Online Poker Gives Canadian Twitch Streamer Deborah ‘QueenBee’ Vanneste A Buzz

Deborah "QueenBee" Vanneste discovered online poker while recovering from an injury in the Canadian Naval Reserves. Twitch streaming has now become a passion.

Injuries can come with major setbacks. But for Deborah Vanneste, an injury ended up changing her life. Vanneste was on leave from the Canadian Naval Reserves recovering from an injury and decided to give online poker a shot to pass the time.

“I deposited onto PokerStars to Celebrate New Year’s that year,” says Vanneste, who lives on Prince Edward Island, Canada. “In my first week playing online poker I won a seat to the Vanessa Rousso boot camp and the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure tournament.”

On that trip, Vanneste was introduced to poker legends like Daniel Negreanu, Vanessa Selbst, and Bertrand “ Elky” Grospellier. She was hooked by the poker experience.

Meet the QueenBee

If her name doesn’t sound familiar, then “QueenBeePoker” might ring a bell. She’s a Twitch poker streamer on and has almost 7,000 followers.

Vanneste plays poker online weekly and started streaming poker after seeing Jaime Staples on Twitch.

“I thought there would be a good opportunity for streaming some low stakes at the same time representing women in poker,” she says.

Streaming brought some luck to her early on in the game. On just her second live stream, Vanneste won a PokerStars MicroMillions title live on Twitch.

The QueenBee currently has over $150,000 in online tournament cashes, including two titles in the recent MicroMillions.

Staying a busy bee

Vanneste currently considers poker a hobby, not a profession. Besides being a mom and a poker player, she has a day job and is pursuing some educational goals.

“I currently work full time with Veterans Affairs,” she says. “I am back at university at the moment, pursuing my bachelor’s of business and public administration degrees.”

The QueenBee feels like her stream stands out because she isn’t the typical Twitch streamer.

“I think representing women in poker sets me a bit apart, especially being mature,” she says. “Also the diversity of games I play, I love adding some mixed games and PLO into the lineup.”

While she plays mostly online, Vanneste would like to play more in a live setting. She has achieved some success at brick and mortar casinos however.

In 2017, she was able to attend the Run It Up Reno IV, hosted by Jason Somerville. The QueenBee won a PokerStars satellite for only $27 and punched her ticket to the event.

At the series she secured some nice cashes and a win as well. She took the top spot in a $125 Triple Stud Six-Max event for $2,625. She also notched two more cashes.

“Getting to play with Jason Somerville was a dream,” she says. “Also bluffing him, showing the bluff, and going on to win felt pretty good too!”

Travel in Canada has been restricted during the COVID-19 pandemic. Vanneste feels the positive side of this situation is that it’s created a mini online poker boom in the country. She still wants to play live and plans on traveling when it’s safe to do so.

“I want to incorporate a trip to Vegas once per year for the World Series of Poker as I have never been yet,” she says.

Vanneste wants that schedule to start soon. The Queen hopes to add some gold.

WSOP Weekly: Brazilian Players Scoring Big With Three Bracelets, Polish Players Snag Two

The first week is in the books after GGPoker kicked off the World Series of Poker Online international bracelet hunt on Aug. 1. Players from all over the globe are competing to capture some gold.

The site offers 33 bracelet events from Aug 1 to Sept 12. This is the second year GG has hosted WSOP events online.

International online bracelet events launched last year since players couldn’t travel to Las Vegas for the live series due to COVID. So far, Brazilian and Polish players are scoring big.

Event 1: $50 “The Return” $1 Million Guaranteed (Aug. 1)

Bartlomiej “Chester20o” Swieboda, of Poland, took down the first event of the series. He scored his first bracelet and $161,111.

Vietnam’s Cuong “CLVT” Trinh finished runner-up for $120,810. Swieboda had to overcome long odds as the entry pool quickly grew.

The massive field saw 30,810 entries for the two-day event that [produced a prize pool of over $1.4 million.

