WPT Montreal Begins This Week at Partypoker; Mike Sexton Classic Charity Event Closes Series

The WPT Montreal Main Event features a $2 million guarantee.

The month of January brings even more World Poker Tour action to partypoker. The WPT Montral kicks off Jan. 17 and runs through Feb. 1 with numerous six- and seven-figure guarantees.

The newly-released schedule includes a $3,200 Main Event with $2 million guaranteed to kick off the series. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the series has moved online with plenty of action awaiting online poker players around the world.

“The WPT Montreal Online schedule features events for players of all bankrolls,” WPT  Europe Vice President Hermance Blum said in a news release. “Another WPT Champion will be made on partypoker and we are thrilled to, once again, honor the memory of Mike Sexton by bringing the event where he won his WPT title online.”

A complete WPT Montreal Main Event experience

As has been the case with other online WPT partypoker events, players can expect a full tour experience. At least the best that can be expected in an online poker environment.

Some big rewards are in store for the champion. Along with a huge cash prize, the champion earns:

  • a $15,000 seat to the next WPT Tournament of Champions (presented by Baccarat Crystal)
  • a $2,500 Tournament of Champions travel package
  • name engraved on the Mike Sexton WPT Champions Cup
  • a replica of the Sexton Cup
  • points in the Hublot Player of the Year race

To replicate the live poker experience, the Main Event champion will also walk away with a WPT Montreal championship belt. This has become the signature trophy presented by Playground Poker Club, the host venue for the annual live series.

The final table is also expected to be live streamed for poker fans as have previous WPT partypoker events. The first flight of the Main Event begins the series on Jan. 17. A $320 mega satellite scheduled for the same day, awarding at least 50 seats.

The second Main Event flight is set for Jan. 24. That will be followed by two further days of action on Jan. 25 and 26. The final table will then play out on Jan. 27.

There will also be mini and micro versions of the Main Event. The $320 Mini comes with a $200,000 guarantee and the $33 Micro guarantees $30,000.

Some additional WPT Montreal highlights

With 24 events, the WPT Montreal offers something for all player types. A one-day No Limit Hold’em event will be held every night of the series.

The schedule also includes eight high roller events, including the $25,500 Super High Roller with a $1 million guarantee. As in the Main Event, players will also find mini versions of several events. Here’s a look at a few other highlights:

  • $530 Omaha Knockout (Event 2, Jan. 20) – $50,000 guarantee
  • $55 Mini Omaha Knockout (Event 2, Jan. 20) – $15,000 guarantee
  • $1,050 Montreal Masters (Event 7, Jan. 22) – $500,000 guarantee
  • $1,600 Second Chance Turbo (Event 13, Jan. 25) – $100,000 guarantee
  • $162 Six-Max Turbo (Event 16, Jan. 27) – $20,000 guarantee
  • $530 Playground Closer (Event 20, Jan. 29) – $250,000 guarantee

A special addition this year is the $10,300 Mike Sexton Classic, running the final two days of the festival. The tournament features $1 million guaranteed and each $300 registration fee is donated to the Nevada Partnership Homeless Youth (NPHY) charity.

Mike Sexton celebrates after winning the WPT Montreal in 2016.

The group aims to end youth homelessness in southern Nevada and was been chosen specifically by Sexton’s family. Sexton won the WPT Montreal in 2016 for $317,896.

A phased satellite program will feed into the tournament, starting on Jan. 24. Players can buy into phase events for as little as $0.01. This allows players of all bankrolls a chance to land a seat in the tournament. Here’ a look at the complete series:

POKER GYMNASTICS: GGPoker Launches Flip & Go Twist to Traditional Tournaments

GGPoker's Flip & Go's bring unique twists to tournament poker.

With hopes of bringing something new to tournament poker, GGPoker unveiled its latest unique variant this week. The new Flip & Go format is designed to make tournament play more exciting with some innovative twists.

The new events are meant to get players right to the money portion of a tournament.

“If you want to get straight to the hottest action in a tournament, then Flip & Go is for you,” GGPoker ambassador Daniel Negreanu said in a news release. “Get flipping with a standard stack or super-size your chips from the start – the choice is yours.

“There are extra stacks on offer during the flipout and a standard game gets underway once you’re in the money.”

How do Flip & Go tournaments work?

Flip & Go tournaments allow players to purchase extra buy-ins at registration. They then sit down with up to 10 times the default starting chip stack.

Once underway, Flip & Go’s kick off with a fast-paced “flipout” phase in which participants are dealt three hole cards. They then must discard one before hands are completed.

Bonus chips are added to the stacks of those dealt certain three-card poker hands, such as straights and flushes.

The flipout phase ends when every table has played down to a single winner. Each of these is then guaranteed a prize. The rest of the Flip & Go is then played out in a standard Texas Hold’em tournament format.

Flip & Go buy-ins start from just $0.01 and tournaments are scheduled every 30 minutes.

GGCare continues helping with bad luck

This new tournament joins another unique GG January promotion called GGCare. This program allows cash game players a chance at overcoming some bad luck.

