Online poker players around the world can fight it out online next month in the Battle of Malta at GGPoker. Despite some live tournaments returning, the popular series has shifted online this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Last week, GGPoker and Battle of Malta organizers announced the shift in venue for 2020. The series runs Nov. 1-22 and a full schedule is expected soon.
“It is with a heavy heart that Casino Malta had to postpone the much-awaited Battle of Malta live event, but we’re elated to partner with such a prestigious brand as GGPoker,” Casino Malta general manager Slawomir Świtalski said in a news release. “We look forward to seeing everyone in Malta in 2021 for a very special Battle of Malta.”
GGPoker adds another big poker brand with Battle of Malta
The Battle of Malta debuted in 2012 and is one of the most popular standalone live poker events in Europe. The award-winning festival has smashed records eight years in a row.
Last year’s series featured 35 events over seven days with more than 13,000 entries. The annual series is held in Eden Arena in St. Julian’s, Malta.
Designed for low- to mid-stakes players, the Battle of Malta is one of Europe’s biggest poker events. Last year’s Main Event attracted 4,657 entries and generated a €2.3 million prize pool.
Along with poker, organizers try to highlight the beautiful and historic island. While there won’t be any trips to the beach this year, there will still be plenty of poker and fun.
“I’m genuinely excited to announce that the Battle of Malta 2020 will be hosted at GGPoker,” said John Scanlon, the site’s director of live events and sponsorships.
“It’s an honor to be unveiled as the organizers’ preferred online partner, and I’m confident that this year’s Battle of Malta will be bigger and better than ever.”