Event 2: $1,111 Caesars Care Charity Tournament (Aug. 3)

On Tuesday, GGPoker hosted a charity event which awarded a bracelet to Joao Simao of Brazil. Simao won his first bracelet and $206,075 for his efforts.

Norway’s Espen “_sennj_” Sandvik finished runner-up but still took hime $154,533. The field had 1,584 entries and generated a prize pool of over $1.7 million. The event also raised $175,824 for the charity.

“Caesars Cares is an assistance fund established to support team members at the company’s properties across the US,” the organization’s website notes. “It will provide individual grants to the US-based Caesars team members who suffer unanticipated hardships, including during the closure of Caesars properties as a result of the public health emergency involving COVID-19.”

Event 3: $2,500 NLHE Championship (Aug. 3)

Malta player Nicolo Molinelli scored his second bracelet and $88,461 on Wednesday in this event. Molinelli topped Brazil’s Renan Bruschi heads up for the title. Bruschi still grabbed $66,336 for his efforts.

GGPoker ambassador Daniel Negreanu found a min-cash of $4,063 in the event. Fans have been able to watch the action live as Negreanu has been streaming the events almost nightly.

Event 4: $800 Double Chance (Aug. 5)

Players started with 40,000 in chips in Thursday’s event as 1,643 players entered the field. The prize pool swelled to $1.2 million in this two-day event.

After two days of play, Brazil’s Thiago “INeedWasabi” Macedo took home first prize for a cash of $161,637. Macedo defeated Andreas “Duckzzz” Nasman in a heads up battle. Nasman won $121,209 for his efforts.

Event 5: $315 Bounty Deepstack (Aug. 7)

Over the weekend, Poland’s Kacper Pyzara scored a bracelet in this event. He won $43,504 in bounties and $36,285 in prize money for a total of $79,789.

Evgeny “pro_nl” Kochubey, of Russia, finished runner-up. The player field topped out at 2,001 entries and a prizepool of $89,700 with $75 from each entry going toward bounties.

Pyzara live streamed the final table on his Twitch channel.

Event 6: $200 Flip & Go (Aug. 8)

Georgios Sotiropoulous, of Greece, locked up his second bracelet after taking down the $200 Flip & Go on Aug. 8. He scored $117,022 after defeating a player field of 6,638 entries.

This included defeating two-time bracelet winner Chris Moorman at the final table.

What Is a Flip & Go?

A Flip & Go format offers a unique way to earn a bracelet. This year’s live WSOP will offer a version of these tournaments on Aug. 8.

This hybrid-style event features luck, skill, and a version of pineapple poker. The game plays as follows:

To start the tournament, each player gets three cards preflop.
After the flop each player must muck one card.
Every player is then forced all in.
One table winner moves on, the rest are eliminated.
The remaining players play out the tournament as a normal No Limit Hold’em event.

Event 7: $1,500 Millionaire Maker (Aug. 8)

Brazil scored the country’s third bracelet of the series after Eduardo Pires took down this big-field WSOP favorite. Pires defeated 5,437 entries to win $1.3 million.

Pires defeated Lukas “rustyhusky” Hafner, of Austria, heads up for the victory. Hafner almost scored a million bucks ($984,469) as well for second place.

Pires defeated some heavy competition including Tomas Jozonis at the final table.

GGPoker Releases WSOP Online Bracelet Series Schedule; $45 Million Guaranteed, 33 Events

Top pros will be mixing it up with recreational players from around the world this summer at GGPoker. The company announced the schedule for the 33 gold bracelets up for grabs this August on the international side of the World Series of Poker Online.

The series runs Aug. 1 to Sept. 12 and offers players $45 million in guaranteed prize pools.

“After making history last year, WSOP Online opens up to the international poker community again this August and September,” GG ambassador Daniel Negreanu said in a press release. “I’m ready to join tens of thousands of poker players from all over the world at the tables, all of us aiming to take down one of those 33 gold bracelets.”