The site utilizes an algorithm to recognize those who receive a tough cooler or suckout. These players are automatically registered to a daily $30,000 Flipout tournament.

That promotion runs throughout January.

BRANCHING OUT: YouTube Star ‘True Geordie’ Brings His Game to PokerStars in Ambassador Role

PokerStars ambassador True Geordie at the poker table..

PokerStars continues adding to its ambassador lineup with some players appealing to wider audiences. After recently announcing a deal with soccer star Neymar, the site has also added English YouTuber Brian “True Geordie” Davis.

True Geordie is no stranger to poker and the game has been a regular focus of his channel. The new deal follows a trend of adding ambassadors not seen as traditional poker pros.

Davis has almost 2 million subscribers on YouTube and 113,000 on Twitch. Those platforms are a major part of his role with the company as he charts his progress improving his skills.

“I’m delighted to bring a massive passion of mine to my audience,” he said in a news release. “People who know me well know that I give 100% to anything I enjoy and poker is no different. I’ve even drafted in some experts to train me up with the hope that one day I might be able to face the best in the game.”

Growing his presence with PokerStars

Adding True Geordie gives PokerStars a social media star who has a deep connection with his audience. Along with poker, Davis also streams about his love of soccer, mixed martial arts, and other topics.

That mix has the potential to bring new players into the PokerStars universe. Playing at the site won’t be a new experience for Davis and he’s partnered with PokerStars in the past. That included playing in the Stadium Series over the summer.

As part of that promotion, True Geordie played against other well-known YouTubers. He also participated in the Stars Call for Action COVID relief event.

Reaching a wide audience

Davis now joins the PokerStars fold with content geared toward poker fans and his regular viewers alike. Fans can follow his journey to improve his poker skills.

The ultimate goal is to transition from a recreational player to a professional with viewers along for the ride.

“PokerStars are the best at what they do and becoming a member of the team really is a proud moment for me,” Davis said. “I have to say a big thank you to PokerStars, who are ahead of the game in supporting digital creators and their content.”

As part of his new ambassador announcement, Geordie released a short film last week. The Showdown documents a cash game between Davis and some friends.

Fans can look forward to live streams of True Geordie playing home games and freerolls. They’ll have a shot to even get in on the action and play along with him.

“Over the next twelve months,” he said, “I hope to improve my game, play with my audience and against some of the best players in the world to show just how entertaining, fun and mentally challenging poker can be.”

COOLER CONTROL: Unique GGPoker Promotion Pays Back Players Experiencing Bad Luck

GGPoker has launched a new promotion to help players experiencing some bad luck.

Bad beats – be gone. That’s the message GGPoker is sending to start the new year.

The site launched a new integrated promotion on Jan. 1 called GGCare and hopes to ease the pain of coolers and suckouts. Cash game players experiencing these types of poker disasters are rewarded as part of the program.

GG will be tracking cash game hands throughout January. Players who experience bad beats are registered automatically to a daily $30,000 Flipout tournament.

We’ve all experienced the pain of bad beats. It’s part of the game,” GGPoker ambassador Daniel Negreanu said in a news release. “But GGPoker has your back. With GGCare, you can suffer the worst bad beat, and still come out ahead.

How does GGCare work?

After earning a tournament ticket , each “unlucky” player receives an entry for the following day. There are a few interesting wrinkles to the promotion.

When the Flipout tournament starts, players will be awarded different starting chip stacks depending on how unlucky they were. A custom data algorithm will determine each player’s chips – meaning the bigger the bad beat, the more a player has in the tournament.

The conditions that trigger eligible bad beats, coolers, or suckouts vary by game. The company plans to continuously optimize the GGCare system.

In the coming weeks, GG will add new trigger points to expand eligibility. That should reward even more players that find themselves in unlucky situations.

GGCare tries to channel rewards to players that might need them the most. The promotion brings something a bit different than the traditional online poker tournament reward.

Most sites normally reward similar freeroll entries to cash game players based solely on volume. Company promotions staff members have high hopes for GGCare and will monitor how players receive the program.

Partypoker KO Series Making Holiday Season a Knockout

The partypoker KO Series begins Dec. 25 and runs through Jan. 16.

There are some extra reasons for online poker players to party this holiday season. Partypoker has launched a new KO Series just in time for Christmas and New Year to kick off 2021.

The festival begins on Christmas Day, Dec. 25, and runs through Jan. 19 with 23 events. The series gives players of all levels a chance at success, with mini and micro versions of all events.

“KO Series of the past have seen us packing the schedule full of quality events at multiple times per day,” partypoker head of poker room management Chris Donnachie said.

“This time around, we wanted to focus less on volume and even more on quality, hence why the number of key events has reduced significantly compared to past editions.”

What’s partypoker have planned for the holidays?

All KO Series tournaments will be played in a progressive knockout (PKO) format. These tournaments are slightly different than typical bounty tournaments.

In a PKO, a player eliminating another player only receives a portion of that player’s bounty. The other portion is added to the winning player’s bounty.

