.

Still, Chidwick was another nice option and I felt good with these three selections.

Sean Perry seemed like a nice choice with a 1.65x multiplier. He’s been hot and sits second behind Imsirovic in the PokerGO Tour standings. He has two wins and two runner-ups in PokerGO High Rollers since April.

Finally, I added Cary Katz at 1.25x. The PokerGO proprietor and businessman seems to have a knack for running deep in these big buy-in events. He has a win and two third-place finishes in these events since January. Bam, that roster seemed ready to crush the tables in Las Vegas.

Reviewing the roster and following along

Team Crap Shoot was set. How would this squad of poker dynamos perform? That’s all part of the fantasy football, I mean fantasy poker fun.

That lineup seemed solid. I spent a whole 10 minutes figuring out who to pick, and more importantly, who would actually be playing. Were there some better players out there? Probably.

But these events feature a ton of great players. Narrowing them down seems a bit like a crap shoot. A mix of top names with even-money multipliers and those who might pay a bit more here and there seemed like a nice approach.

All I had to do now was sit back, watch my guys perform as expected, and then collect my winnings. Right? As most fantasy sports players know, it doesn’t always work that way.

After jumping in the SuperDraft poker action, it was kind of interesting watching the action unfold. The site makes use of PokerGO live reporting and chip counts to update stats throughout the day.

This isn’t quite like checking out your team on NFL Sunday. Live reporting obviously isn’t updating every player’s chip stack in the field constantly. Updates on the app are a bit intermittent, but players can get some of the feel of near-live team updates.

As the tournament played out, I did find myself checking in on the mobile app and reading the live reporting. It was fun seeing how my poker warriors fared.

Some early success

Those who enjoy following tournament updates now have an added element of some skin in the game. Things looked nice early on for my team.

Imsirovic and Chidwick picked up some pots to move way up in the standings. Yes.  Katz snagged two pairs for a big win. Nice. Perry was making some moves and vaulted up the leaderboard. Let’s roll.

Stephen Chidwick returns for the final table on Friday in the opening event of the US Poker Open. (photo courtesy of PokerGO)

Four of my five players were earning some points. Things seemed to be looking like I’d have a nice late-day sweat. I envisioned my super-roster going deep late into the night.

As play advanced in the evening, my champion selection, Imsirovic, continued to pick up steam. After a few eliminations, he surged to the top. I’d probably have a few guys in the money and moving on to Day 2’s final table.

Team in trouble

And then things began to unravel. Winter hit the rail early, but at least re-entered. Perry hit the exit door a bit later. My stable of thoroughbreds began coming up lame.

Imsirovic saw a massive downswing as well and Chidwick seemed the only one keeping hope alive. Some intrasquad conflict hurt team morale. Winter eliminated Imsirovic and the roster continued shrinking.

Soon Chidwick was all that remained of Team Crap Shoot. He now sits sixth out of the final seven players with Dan Shak leading Friday’s final table. A Chidwick win might secure a buck or two, but that seems unlikely.

Two SuperDraft players named “tx420tx” and “thebiginch” sit atop the standings with 1,032.5 intrasquad, miles above my 175. Both had Shak and Barry Hutter (seventh in chips) playing at the final table and stand to win a nice (and free) $85.

Regrouping and shifting strategies

As they say in poker, it’s on to the next one. The freeroll was fun and bringing the DFS concept to the World Series of Poker this fall would also be fun for players in the field and at home.

Several freerolls remain in the USPO and my strategy changes for the next No Limit Hold’em event.

No more recent finishes, no more consistency considerations, no more looking at standings.

This time it’s all about personality. Chatty? Loud? Quick with a joke? Maybe even a little abrasive?

Seeing these traits in high rollers isn’t always easy, but I found a few not afraid of a little table talk. This is the new Team Personality roster:

  • Daniel Negreanu
  • Frank Stepuchin
  • Sean Perry
  • Ray Qartomy
  • Jonathan Little

I can already see those winnings hitting my account. Let’s go.

The US Poker Open continues Friday with a $10,000 Pot Limit Omaha event. Another $1,000 fantasy freeroll is also available.

WPT Deals in New Season With Release of 2021 Dates; 7 Live Events Return Including Bellagio

With live poker returning to normal, the World Poker Tour officially released its schedule of 2021 events on Wednesday. Players will find seven live events in the tour’s 19th season with several North America-based events returning to the schedule.

Following a record-breaking Season XVIII, the new live campaign kicks off with the WPT Seminole Hard Rock Tampa from June 18-22. The new event is one of three events held in Florida in 2021 with two events also heading to Las Vegas.