What to expect from the GGPoker WSOP Online

This year GGPoker is offering even more action than 2020 and expects huge online fields. Among the events listed is a $5,000 Main Event with a $20 million guarantee.

Day 1 starts Aug. 22 and each flight is a freezeout event and players can play up to three flights. Beyond winning a bracelet, the winner of the Main Event is also awarded some bonuses from GGPoker including:

Last year’s Main Event prize pool reached $27.5 million, the largest amount for a single online poker tournament. That distinction earned GG a recognition from the Guinness World of Records.

The WSOP Online is currently underway at WSOP.com in the United States in New Jersey and Nevada. The series then shifts internationally for August. WSOP.com also recently launched in Pennsylvania in the US and is planning an eight-event bracelet schedule there as well.

As part of the GG series, poker fans can expect plenty of poker action at GGPoker.tv, the site’s official streaming channel. The company has recruited some big names to call the action.

Regular WSOP broadcasters Norman Chad and Lon McEachern will share the commentating duties on a few big events. Those tournaments include:

Heads-up Championship (Event 15, Aug. 26 and 28)
WSOP Online Main Event (Event 27, Sept. 9 and 11)

Along with the online action, the WSOP is preparing for live bracelet events to take place in Las Vegas this fall. The company also recently announced the return of the WSOP Europe this fall.

WSOP Europe Bracelets Are Back – Official Schedule Released; International Circuit Also Returns

Following its successful debut on the Las Vegas Strip, the World Series of Poker has released the international schedule for 2022-23.

World Series of Poker organizers officially announced the return of the WSOP Europe on Monday. The series runs Nov. 19 to Dec. 8 at King’s Casino Resort in Rozvadov, Czech Republic, just after the WSOP wraps up in Las Vegas.

The series features €11.5 million in guaranteed prizes and 15 WSOP gold bracelets up for grabs. The €10,350 Main Event caps the series Dec 3-8 and comes with a €5 million guarantee.

Along with the WSOP Europe, King’s will also host a WSOP International Circuit series in August and September. That schedule was also released on Monday.

Highlights from the WSOP Europe

The return of WSOP Europe events helps usher in at least the beginning of the return of live poker in Europe. The series includes 15 events with buy-ins from €350 to €2 million. Some of the highlights include:

$1,350 Mini NLHE Main Event (Event 3, Nov 21-25) – €600,000 guaranteed
$2,000 Pot Limit Omaha (Event 4, Nov 24-25) – €200,000 guaranteed

WSOP Circuit International announced

Along with the European WSOP, the International Circuit also returns Aug 12 – Sept 14 at King’s Casino Resort. The property hosts 17 championship ring events.

The festival will have more than €3.5 million in guaranteed prizes with buy-ins ranging from €200 to €3000. The €1,700 Main Event runs Sept 10-14 with a €1 million guarantee. Other highlighted circuit events include:

Small Buy-ins, Big Payouts in PokerStars MicroMillions Series; Total of Almost $9M Guaranteed

PokerStars kicks off the MicroMillions series in July for players on the international platform as well as in Southern Europe and Italy.

PokerStars kicks off the popular MicroMillions series July 15-25 for online poker players on the international platform. The site will be offering $4.7 million in guaranteed prize pools across 122 events.

Buy-ins range from $1.10 to $22, so tournaments are affordable for players of every bankroll. The $22 Main Event is set for July 25 with a $1 million dollar guarantee. That offers a huge payout for such a small buy-in.

The series also runs in Southern Europe and Italy with $8.9 guaranteed across the three platforms.

Inside the PokerStars MicroMillions

Players will find numerous options when jumping into the MicroMillions events. PokerStars is mixing it up by offering No Limit Hold’em, Pot Limit Omaha (PLO), and some less frequently spread forms of poker.

Those include Limit Holdem, 2-7 Single Draw, Five-Card PLO, Pot Limit Courchevel, Razz, Badugi, Five Card Draw, Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo, HORSE, and Eight-Game Mix.

