POKER PODIUM: A Look at Big August Live & Online Winners

August saw some big winners across the live and online poker world and here's a look at a few hitting it big.

Plenty of action continues for online and live players in the coming weeks on the international poker scene. August saw some big winners across the spectrum and that included some massive wins at the PokerStars European Poker Tour Barcelona stop.

A PartyPoker ambassador had a nice run as well with more bracelet winners also finding nice payouts at GGPoker. Day 1 in the 888poker ChampionChip Games also brought some nice scores in the low roller series. Poker Podium once again takes a look at some major poker winners.

PokerStars

The European Poker Tour Barcelona was a huge event in August for PokerStars attracting record numbers for the Main Event. The festival ran from Aug. 8-21 at Casino Barcelona.

The  €5,300 Main Event brought in 2,294 entries with 1,686 unique players for a €11.1 million prize pool. Italy’s Giuliano Bendinelli found the top spot for €1.5 million. He came back to win after being down to a single big blind at one point.

Online poker regular Mikita Badziakouski scored the win in the €100,000 Super High Roller for €2 million. The event saw 68 entries, 16 re-entries, and a €6.6 million prize pool. American poker pro and Hall of Famer Erik Seidel scored second place for €1.3 million.

PokerStars ambassador and Twitch streamer Mason Pye scored a nice win as well in Barcelona. He took down the €550 HORSE for €17,290. Pye added a SCOOP title in April and now has an EPT title to go along with it.

Online qualifier heads to EPT for only $5

Ireland’s Jenny Steele also recorded a motivational story for online poker players in August. The recreational player earned a seat into the EPT Main Event for only $5.

“I said, I really want to play in the EPT Main Event,” Steele told the PokerStars blog. “So I played a fiver satellite, and won into the next round, which was €55. I played the €55, won that one, into the €530. Played the €530 and won that one. All in one night.”

Steele and her husband run a printing business back in Ireland. Both are regular players as well and are always working on their skills.

“Me and my husband are a good tag team, he helps me and I help him,” she said. “But I’m better.”

PartyPoker

One PartyPoker ambassador made some waves recently in the recent McLaren Turbo Series. Twitch streamer Jaime Staples made two final tables in a single weekend.

While he didn’t find the winner’s circle, Staples scored fourth in the $109 Seven-Max Weekender for $4,436. He then went on to take sixth in the $55 Daily Sprint for $710.

Staples followed that up Monday with a third-place finish in the $320 Grand Prix as well for a $11,786 win.

In the Grand Prix Summer Series, Brazil’s Lucas Alves found the top spot in the $109 Main Event.

Two other Brazilian players also made final table appearances. The event brought in 765 entries for a $521,000 prize pool.

The action at PartyPoker now turns to the upcoming Millions Online, which kicks off Thursday. Millions has become one of the biggest series in online poker and runs Sept. 1-27. Look for several tournament formats including six-max, seven-max, eight-max, progressive knockouts (PKO), and more.

The $3,200 Main Event highlights the series and comes with a $2 million guarantee. The first Main Event starting flight is set for Sept. 4. For a complete preview and schedule for the series , click here.

GGPoker

The World Series of Poker Online continues at GG from Aug. 14 – Sept. 27. So far 12 winners have been crowned with the biggest win coming in the $1,500 Millionaire Maker. The tournament brought in  4,706 entries for a $6.7 million prize pool.

Markus Prinz came out on top for a massive $1.2 million payday. The founder of DTOPoker training site locked up one of the biggest wins of his career on Monday.

The second largest winner’s payout came in the $5,000 Six-Handed Championship, which brought in 430 entries for a $2 million prize pool. Daniele Sesta came out on top for $400,213.

Many eyes were also on the Million Dollar Mystery Bounty. “PH14” came out on top for $367,953, but the bigger prize went to one lucky bounty winner.

Two-time bracelet winner Scott “ItsRumcake” Ball had the lucky draw for a cool million bucks. It took a bit for Ball to realize how big he’d actually won.

