PokerStars COOP Series Kicks Off This Weekend in Ontario, Canada; $2M Guaranteed

The inaugural Ontario Championship of Online Poker runs Oct. 1-17 at PokerStars with 132 tournaments and an overall guarantee of $2 million.

The Championship of Online Poker has become one of the most recognized tournament brands in online poker. PokerStars is now bringing a COOP series to players in the Canadian province of Ontario this fall.

The inaugural Ontario Championship of Online Poker (ONCOOP) kicks off on Saturday with 17 days of action. The entire series runs from Oct. 1-17 with 132 tournaments and an overall guarantee of $2 million. ONCOOP becomes the largest and richest PokerStars series in Ontario yet.

What to expect from PokerStars ONCOOP

The series brings some major online tournament action to Ontario, which underwent provincial regulation earlier this year. PokerStars launched in June and is now ramping up a COOP festival for Ontario players.

The series offers something for every bankroll and interest. ONCOOP features  a range of Low and High buy-in options, allowing players of all types to get involved. Players will find two main events running on Oct. 16.

The $500 No Limit Hold’em High Main Event features a $200,000 guaranteed prize pool. The $50 Low Main Event comes with $40,000 guaranteed.

Other series highlights include:

  • $200 NLHE Kickoff (Oct. 1) – $20,000 guaranteed
  • $1,000 Sunday Special High Roller (Oct. 2) – $70,000 guaranteed
  • $300 Thursday Thrill PKO (Oct. 6) – $32,000 guaranteed
  • $100 NLHE PKO (Oct. 14) – $18,000 guaranteed

Growing the Ontario platform

Following the launch of PokerStars in Ontario, players in the Canadian province have already found some nice series.  The first of those was the Ontario Platinum Series, which featured $1 million awarded to players.

The Bounty Builder Series next ran from Sept. 4-19 with another $1 million guaranteed. Since then, Stars officials have focused on planning an even bigger series with ONCOOP. The festival now doubles the guarantee of the first two series.

Here’s a look at the complete series.

PokerStars Plans Two-Day WCOOP Sequel After DDoS Attacks Lead to Tournament Cancelations

The WCOOP is getting a bit of a sequel this fall at PokerStars after the site was forced to cancel major events on Sunday after undergoing DDoS attacks.

The World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) is getting a bit of a sequel this fall at PokerStars. After having to cancel tournaments over the weekend, the site is planning to re-run the WCOOP Main Events and other tournaments as part of a special Championship Weekend Nov. 5-6.

The series also plans to boost guarantees for several events as well. The move comes after Stars saw numerous hacking attempts over the weekend. The two-day mini WCOOP offers a chance for players to get back in on any missed events.

WCOOP briefly resuming in November at PokerStars

The two-day return of WCOOP is a bit of an unusual situation for online poker. The Stars festival will start on Saturday, Nov. 5. The series will include reruns of all canceled events from Sept. 25 and players can look for the return of:

“To ensure a great WCOOP experience, all the NLHE Main Events will offer players boosted guarantees,” the company noted in a news release.

PokerStars will also run freerolls and added value satellites in the coming weeks. As part of the action, Stars is even adding more to the schedule. Players can expect additional events “to ensure players have plenty of options to choose from.”

PokerStars plans to release more details on the two-day WCOOP in the coming weeks.

Major Sunday events shut down

Beginning on Sunday, Stars players saw major delays in tournaments. The events couldn’t have come at a worse time with the massive series underway.

The WCOOP is one of the biggest events in online poker and some of the site’s major championship events were affected.

“We have paused all tournaments on the .com client whilst we deal with some technical issues,” the company Tweeted initially. “We will update here as soon as we can, sorry for any inconvenience.”

The technical issues continued and the site later announced that all tournaments would be canceled. Players involved in any action that was stopped would receive payouts or refunds based on the Stars cancellation policy.

PokerSats support announced on Monday that DDoS attacks caused the issues. The Stars team hoped to assure users that any personal data on the site was safe.

“We can confirm that all our customers’ accounts are safe and their personal information secure, with no signs of any cyber breach,” the company noted on the PokerStars blog. “Our teams are working to counter the issue and look after customers whose play may have been affected.”

What’s a DDoS attack?