MicroMillions satellites and freerolls

Players can get in the MicroMillions action by winning a satellite via PokerStars popular Spin & Go’s. Grinders can win Main Event seats starting at just $0.50.

Three freerolls are also planned on July 14, 17, and 24 awarding $200,000 in MicroMillions tickets. Players can visit PokerStars’ Twitter and Twitch channels to find special passwords.

MicroMillions also comes to Southern Europe and Italy

Along with the international platform, MicroMillions also heads to PokerStars Southern Europe and Italy from July 18 to Aug. 1.

PokerStars players in France, Spain, and Portugal can play for more than €3 million in guaranteed prizes across 174 events. PokerStars also hosts a €50 Progressive Knockout Main Event on Aug. 1 featuring a €250,000 guarantee.

PKOs are a special type of bounty tournament. When a player eliminates an opponent, that player cashes in 50% of the opponent’s bounty. Those funds go directly into the winning player’s own account.

The other half of that bounty is added to the bounty on the winning player’s head. Every knockout the player wins, the larger the price becomes on his own head. As the tournament progresses, players earn bigger bounties for knocking out opponents

During the same time, PokerStars Italy will host its MicroMillions series with €1.2 million guaranteed among 90 events. The €50 Main Event is planned for Aug. 1 and comes with a €150,000 guarantee. Here’s a look at the complete Southern Europe and Italian schedules:

Ba Da Bing: Nick Binger Talks Solvers, Poker Strategy, and Becoming a Better Player

LearnWPT lead instructor recently spoke with PokerScout about solvers, strategy, and some of his current projects.

The poker film The Cincinnati Kid features a quick scene where the main character is preparing for the big game. Steve McQueen’s character Eric Stoner is studying a handwritten statistical chart and packs it in his bag.

Advanced knowledge like this was held close to the vest among top players of the time. However, today information, data, and charts flow freely online. There are countless YouTube videos, articles, and books to help poker players better their skills.

Poker strategies are constantly changing as the game continues to evolve. Top players currently use programs called “solvers” to help figure out the best optimal outcomes when in certain difficult spots.

Poker pro Nick Binger knows the ins and outs of solvers and the evolution of poker strategy firsthand. He’s currently the lead instructor at LearnWPT, the official training site of the World Poker Tour. Binger recently spoke with PokerScout about solvers, strategy, and some of his current projects.

Learning the online poker ropes in Europe

A graduate of the University of North Carolina, Binger first jumped into poker while traveling through Europe after college. He began his instruction background by teaching English in a small town in Austria.

However, Binger later needed extra ways to make money after he couldn’t secure a work visa. His brother introduced him to online poker and the game seemed like a nice way to score some funds. Binger found some success and never looked back.

“My brother convinced me that I should get into online poker even though I had never really played poker before, since the boom was just starting,” he says. “This was the end of 2004, so the timing was perfect.”

Since the days of teaching in Austria, Binger has more than $2.3 million in live tournament winnings. This includes multiple final tables and two World Series of Poker bracelets. He’s one of only a handful of players to win a bracelet online and live.

Those early days teaching have served him well. Binger now creates content for LearnWPT, helping to instruct the site’s students.

Growing the world of poker education

LearnWPT works to bring quality training content for online and live players. The subscription-based service offers content to those of all levels.

The platform also partners with the partypoker US Network. Players on the network in New Jersey and Michigan can access exclusive content to work on their skills.

The site sponsored the partypoker Online Series Main Event in NJ on March 28. The final table streamed live on the new LearnWPT Twitch channel.

That included offering strategy advice and commentary from bracelet winners Tony Dunst (also a WPT commentator) and Andrew Lichtenberger. Both also coach at LearnWPT. The training site tries to be a one-stop shop for becoming a better player.

“You can watch strategy episodes from top players, get coaching, play on the WPT GTO Trainer, and can run your own simulations on a solver,” Binger says.

As far as solvers go, Binger puts the GTO Trainer against any on the market.