COOP coming to Ontario

With a new platform in Ontario, PokerStars is also bringing the company’s popular Championship of Online Poker (COOP) brand to the market.

The Ontario Championship of Online Poker (ONCOOP) becomes the first major online championship series for Stars players in the state. The series is set for Oct. 1-17 with more details coming soon.

WPT’s Feeder & Funnel Program Offers Qualifying Opportunities at Casinos Around the World

The WPT recently detailed the Feeder and Funnel Program, allowing partner casinos around the world to offer live satellites for WPT events.

For players looking to grab a seat in a World Poker Tour event, there may not be a better time to qualify. The company recently unveiled details of the $10,400 WPT World Championship, which features a record-setting $15 million guarantee, and numerous opportunities to score a seat at a bargain price.

The tournament and series are planned for Wynn Las Vegas in December. As part of the announcement, WPT also detailed the Feeder and Funnel Program (FFP). The system allows for partner casinos around the world to offer live satellites for WPT events.

The FFP may not be exactly new, but the tour is now working to spotlight the program even more. At a time when online qualifying and other satellite opportunities are becoming an even bigger part of poker, FFP offers another example of those efforts.

“This B2B (business to business) program has been in place for quite some time now but was not made public until recently,” WPT  Vice President of Global Tour Management Angelica Hael told PokerScout.

“At its core, the Feeder and Funnel Program is a testament to our global partnerships, with the vision of sending local players to WPT events around the world. This year, WPT Global, Club WPT, and our brick-and-mortar partners will send hundreds of qualifiers to the WPT World Championship at Wynn Las Vegas.”

Expanding tournament fields

This year the WPT Main Tour and the mid-major WPT Prime have offered events in Australia, Vietnam, Cambodia, and the United States. More events are also on tap in Spain and Taiwan.

The recent Cambodia stop was the largest WPT event in the country with 1,050 entries and a $1 million prize pool. That event offers a look into the success of FFP.

The tournament hosted players from several groups including Thank God for Poker, ITM Group, Hot Stone Venture, Chinese Texas Hold’em Poker Association, and Crown Poker Club Vietnam. All are partners in the qualifying program.

The online poker action continues in the WPT World Online Championships at partypoker through this weekend with plenty more on the agenda.

Even more is in the works. The tour currently has FFP partners in Australia, Cambodia, Canada, India, Korea, New Zealand, Taiwan, USA, and Vietnam. Tour officials will release more information and details on satellite scheduling at these properties soon.

“This program has already been in place for quite a while, preceding the announcement of this year’s WPT World Championship,” Heel said.

“We are simply focusing on making it more known to the general public now. We wanted to formalize the concept by letting the global poker community know that WPT Passports are up for grabs, not only via ClubWPT in the United States and internationally on WPT Global, but also live through our global casino partners.”

WPT live qualifiers coming soon

WPT officials are happy to bring more opportunities for players of all poker levels. Casinos are pleased to see a focus on offering major qualifying events at their properties.

“Our casino partners were thrilled at the prospect of welcoming players from around the world via our online and offline partners,” Hael said.

“A special shout out to the Gardens Casino in Southern California who has sent players to WPT Seminole Hard Rock Poker Showdown and the WPT Five Diamond World Poker Classic over the years. The Gardens Casino will once again give their players the opportunity to qualify for packages. This time around, the destination will be Wynn Las Vegas for the WPT World Championship.”

With such a major guarantee, bringing in more players only offers a better chance to meet that $15 million as well.

While complete details on FFP qualifiers aren’t yet complete, a few events are in the works. Australians will have two opportunities to secure WPT World Championship seats at The Star Casino from Sept. 24-27 during WPT Australia. This is the first-ever Main Tour event in the country and also offers World Championship seats up for grabs.

A second opportunity is planned at The Star Sydney in early October. In September and October, Wynn will also offer several satellites in Las Vegas. For a complete preview of the schedule, click here.