PokerStars certainly isn’t the only company to become the victim of these types of hacking attempts. DDoS stands for Distributed Denial of Service and involves criminals looking to gain access to other computer networks.

“A distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack occurs when multiple machines are operating together to attack one target,” the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Agency notes. “DDoS attackers often leverage the use of a botnet – a group of hijacked Internet-connected devices to carry out large-scale attacks.

“Attackers take advantage of security vulnerabilities or device weaknesses to control numerous devices using command and control software. Once in control, an attacker can command their botnet to conduct DDoS on a target. In this case, the infected devices are also victims of the attack.”

PokerStars support officials believe the issue is now resolved and behind them. The new mini WCOOP offers a chance to at least complete the series and play out the canceled events.

“We have a great track record of keeping our platform operational, however we know how frustrating it can be to experience this kind of disruption, especially during our WCOOP and Galactic series,” the company noted. “We’d like to apologize to everyone affected and thank them for their patience.”

WSOP Online: Eric Mattsson Grabs Main Event Title for $2.8M; Claas Segebrecht Scores Second Bracelet

The WSOP Online wrapped up on Tuesday at GGPoker with Eric Mattsson winning the $5,000 Main Event for $2.8 million.

The World Series of Poker Online wrapped up on Tuesday at GGPoker with the $5,000 Main Event closing out the series on Monday. The tournament featured a $20 million prize pool and when the action concluded, Sweden’s Eric Mattsson took the title for his first bracelet and $2.8 million.

This becomes the biggest score of Mattson’s career and quite a bullet point, winning one of the biggest events in online poker. No stranger to success, Mattson is the top-ranked online poker player in the world.

The last week saw three other events wrap up as well, including one player grabbing his second bracelet of the series. Here’s a look at the action over the last week.

Event 33: $5,000 WSOP Online Main Event

After numerous starting flights throughout the series, the major highlight of the series concluded with some massive returns for players at the top. Mattson (pictured in lead image courtesy PokerStars/Danny Maxwell) pocketed the lion’s share of the prize pool and also landed the bracelet.

The Swedish player has $1.5 million in live tournament winnings, almost doubling that total with this win. His previous biggest cash came in 2017 when he won a $2,200 event at the PokerStars Championship Barcelona series for $337,007.

Mattson, 29, shines at the online tables and has won more than $20 million throughout his career. The bracelet win comes after also winning a $5,250 Bounty Hunters Super High Roller in the GG series as well for $23,293.

The top four players earned seven-figure scores including Thailand’s Sakooh Kannapong, finishing runner-up for $2.1 million. Feng Zhao, of China, scored third for $1.6 million and Finland’s Samuel Vousden took fourth for $1.2 million.

The event crushed the $20 million guarantee, attracting 4,984 entries for a $23.7 million prize pool. Here’s a look at all the top payouts and final table action.

WSOP Online Main Event payouts

  1. Eric Mattsson (Sweden) – $2.8 million
  2. Sakooh Kannapong (Thailand) – $2.1 million
  3. Feng Zhao (China) – $1.6 million
  4. Samuel Vousden (Finland) – $1.2 million
  5. Istvan Briski (Hungary) – $883,404
  6. Yanfei Chi (China) – $662,460
  7. Jordan Spurlin (Canada) – $496,774
  8. Oliver James Sprason (United Kingdom) – $372,530
  9. Timothy Rutherford (Canada) – $279,358

Event 32: $400 The Closer

This penultimate event came with a bargain price point and brought in 3,403 entries for a $1.3 million prize pool. Germany’s Marc Radgen came out on top for $147,983 and his first bracelet.

This was also the biggest tournament score of his career. Daniel Rezaei, of Austria, finished runner-up for$110,970.

Event 31: $1,050 Beat the Pros Bounty Freezeout

The bust-the-pros action brought in 1,318 entries for a $1.3 million prize pool. Germany’s Claas Segebrecht found the top spot again in this one for $54,315.

This marked the second bracelet for Segebrecht, who also won the second event of the series for $102,152. It’s been a huge series for Segebrecht who also recorded a fifth-place finish for $45,329 in the Flip & Go event and a third in the Crazy Eights for $49,415.

The German player also has $2.8 million in live tournament winnings. Naomie Haddad, of Israel, finished runner-up for $54,184.