The extended Season XVIII included several massive turnouts in some of the tour’s final events earlier this year. Tour officials are hoping that signals even more interest in returning to the live tournament felt.

“As we emerge from restrictions throughout North America,” CEO Adam Pliska said in a news release, “we have bolstered the momentum from last season’s historic numbers and are eager to meet the great demand for WPT events leading up to our twenty-year anniversary in 2022.”

A look at the WPT schedule

After the Tampa stop, the tour heads to Las Vegas for the WPT Venetian from July 2-7. With the World Series of Poker moved to the fall, the tour has added some summer dates for players to fill that void. The Venetian also hosts a WPTDeepStacks event from July 9-13.

Next up is a stop in Oklahoma with the WPT Choctaw running July 23-27. The bestbet Scramble closes out the summer action in Jacksonville, Florida, from Aug. 27-31. That event remains a favorite as the venue adds several bounties on players in the field.

As fall rolls around, the action shifts to the East Coast for WPT Maryland at Live! Casino from Sept. 24-28. Players will then find a two-month break as the WSOP plays out in Las Vegas from Sept. 30 to Nov. 23. This allows WPT players to get in both series’ major events.

Back to the WPT action

The Seminole Hard Rock Poker Showdown closed out Season XVIII in May and exemplifies the demand for live poker. That event became the largest WPT Main Tour field in history with 2,482 entries and a $7.9 million prize pool. Intensive care unit nurse Brek Schutten claimed the title for $1.3 million.

In Season XIX, the action returns to the Seminole for the Rock ‘N’ Roll Poker Open from Nov. 26-30. The last event set a record for this tournament as well with 988 entries.

The WPT Five Diamond World Poker Classic closes out 2021 at Bellagio in Las Vegas from Dec.15-19. This event has become the Super Bowl of the WPT, setting attendance records for each of the last five seasons.

The Five Diamond remains a hallmark on the tour calendar dating back to the first season. Some of the biggest names in poker have won this event including Antonio Esfandiari, Daniel Negreanu, Gus Hansen, Joe Hachem, Eugene Katchalov, and others.

The last Five Diamond was held in 2019 with Alex Foxen topping a field of 1,035 entries to score $1.6 million.

“Live poker is back at full strength on the World Poker Tour and we are ecstatic to once again be able to provide a full and exciting schedule of events for our players,” WPT Vice President of Global Tour Management Angelica Hael said.

“We want to sincerely thank the players and global casino partners for their unwavering support during a challenging year and look forward to showcasing some of the best casino properties in North America.”

The new season actually kicked off on partypoker in May with the WPT Online Series. The championship event wrapped up on Tuesday with Christian Rudolph to become the first champion of Season XIX.

Rudolph topped a field of 1,065 for $487,443 in an event that saw a $3.2 million prize pool.

Winners from May’s WSOP Online Circuit events

The Caesars Atlantic City Online Circuit shipped 12 championship rings in May. Online grinders continue to come out in droves trying to score some.

Anthony “Flawlessbink” Maio earned his third ring in the $525 Monster Stack for $36,231. Romain “terrrr1”

Daniel Buzgon recently scored his eighth WSOP Circuit ring.

Lotti took down the $300 Knockout Freezeout to take home his second ring and $14,711.

Also, Daniel “stayactive” Chan won ring number four after scoring $23,187 in the $300 Monster Stack. Stanley “stanman420” Lee added his second ring and $22,240 after taking down the $320 Double Stack.

On the year-long circuit leaderboard, New Jersey’s Daniel “juice” Buzgon remains king of the mountain. He scored his eighth ring in the $500 Big PLO event for $12,936.

Buzgon has some competition in New Jersey lately as Ryan “WHOSYOURDODD” Dodd shows he isn’t a one-hit wonder. Dodd scored rings in back-to-back months.

He took down the $2,000 High Roller on May 25 for $51,267. Back in April Dodd padded his bankroll when he took down the $320 Main Event for $51,300

“I never won a high roller before so it was nice to get two wins in only three days,” Dodd told USPoker.

Dodd also won an event a day earlier on Borgata Poker. USPoker recently caught up with Dodd about his current heater.

The WSOP.com July Summer Circuit is next on dock for the WSOPC. Players can expect 12 ring events running July 16-27.

World Series officials announced in April that the annual live series would be played in the fall this year in Las Vegas. The series runs Sept. 30 to Nov. 23 with a schedule expected to be released this summer.