Inside Triton Poker: A Look at GGPoker Partnership, Mobile App, Upcoming Cyprus Series

Triton Poker may be entering a new stage as the high roller series continues seeing its partnership with GGPoker grow

Triton Poker may be entering a new stage as the high roller series continues seeing its partnership with GGPoker grow. The company announced a deal with GG in March and that’s led to more Triton opportunities for online poker players around the world.

The Super High Roller Series Cyprus is only days away, running Sept. 5-19 with 13 high roller events on tap. With GG now part of the equation, look for several online players to rub elbows with some of the biggest names in the game.

“This partnership has great synergy between the titans of online and offline poker, with the experience of both GGPoker and Triton, we share a common goal of growing the global poker fanbase,” Triton CEO Andy Wong told PokerScout.

Wong also spoke about the company’s efforts at growing the Triton Poker Plus mobile app. The multimedia offers gives players the complete inside scoop on the world’s biggest high roller series.

Expanding Triton online opportunities

For poker fans, Triton has become known for two big major bullet points: huge buy-ins and payouts; and slick production value. Those efforts look to continue and the deal with GG now offers average Joe players a chance to be part of that.

It’s now possible for online poker players of all levels to have a chance to play on such a major stage with massive price points they might not otherwise be able to achieve. This puts the company on par with other major live series offering online qualifiers. These are already underway for the upcoming Triton Super High Roller Series Cyprus.

“We are definitely looking to expand the online qualifiers for the rest of the calendar to introduce new players to play at Triton events,” Wong says. “The online qualifiers are open to anyone who can play on GGPoker, and it gives an exciting opportunity to anyone to be a part of this.

“The online qualifiers will hopefully increase the diversity of players, including recreational players, who show up at Triton tournaments. As part of the Triton DNA, even with the higher-level tournaments such as the Triton Million, we always encourage a good mix of professional players playing against recreational players.”

Wong wouldn’t comment on possible Triton online events, but perhaps that may be in the works at some point. Online players will have to wait and see.

Either way, seeing some recreational players as part of the mix seems enticing for more poker operators. Will an online qualifier rise up and find a nice score in North Cyprus? This adds another fun possibility for those checking out the action.

Triton Poker growing app capabilities

Along with the GGPoker partnership, Triton is also working to ramp up the company’s mobile app. Triton is already known for offering nice streaming production via its YouTube channel. The company has also found some success syndicating Triton coverage on television in recent years.

The Triton Poker Plus app also gives poker fans easy access to everything Triton. Users will find a range of comprehensive player and tournament data as well as the opportunity to view more than 500 hours of event coverage. Poker fans and players will also find:

  • live chip counts
  • seating charts
  • payouts
  • live tournament details
  • schedules
  • player of the year rankings

“Triton Poker Plus brings an added dimension to how fans can live stream their favorite players at our events,” Wong says. “Enhanced poker entertainment right at your fingertips with full live data on all tournaments and recent hand histories of fan-favorite players – paving a better way to watch poker.”

Coin Rivet, Luxon Pay partnerships include tournaments, Espen Jorstad cash game

Along with the GG partnership, Coin Rivet also has become a Triton partner. The company is running the Coin Rivet Invitational from Sept. 10-12 in conjunction with the Super High Roller Series Cyprus.

The event features a $200,000 buy-in and a unique mix of pros and well-heeled business professionals. The player cap on the event was recently increased from 64 to 80.

When play kicks off, pros and businessmen are separated on the first day of the tournament. The fields are then merged on Day 2. World Series of Poker Main Event champion Espen Jorstad was also hosting a live cash game as part of the Mediterranean Poker Party, which precedes the Triton series.

All major final tables are streamed on the Luxon Pay YouTube channel with commentary from Henry Kilbane and James Dempsey.

WSOP Online: Four New Champions Crowned, Mystery Bounty Delivers on $10 Million Guarantee

GGPoker is launching the WSOP Online in Ontario, Canada, and also partnering with Dusk Till Dawn for the UK Poker Championships.