Event 30: $840 Six-Handed Bounty

Finland’s Joni Jouhkimainen reached the winner’s circle in this event for his first bracelet and a total of $146,067. The poker pro has $5.2 million in live tournament winnings as well.

Jouhkimainen came close to a bracelet twice last year at the WSOP Europe. He finished runner-up twice for a total of more than $500,000.

The bounty action produced a field of 2,024 entries for a $1.6 million prize pool. Brazil’s Bruno Ikeda finished in second for $65,841. It was a huge tournament for Brazilian players, also finding finishes of fourth, fifth, and sixth.

More action coming to GGPoker

The WSOP Online may have come to a close but the bracelet hunting continues in the coming week for American players at WSOP.com. Plenty of action is also coming to GGPoker, especially for low rollers.

The mini MILLION$ is set for Oct. 2-17 with a total of $5 million guaranteed through the entire series. For a complete preview of the festival and schedule, click here.

Online Strategy Session: Poker Tells Expert Zach Elwood Says Watch for Key Timing Issues

Author Zach Elwood offers a look at some key timing issues that can help online poker players in that next big tournament oe cash game.

Editor’s note: Zach Elwood is the author of Reading Poker Tells and Exploiting Poker Tells. He also hosts the the Reading Poker Tells Video Series and People Who Read People podcast. This is the final part of a two-part series. For part one, click here.

The time it takes to act and other timing issues at the poker table can offer some real insight into a player’s hand strength. This tell can help players looking to win pots and pay beyond “ABC poker.”

Find some discussion and key hands below adding to the concepts outlined in the first part of this series. Many of these ideas can also be used in the online poker world as well.

Brian Rast discusses timing issues and their importance at the poker table

Zach Elwood: Can you talk about some behavioral things you look for when you play?

Brian Rast: One big thing is timing. The amount of time a player takes in certain spots can be important. At the end of the hand, someone betting abnormally fast, whatever that means for the spot, I think for most players that’s more likely to be a bluff than a value bet.

This tell is probably more true for amateur players than pro players. With amateur players, for the most part, they’re unwilling to go into the tank and then bluff. Because of the idea that, if you start thinking too long, you’re not confident about your hand.

Zach: It feels uncomfortable to wait a long time and bluff, I think for anyone. It’s interesting because I think even when you think your opponents are likely to give you credit for a hand when you wait a long time and bet, because it’s a pretty widely known concept, it just feels uncomfortable.

Rast: Even me, I feel like I don’t wait too long to bluff. Although maybe it’s not the worst idea.

I play a lot of limit, and in limit, timing becomes very important. Timing can really influence what you think about what someone’s doing. So I think just in general, the tempo with which you play your hands is very important.

Some online poker strategy tips from GGPoker rep and Big Brother winner Kevin Martin.

Hand review: immediate bet from tight player

In a $2-5 No Limit Hold’em cash game, a very tight player makes it $20 pre-flop. I call with Q♠ J♠ on the button.

The flop is Q86. He bets $25 into $47. I call. The turn is the J♣. He bets $45 into $97. I call. The river is the 2. He quickly bets $100 into $187.

We discussed bet timing earlier, with a focus on how immediate bets skew towards bluffs. But in some situations, immediate bets make very strong hands clearly more likely.

This is one such case. When a tight player makes a significant bet immediately, it will almost always be with a very strong hand. The tighter they are, the more reliable this will be.

This is mainly because tight players, for the most part, are not capable of quickly reaching a decision to bluff. To put it another way: their quick-bluff range is almost non- existent.

If this player had an over-pair or a set, the flush draw completing would make him pause a moment. If he were going to bluff, he’d likely want to consider the situation a few moments before betting. This is especially true considering he is first to act. (An immediate bet would be less reliable if he were second to act.)

Based on what I knew of his play, I thought AQwas almost the only hand he could have, so I folded.

Poker pro Dara O’Kearney offers some ICM advice from his latest book Endgame Poker Strategy with poker author Barry Carter.

Quick bets when board texture changes

This hand is from the 2007 World Series of Poker $10,000 Main Event. The WSOP episodes are edited, so it’s hard to know for certain how closely the bet-timing in this hand matches what actually happened.