“Learn WPT has the largest database of solved hands in the world,” he says. “Students can simply play through hands on the trainer and get instant feedback on every decision they make. We’ve done the work of building the game trees, ranges, and processing the solutions for over four billion decision points.”

Binger uses solvers for his own skills and has seen his own gains. These high-tech programs have become a major part of poker education.

“Solvers have absolutely improved my game and the way we teach poker at LearnWPT,” he says. “They allow you to explore strategy at a level not possible before solvers. This is especially true for the concept of range versus range play.”

Perfecting the game via technology

Players have been trying to put opponents “on hands” since the game’s early days. But Binger explains how solvers took a large network of hands and put them into ranges.

“A long time ago, people played poker hand versus hand, meaning they knew their hand and guessed their opponent’s hand, then played accordingly,” he says. “That’s a very basic way to play and will result in you losing to more advanced players.”

All this also applies to online poker players as well. An online rounder can gauge an opponent’s strength by taking into consideration what that player is likely to have.

“After the beginning of the Moneymaker era, the idea of playing your specific hand against an opponent’s range of hands became prevalent among professionals,” Binger says. “This improved play significantly and good players had a significant edge simply by applying this concept.

“After the advent of solvers a few years ago, tough players now consider their range against the range of the other player and how the board interacts with both in every hand they play. This would not have been possible to truly explore without solvers. “

Binger continues to study the game and produce content to help teach up-and-coming players. He considers solvers and GTO as musts for players looking to get to the next level.

“I think learning the concepts and principles that underpin GTO strategy are a must for any serious poker player that wants to win in the long term.“

Geolocation Bug Could Leave Some WSOP Players Out of Action

A geolocation bug may leave some Mac users out of action at WSOP.com.

Players on WSOP.com may want to put that new Macbook purchase or software upgrade on hold. The latest operating system is causing geolocation issues where some players may not be able to play.

Some New Jersey and Nevada residents received an email on Oct. 8 from the WSOP Support Operations Management Team. The message read:

“You have been identified as having accessed WSOP.com from a MAC device within the last 6 months. Please be advised that the release of the latest version of Mac OS, Catalina (10.15) was recently deployed and may affect your accessibility to our platform. If you upgrade or upgraded to Catalina (10.15) you may be unable to be geo-located even if you are located within the jurisdiction that allows online gaming due to a Mac OS bug.”

Mac OS Catalina (10.15), the operating system for Apple desktop and Macbooks, was released Oct. 7. This is the 16th major release for the platform.

What’s the problem affecting poker players?

The geolocation technology issue isn’t just a WSOP.com problem. Other online casinos have reported similar issues.

On Oct. 9, a similar email was sent to NJ customers from Golden Nugget Casino identifying the same bug. Even though the site doesn’t have a poker site, this may affect online casino players. The Golden Nugget noted to customers:

“The market wide geolocation technology partner is currently working as quickly as possible on a fix to work around Apple’s handling of geolocation information through a browser, which abruptly caused this bug to manifest.”

Golden Nugget offered these recommendations for users:

Refrain from updating to Mac OS 10.15 Catalina until the issue can be resolved.
For those who have already updated, the company advised using mobile or Windows OS devices to play.

Those don’t leave a lot of options for NJ players with the software upgrade.

A poorly timed, unexpected frustration

Geolocation allows online betting platforms to make sure a player is within the state. New Jersey, Delaware, and Nevada sites use a company called GeoComply for this service.

Geolocation is similar to GPS that can pinpoint a player’s coordinates using an IP address and nearby wifi signals.

NJ recreational poker player Ross Gottlieb plays on a Mac and is planning accordingly so he can keep playing.

“I’m just not going to do the update for as long as possible,” he said.

The timing is not great for many players. WSOP.com is currently running its Fall Online Poker Championships through Oct. 20. The event features a total of $1 million in guarantees.

Macs make up about 10% of the PC market share. It remains to be seen what effect this bug will have on the series’ player pool.