That can make for some big knockout totals later in the tournament. PKOs are a fun twist to a typical bounty tournament.

Partypoker officials have also worked to make this series even more popular with recreational players.

“Most events are scheduled to play in multi-day or multi-flight formats, which allows us to offer better structures but with the added advantage of player-friendly earlier finishing times,” Donnachie said.

“Re-entries have also been limited to a maximum of one on most events, which is in line with our continued efforts to level the playing field.”

A look at the KO Series highlights

Players will have plenty of options when it comes to the KO Series with buy-ins ranging from $2 to $2,000. Players can end Christmas Day with any of three versions of the Christmas Opener.

The $215 high buy-in features a $250,000 guarantee. Those with lower bankrolls will find buy-ins of $2.20 and $22 for the micro and mini versions.

The New Year Kick Off on Jan. 1 also offers a nice way to start off 2021 in style. The $320 high edition comes with a $300,000 guarantee. There are also $3.30 and $33 micro and mini versions.

The $1,050 Main Event will be a three-day tournament and will begin on Jan. 16 with a $1 million guarantee. The event crowns a champion on the final day of the festival.

There will also be mini and micro editions of the tournament and here’s a look at the complete schedule.

Many chances to qualify at lower buy-ins

There are numerous opportunities for players to get in the KO action for a bargain price. Phase events begin Dec. 23 offering a chance to qualify for larger events with buy-ins as low as $0.50.

Special KO Series SPINS will also run throughout the series, rewarding winners with tournament tickets. A player in a $10 SPIN tournament has a chance for a ticket valued as high as $2,100. Players can also buy into satellite events for as little as $1.10.

After the gifts are unwrapped and the festivities come to a conclusion, some holiday poker may be on tap for many. The KO Series offers a nice way to ring in the new year.

Irish Open Online Returns to Partypoker in March; Will Kassouf Scores Main Event Title

The Irish Open Online is coming to partypoker in March.

The Irish Open Online returns in March following the success of the inaugural edition earlier in 2020, partypoker announced last week. A familiar name also rose to the top in the Irish Poker Masters Online, which wrapped up on Dec. 18.

Will Kassouf, known for his “speech play” during his deep run in the 2016 World Series of Poker Main Event, turned a satellite entry into a Irish Open Main Event championship. Players now won’t have to wait too long to get back in the Irish poker action.

What to expect from the 2021 Irish Open Online at partypoker?

The next Irish Open Online begins March 29 and features a Main Event with a €1 million guarantee. The recent Irish Poker Masters featured 21 events with several event variations including Pot Limit Omaha, PKO, heads-up, turbo, and more.

Players can probably expect similar events. With an online poker boom underway, that schedule may even be expanded.

The 2020 live series paid out €5.6 million with Brazil’s Pablo Brito Silva claiming the Main Event title for €462,100. He topped a field of 2,945 and was one of 22 champions in the series.

Partypoker and Irish Poker Open organizers are currently looking into potential alternative dates to host the live festival in 2021. The festival is Europe’s longest-running poker series.

“We all miss live poker action and we are looking forward to the time when all of us can experience the buzz and the thrill of the Irish Poker Open in a live setting,” partypoker marketing director Vadim Soloveychik said.

“Meanwhile, we are excited about the opportunity to once again host the Irish Open Online in the coming spring and we hope Irish Poker Open fans will enjoy it.”

Will Kassouf turns €109 satellite into Irish Poker Masters Main Event title

In taking the December Irish Masters Main Event title, Kassouf outlasted 1,340 opponents in the €1,100 buy-in tournament. The British poker star won his seat via a €109 satellite and turned that into €215,163.

Manuel Ruivo finished runner-up for €148,042 and also recently found big success in the WSOP Main Event at GGPoker. He finished third in the GG half of that event for $728,177.

When heads-up play commenced, Ruivo held a massive chip lead over Kassouf – 213,940,000 to 54,260. Kassouf managed to draw level, however, and the two battled back and forth before he claimed the title.

It was an unlikely finish as Kassouf began the day as one of the short stacks.

Other big names score in High Roller

The €2,100 High Roller attracted quite a few major names to the player pool. Dominik Nitsche, Evaldas Aniulis, Jans Arends, and Vlad Lache all cashed in the event.

The UK’s Jonathan Proudfoot beat Elio Fox heads-up to claim first prize of €40,206

Team partypoker’s Kristen Bicknell took third for €16,297. The event attracted a field of 67 players.

Players can spin partypoker’s Christmas Wheel throughout December

Partypoker is giving away plenty of gifts this holiday season. Players have the chance to win up to $500 every day with the launch of Christmas Wheel promotion.

Prizes include cash bonuses and freeroll tickets, which are awarded every day until Dec. 31. Players earn one point per day by playing any:

  • SPINS game
  • cash game
  • fastforward cash game

Earning just one point allows players to head to the Christmas Wheel. The wheel can be found under “promotions” in the desktop client or via the “offers” section on mobile.

The two daily freerolls feature prize pools of $1,000 and $2,000. Players will find plenty of opportunities to brighten up the season even more.