I’ve been told by a WSOP producer that they generally avoid making actions seem like snap-bets or snap-checks if there are long pauses present, so I tend to think the timing is fairly accurate. In any case, we’ll just assume it’s accurate for the sake of learning, as I think it’s a good example of how board texture can help with a read.

On a flop of 873, the pre-flop raiser, Winston, bets 150,000 into a pot of 232,000. His opponent, Kenny Tran, calls him with A8♠.

The turn is another heart: the 2. After just a few seconds, Winston announces “350,” betting 350,000 into the 532,000 pot. Tran calls again.

The river pairs the board: the 2. Winston, after a few seconds, announces “700,” betting 700,000 into 1.32 million.

As discussed earlier, quick bets often polarize a player’s range to strong and weak hands. On the turn, when Winston bets quickly, we can assume his range is probably the A(maybe the K) or a bluff.

Further examination

If he had a heart weaker than the A, or if he had a hand weaker than a flush, he’d probably want to think a little bit about the situation. It’s very unlikely he’d bet a set or two pair so quickly on a four-flush board.

On the river, when the board pairs, his large, quick bet is also polarizing: it’s likely he’s either got a full-house or a bluff. And him having a full house contradicts his probable range after betting the turn.

If he did have the Aor the Kon the turn, it’s likely he’d want to think for a while before betting the river, as the board texture has changed so much and a full house is now possible.

For some quick and large bets, changes in the board texture can help you in picking out a bluff. When the board changes dramatically and a bettor doesn’t seem to be thoughtful about that change, it can be a clue that he’s bluffing.

In this hand, Tran thought about it quite a while and eventually called with his pair of 8s. Winston had A♠ T♣, for just Ace-high. Tran is an experienced live player, known for being good at reading people. It’s possible the speed of his opponent’s bets played a role in his decision.

Farming to Final Table: Jonathan Gilliam Talks About Winning First WSOP Bracelet at GGPoker

Part-time poker player Jonathan Gilliam spoke with PokerScout about his unique poker life and winning his first WSOP bracelet at GGPoker.

A little gambling was always a part of life for Jonathan Gilliam. He first learned how to play poker during sessions at family get-togethers, which helped foster a love of the game. Even as a kid, Gilliam was winning in his family’s Friday night home games.

Fast forward a few decades later and the winning continues. Gilliam recently grabbed one of poker’s biggest trophies. He scored his first World Series of Poker bracelet bracelet as part of the WSOP Online at GGPoker.

The 37-year-old poker player from Virginia in the United States, regularly travels for some of the larger GG events. That paid off when he won the $1,000 Ultra Deepstack for $149,520 on Sept. 3 while playing in Canada.

“Winning a bracelet has been surreal because that’s the pinnacle of why I started playing and to achieve that as a rec player is phenomenal,” he says, “The moment I won I was actually playing on my phone alone far from home. So there was a lonely feeling and I couldn’t immediately celebrate. I only texted my wife and a few close buddies.”

Marines, poker, and business

As a child, Gilliam spent time in numerous locations. His family moved around a lot and his mother was murdered when he was 11. His grandparents stepped in and raised him in a small town near Lynchburg, Virginia.

The poker life came with some twists and turns for Gilliam. At age 18, he immediately joined the U.S. Marine Corps. His work didn’t leave much time for poker, but Gilliam occasionally found some time to play online. He didn’t play much live poker throughout his military career however.

After 10 years in the service, Gilliam was stationed in Baltimore, Maryland. The state legalized poker around the same time and Gilliam gave it a shot at the Horseshoe Casino in Baltimore.

“I got my first real taste of tournaments at the first WSOP Circuit series in Maryland in 2015,” he says. “I made a deep run in the Main Event and finished fourth. Ever since then I’ve been hooked.”

That finish brought a score of $69,536 and he now has career live tournament winnings of more than $500,000. However, Gilliam has never been a full-time player, preferring running a business as his main source of income to support his family.

The same year he began playing tournaments, Gilliam left the Marines and began refurbishing military trucks for marketing purposes. His company’s biggest client is the Mission BBQ restaurant chain and Gilliam builds all the military trucks seen outside each restaurant.

Life on the farm boosts poker skills

Playing tournament poker was a big part of Gilliam’s life until the pandemic. Live games evaporated in Maryland and he eventually turned to traveling to play online occasionally. COVID also brought another change for Gilliam and his family.