After another week of action at GGPoker, the World Series of Poker Online crowned four more champions with more action ahead this weekend. The $1 million Mystery Bounty event also continues to build excitement this week with entries now topping 50,000.

The series offers international players 33 bracelet events running though Sept. 27 at GG. The series then moves to WSOP.com from Sept. 10 – Oct. 18 for players in legalized US markets. Here’s a quick look at the action over the last week.

Event 4: $1,050 Bounty Deepstack

This event offered another larger buy-in and saw 986 entries for a $986,000 prize pool. Italy’s Jacopo Olivieri Achille came out on top for his first bracelet and $39,862 in prize money. This was his sixth cash of the series.

Brazilian players scored well in the tournament with Carlos Henrique Ferreira Silva finishing runner-up for $39,763. His countryman Alexandre Mantovani took third for $31,609.

Event 5: $315 Six-Handed Bounty

This tournament brought back the more bargain-priced bracelet action. France’s Jon Garde found the winner’s circle for $28,356. This was his eight cash of the series and first bracelet.

China’s Weichao Xhang finished runner-up for $28,286 with American Joshua Hoesel finishing third for $20,684. The tournament received 2,312 entries for a $693,600 prize pool.

Event6: $800 Monster Stack

Players tend to appreciate getting more chips and received plenty in the Monster Stack. A monstrous field of 1,797 entries produced a $1.4 million prize pool.

Jonas Lauck found the top spot for $173,224. The German player has more than $1.9 million in live tournament winnings and now a huge online accomplishment as well.

Event 8: $5,000 Six-Handed NLH Championship

This offered a chance to take down a nice championship event and score a big payday in the process. The tournament saw Daniele Sesta rise to the top for $400,213 and his first WSOP bracelet.

The tournament attracted 430 entries for a $2 million prize pool.

Mystery Bounty tops guarantee

Starting flights and satellites continued earlier this week for Event 7: Million Dollar Mystery Bounty. The event features a $10 million guaranteed prize pool.

As part of the mystery bounty portion of the tournament, one lucky player will snag a nice $1 million prize for simply knocking out another player. As of Friday the event had met the guarantee with 51,003 entries so far with a $10.2 million prize pool. The final table was set to be streamed on Saturday at GGPoker.TV.

Looking ahead

Plenty of action remains in the coming weeks. Looking to the weekend beyond the Mystery Bounty, players will see another huge event on Saturday. The $10,000 Heads Up NLHE Championship should bring in plenty of high rollers looking for a nice title. The tournament is capped at 128 players.

Also on Saturday, the $400 Double Stack Bounty and $10,000 Super MILLION$ High Roller also get started. Monday also brings starting flights for another popular event – the $1,500 Millionaire Maker. The tournament once again guarantees $1 million for the winner as seen in the live WSOP each summer. Here’s a look at the complete WSOP Online schedule.

The action wrapped up recently at the PokerStars European Poker Tour stop in Barcelona that saw record numbers for an EPT Main Event.

The action wrapped up recently at the PokerStars European Poker Tour stop in Barcelona that saw record numbers for an EPT Main Event. The series ran from Aug. 8-21 at Casino Barcelona with players from around the globe jumping in the action.

The  €5,300 Main Event highlighted the series and saw 2,294 entries with 1,686 unique players. That’s a tour record and a 15% increase from the last EPT Barcelona Main Event in 2019, which received 1,988 entries. The action in Spain follows a three-year hiatus for the series.

“Returning to Barcelona after three years has been beyond anything we had ever imagined,” PokerStars head of global live event operations Cedric Billot said in a news release. “We had a record number of entries to our both EPT and ESPT Main Events, the Woman’s Platinum Pass event, and lots of epic poker action across the schedule.

“We are pleased to see so many of the PokerStars community return to Barcelona again, and it’s great to be able to step back into the live space and offer our players memorable live experiences that we look forward to continuing throughout the year at EPT London and Prague and into next year with the PCA and the PSPC in the Bahamas”.

