Can the best training poker sites really make you a better player? Yes, they absolutely can, but only if you use the right resources. I’ve been honing my skills for over a decade, and in that time I’ve used a lot of training sites. Here’s everything I know about online poker training and how to improve as a player.

What are the best online poker training sites right now? I’ve used plenty of sites in my time, but here’s why PokerCoaching.com and Elite University are two of my favorites:

1. PokerCoaching.com

PokerCoaching.com is one of the best poker training sites I’ve tried in recent years for a few reasons. The free eBooks and GTO are ideal for newbies trying to get ahead of the curve without spending a cent. I also like the quizzes and interactive elements of this poker training site.

For me, however, the reason PokerCoaching.com stands out is its tournament content. Founder Jonathan Little was a big-name MTT player during the poker boom, and a lot of the site’s poker training videos are geared toward tournament strategy.

That doesn’t mean it’s lacking cash game content. Indeed, there are more than 200 videos on the site, as well as a Discord server with more than 12,500 members. However, if I’m honest, there are better online poker training sites for cash game content.

The final reason PokerCoaching.com deserves a mention is the fact it gives all members access to exclusive freerolls on CoinPoker. These $2,000 tournaments are free to enter, which makes them the ideal events to test your new skills.

2. Elite University

If PokerCoaching.com is my go-to poker tournament training site, Elite University is where I enjoy learning more about cash games.

Founded by British high-stakes pro Charlie Carrel, this poker training site is all about holistic content. By that, I mean Carrel likes to cover a variety of topics, including the psychological aspects of poker.

That’s something very few poker training sites focus on, so that in itself is a selling point. It also ties in with Carrel’s approach to poker, which is based on exploiting an opponent’s tendencies rather than GTO-optimal lines.

For these reasons, I recommend Elite University to cash game players who prefer the human side of poker. Of course, this doesn’t mean you can’t get a solid grounding in the mathematics of poker from Elite University. However, if you want to come at strategy concepts from a slightly different angle, I recommend some of the courses on Elite University, including the mindset masterclass.

Poker Training Software

Poker training sites aren’t the only tools you should have in your arsenal. As well as watching videos and chatting with fellow players, I recommend using the latest poker training software. Some of the top tools are:

PokerTracker

This poker training app has been around since 2014 and remains a staple for all online players. Put simply, PokerTracker records all of the hands you play and stores them in a database so you can review them using a series of inbuilt tools. PokerTracker also offers a live Heads-Up Display (HUD) so you can see an opponent’s statistics in real time.

Holdem Manager

Serious poker players use Holdem Manager if they don’t use PokerTracker. For all intents and purposes, Holdem Manager offers the same tools as PokerTracker. Personally, I use Holdem Manager because I prefer the design and layout. I also think the hand visualizer and HUD are easier to use.

Poker CoPilot

I recommend Poker CoPilot if you want an alternative to PokerTracker and Holdem Manager. The tracker updates in real-time and uses data from other users to highlight possible leaks in your game. The HUD gives you the option to track up to 60 metrics, including VPIP, PFR, and Agg.

You can also turn on the HUD’s advanced tracking features and get statistics for each street. This level of detail can help you make better decisions in tough spots because you’re getting data on specific spots rather than an opponent’s general playing style.

GTO Wizard

This is the ultimate poker training app for Game Theory Optimal (GTO) strategy. The premise is simple: enter some hand details, and GTO Wizard will run through the possible permutations and give you the best move. As well as entering your own hands, GTO Wizard has more than 10 million pre-solved solutions you can review.

PioSolver

Other than GTO Wizard, PioSolver is the app that gets a lot of love from pros. One of PioSolver’s major selling points is the fact that it’s easier to use than other poker solvers. The interface is basic.

In fact, it looks so basic that you’d be forgiven for thinking it couldn’t solve a Rubik’s Cube, let alone the many possible lines you can take in a poker hand. The reality, however, is that PioSolver is extremely powerful, even though other poker solvers have more features. That being said, you can still get preflop, flop, turn, and river GTO solutions for Hold’em within a few clicks.

RangeConverter

The advanced poker training app is for anyone who wants to master GTO strategy. I love the fact you can access a variety of free poker training resources via the RangeConverter website, including charts. Those who pay monthly get access to heads-up GTO range training software for an ever-increasing number of situations. Basically, the more expensive the package, the more preflop and post-flop situations you get GTO solutions for. Something else that’s neat about RangeConverter is that it connects to other popular poker training apps, including PioSolver.

Poker Academy

Poker Academy contains a variety of powerful tools. The preflop charts are great for intermediate players wanting to tighten up their opening ranges. For more advanced poker training, this app has an AI cloud-based solver that allows you to analyze hands from a variety of angles by using up to seven different bet sizes. Finally, you can use the poker simulator to run through scenarios and get real-time feedback on up to four tables at once.

PokerSnowie

PokerSnowie is what I call a next-generation poker training app. It combines the power of a poker tracker with a GTO solver to create a comprehensive training tool. There are a lot of things to like about PokerSnowie, including the fact that you can input hands and get feedback on where you went wrong. However, for me, its defining feature is a poker training game. Basically, you get to play against AI bots and get real-time advice on errors you’ve made. It’s like playing with a pro watching you, except there’s no money on the line.

There are hundreds of online poker training courses out there, which means there’s something for everyone. Based on my experience, the following three courses offer clear and effective advice for players at each stage of their journey:

Poker Tournament Course: Hero’s Journey on PokerCoaching.com

I’ll talk more about it later, but one of the main benefits of watching poker training videos is that you live vicariously through someone else. That means you get to see their wins, losses, and moments of realization without risking your own money.

Poker Tournament Course: Range Analysis on Elite University

This course teaches you what ranges are and how to define an opponent’s range. From there, you’ll learn how to reduce an opponent’s range as hands progress and how to exploit players based on their perceived ranges.

You need to know how to construct and deconstruct ranges in poker variants and at every level. By this, I mean you need to know what ranges work from different positions and, in turn, how to put opponents on ranges. The Range Analysis mini-series on Elite University is an excellent resource in this regard.

As well as giving you tips on how to construct ranges that work well from a variety of positions and against a variety of opponents. You’ll also learn how to analyze your opponent’s ranges so you can read situations more effectively and make better decisions. Once you start to get more comfortable with these techniques you can test them out on some of the best offshore poker sites. 

Poker Tournament Course: Mindset Masterclass on Elite University

Is There Free Online Poker Training?

Search for “poker training free resources,” and Google will return hundreds of results. Some of these free poker training resources will be worth using, but a lot of them won’t be. I’m not saying you shouldn’t use free poker training articles and videos. I used plenty of freebies when I first started playing.

However, there’s an old saying that you get what you pay for, and it holds true for online poker training. Therefore, I’d urge caution when it comes to free resources. I’ve already given you some ideas of where to find the best free online poker training resources, but here’s a quick recap:

What I will say, however, is that online poker training schools are great for newbies. Once you’ve got some experience, it’s OK to dip in and out. However, if you’re a beginner, I recommend watching as many poker training videos as possible until you’ve mastered the fundamentals.