“My wife and six kids decided to follow our dream and buy a farm in Virginia,” he says. “Taking care of our horses, animals, and our ventures is fun. It has definitely cut into how many live tournaments I have played the last couple years, but it has allowed me to study more online and play better than I ever have.”

That paid off in the WSOP Online and Gilliam is now a bracelet winner and pocketed a nice chunk of cash as well. He says the biggest moment in the tournament was actually registering to play.

“That Saturday I had plans that evening and I knew I couldn’t play, but tickets were sold out when I got to the event and I was like, ‘Shoot let me check the lobby,’” he says. “I max late-regged and the rest is history.”

Poker life and the importance of family

The winning continued a few days later. He chopped a Sunday high roller event at GG for another $41,717. At the live poker tables, Gilliam’s play is limited because of the reduced number of tournaments available on the East Coast since the pandemic.

However, when not traveling to play major online series, live tournaments close to home are part of his schedule. Gilliam also enjoys golf, riding ATVs and horses, and target shooting.

Family is also a huge part of his life. That expanded in 2019 when his sister passed away and Gilliam adopted her two children. The farm has made for a nice place to raise a family.

With a nice six-figure score now under his belt, what’s planned for the winnings? His wife Tabitha has been a huge supporter and will definitely be a big part of his plans.

“Not exactly sure what I’ll do with the money yet, but most likely pay off debt and buy my wife a new Ford Bronco or camper,” he says. “She is honestly my biggest fan and supporter, and I couldn’t do any of it without her.

“Tournament schedules are tough and for me to jump on a plane to fly out to Vegas or wherever and leave her with six kids to take care of is hard! Her love and faith in me is really what motivates me to try my best.”

Mini MILLION$ Series Brings Bang for the Buck at GGPoker in October

The mini MILLION$ is coming to GGPoker from Oct. 2-17 with $5 million guaranteed across the series and buy-ins starting at just $1.

The World Series of Poker Online action may be wrapping up soon at GGPoker, but the site has even more tournament action coming in October. That includes some nice tournaments for players with smaller bankrolls.

The mini MILLION$ runs on the site from Oct. 2-17 with a total of $5 million guaranteed across the series. Online poker players will find buy-ins starting at just $1.

The low-roller action promises plenty of bang for the buck including the signature event in the series. The $10.50 Mystery Bounty MILLION$ offers a $1 million guarantee and should be popular with players seeking a major payday. Starting flights run throughout the series and begin on Oct. 6.

Other GGPoker Mini MILLION$ highlights

The mini MILLION$ promises plenty of action for all player levels and bankrolls. The series features numerous tournament types including monster stack, bounty, Omaha, Flip & Go, and more.

“Even though the buy-ins are low, there’s nothing mini about this series,” Global head of GGPoker Sarne Lightman said in a news release. “There’s over $5 million to be won and with buy-ins starting from just $1, mini MILLION$ tournaments are designed to be accessible to almost every player.”

Beyond the Mystery Bounty, the action also includes some other major guarantees. Here’s a look at a few of the highlights.

  • $5 mini Global MILLION$ – Starting flights begin Oct. 2 and the event offers a $300,000 guarantee.
  • $11 Sunday Hundred Grand – This tournament is set for Oct. 2 and guarantees $101,000.
  • $5.25 Omaholic Mini Bounty MILLION$ – Jump in the Omaha action for just five bucks for a shot at the $100,000 guarantee. Stage 1 events get underway on Oct. 2.

“If you’re sick of the same old tournament series, then the new mini MILLION$ is for you,” GG notes of the new series. “We’re aiming to put the fun and excitement back into poker, mini MILLION$ tournaments are for everyone to enjoy!”

Here’s a look at the complete series.

WSOP Online: Mark Radoja Lands Third Career Bracelet, Colossus Produces Major Numbers

The WSOP Online rolled on over the last week at GGPoker. Mark Radoja was one of those finding a win, adding the third bracelet of his career.

The World Series of Poker Online rolled on over the last week at GGPoker. Mark Radoja was one of those finding a win, adding the third bracelet of his career.

The last week also saw wins from players in France, the Netherlands, Greece, and the United States. The Colossus also wrapped up after seeing the second-largest number of entries of the series and almost a $4 million prize pool.