PokerStars EPT Main Event scores big

Jimmy Guerrero, of France, finished runner-up for €1.3 million, followed by Brazil’s Neville Costa in third for €734,470.

Giada Fang Grabs Platinum Pass in Special PokerStars Women’s Tournament at EPT Barcelona

After a two-year delay, the PokerStars Women’s Platinum Pass tournament played out last week with Italy’s Giada Fang coming out on top.

After a two-year delay because of COVID-19, the PokerStars Women’s Platinum Pass tournament finally played out last week at the European Poker Tour stop in Barcelona. In the end, Italy’s Giada Fang came out on top for one of the most coveted poker prizes.

A Platinum Pass is valued at $30,000 and includes a complete trip for two to the Bahamas in January. That includes a $25,000 buy-in to the PokerStars Players Championship (PSPC).

“I just can’t wait to fly to the Bahamas!” Fang said as PokerStars commentator Joe Stapleton and ambassador Jennifer Shahade presented her with the prize.

A look at the PokerStars Platinum Pass winner

The winner-take-all women’s event turned into a major part of EPT Barcelona with PokerStars streaming the entire tournament. Fang (pictured in lead image) made an interesting life change prior to playing poker. She left behind a career in medicine to become a full-time player.

“I never regretted my change,” she said in her post-tournament interview. “I loved being a doctor and surgeon, but that’s something I can always go back to. Now that I’m still young and can travel, and I love playing poker, I decided to make poker my career. I definitely don’t regret it.”

At the live tables, Fang has more than $53,000 in live tournament winnings. She also works as a poker commentator and has achieved European female Supernova Elite status online. Fang now serves as a PokerStars ambassador and also streams her action on Twitch.

Now with a Platinum Pass in hand, Fang has six months to prepare for what should be one of the biggest events on the 2023 poker calendar.

Inspirational women take part

The original idea for the Platinum Pass competition saw poker fans nominate inspirational women for the event. Seven made the trip to Casino Barcelona for the tournament.

This final table was two years in the making, with finalists selected in 2020 as part of International Women’s Day. PokerStars asked for nominations of women who made an impact on the poker community. The winner was to take home a Platinum Pass, which awards:

  • $25,000 PSPC buy-in
  • six nights’ hotel accommodation for winner and a guest
  • airport transfers
  • $1,900 in expenses
  • exclusive winner experiences

“Our record-breaking event in Barcelona was the perfect setting to bring some of poker’s amazing women together and shine a spotlight on them,” PokerStars director of partnerships and consumer engagement Rebecca McAdam Willetts said in a news release.

“We are committed to making sure our online and live tables are a comfortable, fun, and inclusive space for everyone to compete on a level playing ground.”

Highlighting female players

Nine finalists were eventually selected and 28 months later, the special tournament was on in Barcelona. Along with Fang, the finalists included:

  • Davia Bryne – Poker pro and founder of FLIP (Fantastic Ladies in Poker), the largest female-only poker community on Facebook.
  • Christina Read – Founder of the Poker Queens women’s poker group. The forum supports fellow female players in the industry through providing tips, advice, and mentoring.
  • Meichelle Culhane – Volunteer poker teacher for senior citizens at the Broken Arrow Senior Activity Center in Oklahoma.
  • Terry Hatcher – Founder of a weekly Monday night PokerStars Home Games ladies tournament. All proceeds, $30,000 to date, go toward female non-profit charities.
  • Lexi Sterner – The nurse and poker player fell in love with the game following some tragic family news at a young age. That helped shape her into the person she is today.
  • Aurelie Reard – A former audio-visual engineer, Reard has played professionally for nine years in tournaments  around the globe. She’s also committed herself to promoting female players in the industry.

Qualifiers were pleased to have an opportunity to compete for such a big poker prize.

“When I found out, I was so surprised and overwhelmed by the support,” Byrne recently told PokerScout. “To be part of the top nine, you needed to have so many votes and the kind validation from the community means so much to me. Knowing that people appreciate what you do encourages me even more to work harder to achieve more equality at the tables and higher female representation in the poker industry as a whole.”

Finalists Jan Fisher and Katie Stone couldn’t make the trip, but received Road to PSPC tournament packages instead. The entire tournament took three and a half hours. Here’s a look at where each player finished.

Online Poker Strategy Session: Zach Elwood Offers Advice on Quick Actions at the Tables

Zach Elwood , author of Exploiting Poker Tells, analyzes quick actions at the tables, some of the most critical online poker tells.

Editor’s note: Zach Elwood is the author of Reading Poker Tells and Exploiting Poker Tells. He also hosts the the Reading Poker Tells Video Series and People Who Read People podcast. He offers PokerScout readers some strategy advice below.

While there may be less information available on competitors at the online poker tables, there are some tells that can give players some information on the strength of an opponent’s hand.

Quick action is one of the most critical online poker tells. Online, actions that take a long time aren’t going to be reliable: this is because we don’t know the reasons a player might be taking a long time.

They could be multi-tabling, or distracted, or whatever. For this reason, only quick actions are worth paying attention to.

As with most poker tells, it’s important to have some sense of a player’sbaseline. For example, if a player is always betting immediately just due to being a very experienced player, their immediate actions won’t be meaningful.

And this means that, as is the case for poker tells in general, the most of the value you’ll get from these patterns is when playing more recreational players who are more likely to have timing imbalances.

These are some excerpts from Exploiting Poker Tells that are relevant to online poker and have to do with quick calls and quick bets.

Quick call of four-bet defines range ($5-10 NLHE cash game)

I raise in middle position with K♣Kto $35. A fairly tight player behind me makes it $115. Stacks are $1,200. I make it $325 and my opponent calls within about four seconds.

This situation comes up fairly frequently: an opponent calling a three-bet or four-bet quickly. This might be a literal “snap call,” or it might just be an unusually fast call considering a player’s usual speed of action. In most of these cases, these quick calls will point to medium-strength hands: hands that, from that player’s perspective, are obviously too strong to fold, while also obviously too weak to raise.

For most recreational players, quick calls of pre-flop three-bets and four-bets will make JJ and QQ likely. JJ is significantly more likely than QQ, but QQ becomes more likely the tighter the player is.

Some inexperienced players may also call quickly with AK, whereas better players will usually spend a little time thinking about the situation before reaching a decision. How well you’re able to pinpoint a player’s range will depend on your knowledge of their playing style.

In this case, because I had a few dozen hours playing with this player, I was very confident he had QQ. I knew he was tight enough that he would probably at least consider folding JJ and AK. I knew if he had AA or KK he would consider raising. So there wasn’t much left except QQ.

Knowing that AA, KK, and AK are unlikely is obviously great information to have post-flop. It can influence you to bluff on Ace-high boards, and it can encourage you to slow play if you think that you’re ahead but your opponent will fold to a bet.

Snap-call of a three-bet ($5-10 NLHE cash game)

A very tight player makes it $35 in the hijack. And “very tight” is an understatement: this guy is probably one of the tightest players in the world. It’s basically impossible to get value out of him, so my only approach when in hands with him is to try to get him off hands whenever I see a promising spot to do so. He has about $700 to start this hand and I cover.

When this player raises pre-flop, it’s a very tight range. He often doesn’t raise first in with AK, but he will in late position. I’ve noticed that when he raises late with hands like AK or AQ or low pairs, he makes his raises larger than he would if he had big pairs. If he had KK or AA, he’d probably make it $30 here, so his $35 raise makes KK and AA less likely.

A player behind him calls; this player is fairly tight and mostly straightforward. I’m in the big blind with K8. I make it $135.

Deducing Queens

I know that if the first raiser has AA or KK, he will be waiting a while and then either shoving or near-shoving. If he has AK or pairs JJ or lower, he’ll most likely be folding. The only hands he’ll just call with, I think, are QQ, and maybe JJ and AK suited.