Only four events remain with action concluding on Sept. 27. Here’s a look at the action from the last week.

Event 25: $315 Superstack Turbo Bounty

After a 14th-place finish in the $1,000 GGMasters High Roller only days earlier for $11,246, France’s Jonathan Therme had another deep run and secured his first WSOP bracelet.

A regular on the European poker scene, he took home a total of $75,620 and also has $664,202 in live tournament winnings. The victory continued a nice run for French players this year in the online action.

The tournament brought in 3,015 entries for a $904,500 prize pool. Finland’s Tommi Lankinen scored the runner-up spot for a total of $36,509. Romania’s Tudor Cristian Bartha Lazar took third for $44,995.

Event 26: $600 Double Chance NLHE

Jans Arends, of the Netherlands, came out on top in this event that produced a nice winner’s payout of $129,745. This became his seventh cash of the series and first bracelet. He also has $522,144 in live tournament winnings.

Andreas Christoforou, of Cyprus, finished runner-up for $97,294. American Dylan Linde came close to his second bracelet, finishing third for $72,960. The event saw 1,777 entries for a $1 million prize pool

Event 27: $1,500 Fifty Stack Bounty

The Fifty Stack action brought in a total of 1,597 entries and created a prize pool of $2.3 million. Canada’s Mark Radoja (pictured in lead image, courtesy WSOP) came out on top for a $95,460 payday and the third bracelet of his career.

The Canadian has more than $3.3 million in live tournament winnings including $2.5 million on the WSOP alone. Austria’s Justus Held finished in second for $95,229. Another Canadian took third, with Alexandre Raymond cashing in for $71,786.

Event 28: $400 Colossus

This popular event from the live WSOP carried over well to the WSOP Online with 10,090 entries for a $3.8 million prize pool. This was the fourth-largest prize pool of the series.

The tournament also produced more entries than every other event except for the Million Dollar Mystery Bounty, which brought in 51,003.

Ourania Zarkantzia, of Greece, was the last player standing for a colossal payout of $378,508. The win brings this player’s first bracelet and biggest career win.

Alexandre Ragazzi took runner-up for $283,837, the largest win by far for this Brazilian rounder. Germany’s Mauricio Ferreira Pais took third for $212,848.

Event 29: $5,000 Short Deck Championship

The Short Deck action saw 145 entries for a $688,750 prize pool. For those new to the game, Short Deck sees all deuces, threes, fours, and fives stripped from the deck. So players use only a 36-card deck, creating plenty of action and high hands

The reduced number of cards even changes the hand rankings a bit. A flush becomes a higher hand than a full house and three of a kind beats a straight.

In this championship, Benjamin Miner captured the title for $688,750. The American player’s record includes $525,279 in live tournament winnings and he now has his first bracelet.

Looking ahead

Only four events remain on the schedule with events concluding on Sept. 27. The second day of action and final table of the $5,000 Main Event highlights the final days of action. That event comes with a $20 million guarantee.

Those with lower bankrolls can circle the $400 Closer on their calendars as well. Here’s a look at all the remaining bracelet events.

  • $840 Six-Handed Bounty No Limit Hold’em – Event 30, Sept. 22
  • $1,050 Beat the Pros Bounty Freezeout – Event 31, Sept. 24
  • $400 The Closer Series Saver – Event 32, Sept. 25
  • $5,000 WSOP Online Main Event – Event 33, Sept. 26

Triton Series Concludes After Player Death; Phil Ivey Snags Short Deck Title, Punsri Wins Main Event

The Triton Super High Roller Series came to an early conclusion in North Cyprus after the sudden death of a regular player on the tour.

The Triton Super High Roller Series came to an early conclusion over the weekend in North Cyprus after the sudden death of a regular player on the tour. The final tournament played to a winner on Saturday, cutting the series short by two events.

Seng Yee “Ivan” Leow, 41, passed away unexpectedly while in North Cyprus to play in the series. With the action now concluded, later events saw wins by Phil Ivey, Sam Greenwood, and others.

Here’s a look at the second half of the series. For a look at the first half of the series, click here.

Death of Leow stuns Triton players, organizers

Leow’s passing left many players on the tour stunned and organizers facing a difficult situation. After his death, the tour released a statement honoring the player originally from Malaysia

“Ivan was a hugely popular member of the Triton family,” the statement noted. “He was warm, generous, and enormous fun both at the tables and off – a loyal friend to us all. He was also a fantastic poker player, with a lifelong passion for the game.

“Ivan was a very special person who lived life to the full, was always smiling, and loved the game of poker. He will be sincerely missed by his family, friends, and everyone who had the pleasure of meeting him.”

In a poker career stretching to 2015, Leow had $13 million in live tournament winnings. In Triton events, he recorded 12 final table appearances, winning two of those. Numerous players offered condolences online and memories of playing with Leow.

“My first interaction with Ivan Leow was in Macau and it was nothing but positive vibes,” poker player Randy Lew noted on Twitter. “He was always smiling and welcoming to every single person. He will be greatly missed. Rest in peace my friend.”

At the tables, a few more events wrapped up over the last week including the series’ championship. Thailand’s Punnat Punsri took the title in this tournament that brought in 99 entries for a $9.9 million prize pool.

The Main Event featured some of the biggest names in poker with Punsri rising to the top for the biggest score of his career.

Describing himself as more of a cash game player, he now has a major bullet point on his resumé and $4.3 million in live tournament winnings. Hong Kong’s Wayne Heung took runner-up for $1.8 million. Here’s a look at the final table payouts.

  1. Punnat Punsri, Thailand – $2,600,000
  2. Wayne Heung, Hong Kong – $1,825,000
  3. Wiktor Malinowski, Poland – $1,210,000
  4. Henrik Hecklen, Denmark – $946,000
  5. Jason Koon, USA – $762,000

Event 9: $50,000 NLHE Turbo

This event brought the last of the traditional No Limit Hold’em action and saw 32 entries for a $1.6 million prize pool. Austria’s Matthias Eibinger found the winner’s circle for $545,000.

At the Triton Poker Cyprus Special Edition in April, Eibinger also scored the title in a NLHE Turbo at the same buy-in level. He took home $676,000 for that win and now has more than $12 million in live tournament winnings.

Jonathan Jaffe, of the United States, finished runner-up for $375,000 and Mikita Badziakouski, of Belarus, took third for $245,000.

Event 10: $30,000 Short Deck – Ante Only

One of the biggest names in poker rose to the top once again in a Triton Short Deck tournament. Phil Ivey (pictured in lead image) grabbed his third Triton title of the year in this event.

“I love playing short deck,” Ivey said after the win. “It’s a great game so I’m very happy.”

The Poker Hall of Famer scored $387,000 for his efforts. He also scored a Short Deck title in the Triton Series in Madrid in April.

Canada’s Sam Greenwood finished in second place for $268,000. Ivey also scored a Triton runner-up finish earlier this year and has lifetime career winnings of more than $38 million.

In June, the 10-time bracelet winner also cashed in at the World Series of Poker. He came in second in the $100,000 No Limit Hold’em High Roller for $1.2 million.

Event 11: $40,000 Short Deck – Ante Only

Karl Chappe-Gatien after his Tirton Super High Roller Short Deck victory.

The Short Deck action continued and France’s Karl Chappe-Gatien entered the field having never played the game in his life. He proved to be a fast learner.

Chappe-Gatien topped a field of 45 to take the title for $565,000 in a tournament that produced a $1.8 million prize pool. Kiat Lee, of Malaysia, finished runner-up for $401,000.

“I was feeling good but I didn’t expect anything,” Chappe-Gatien said of playing the tournament. “I wanted to have fun.”

This score came after finishing third in the $200,000 Coin Rivet Invitational (Event 6) for $2.6 million. The Short Deck title capped a huge series for the recreational player, accounting for more than $3.1 million in winnings.

Event 12: $50,000 Short Deck – Ante Only Single Bullet

This Short Deck event brought an early close to the series. Sam Greenwood continued his nice run in the festival by taking the title for $341,275 after finishing runner-up to Ivey earlier.

The event brought in 30 entries for a $1.5 million prize pool. Seth Davies, of the US, finished runner-up for $290,857 and Malaysia’s Paul Phua took third for $198,498. Ivey again showed his Short Deck prowess, finishing fourth for $181,784.

Beyond the Short Deck action, Greenwood also scored a runner-up finish in an earlier $75,000 No Limit Hold’em event for $1.2 million.