He calls my raise after only about three seconds. This quick call – quick when taking into account his usual behavior – restricts this player almost exclusively to QQ. If he had paused a bit before putting in the call, it becomes more possible he might have JJ or AK suited, but the immediate call is very range defining for a player this tight.

The other player calls also.

The flop is K♣Q7. I check and the tight player bets $300 into $420. The other player folds and I fold.

The bettor shows QQ♣, for a set.

Even if I had a strong hand here on this flop, including AA or a set of 7s, I would have folded to any bet from him. That’s how confident I was that his behavior combined with his playing style narrowed his range to only QQ.

Quick bet polarizes & weakens range (2013 PokerStars EPT €10,000 NLHE tournament)

Jason Lavallee min-raises to 60,000 from middle position and Carla Sabini calls on the button. The big blind also calls.

The flop is 983♠ and Lavallee continuation bets for 78,000. Sabini calls. The turn is the 3. Lavallee checks and Sabini quickly bets 100,000. Lavallee calls.

The river is the K♠. Lavallee checks and Sabini again quickly bets 160,000 , around a third of the pot. He makes the call with Q♣J♣, beating Sabini’s QT.

Lavallee talked afterward in a PokerNews interview with Kristy Arnett about how his opponent’s bet-timing was a factor in his call:

Player comments on big call

“I ended up checking [the turn] and she made a pretty small bet but really fast. Which against non-experienced players, usually, one of their biggest leaks is not value-betting light enough and just in general playing too polarized, where they’ll bet their really big hands or their absolute air, but they won’t really know what to do with the middle part of their range. Like if she shows up on the turn with like 87 suited, which is middle pair, I wouldn’t expect her to bet really quickly; she would consider what to do with that hand.

“And usually in tournaments, they’ll opt even more for pot-control lines, which means not betting and being put to a tough decision, and instead try to steer the hand toward showdown. So when she bet really quickly it was an interesting decision because, I didn’t think she had total air, but I wasn’t sure what she would end up doing with like a 9, an 8, or like pocket 6s type of hand, and I didn’t think that she would bet it that quickly.

“I thought about raising, but I didn’t see what raising would accomplish, because the stuff that I actually end up beating, stuff like 6-7 suited, J10, and Q10, I already beat with my specific hand. So I decided to call instead, which is very non-conventional; it’s one of those things that you, in the moment, you feel or you don’t. There’s something to be said about instinctual play; it’s definitely not a standard line that I take all the time.

“And the river brought an off-suit King. And I checked and she bet really fast again.”

Analyzing the hand

Lavallee explains in a clear way how quick bets can polarize a player’s hand range. This is probably the most important and reliable aspect of quick bets: they make medium-strength hands unlikely because most players need to consider what to do with medium-strength hands.

Whereas with clearly strong and clearly bluff-worthy hands there is less thought required.

Besides this basic reason, we also have the fact that bluffers often wish to appear confident, which leads to them betting quickly. Conversely, players with very strong hands can have a motivation to appear uncertain, which can lead to them physically or verbally “hemming and hawing” (to quote Phil Hellmuth) before betting.

For these reasons, quick bets will make it a bit more likely than usual that a bet is a bluff. But this is not a big factor; you should always remember that overall, most significant bets are value-bets and not bluffs.

I wanted to include Lavallee’s exact words because it’s not often that experienced high-stakes players talk about how opponent behavior can influence their decisions. Many serious players don’t like to talk about such things because they feel it reduces their edge – and they’re probably right

MILLIONS Online Brings Big Bucks Back to PartyPoker; Main Event Features $2M Guaranteed

MILLIONS Online heads back to PartyPoker from Sept. 1-27 with wide variety of tournament formats and a $2 million Main Event.

Major online poker series continue rolling out lately with PartyPoker now the latest to announce a major series coming to players around the world. MILLIONS Online is the company’s most prestigious series of the year and is just two weeks away.

The series is set for Sept. 1-27 and players can expect a wide variety of tournament formats including six-max, seven-max, eight-max, progressive knockouts (PKO), and more.

The first weekend of action includes the first Main Event starting flight on Sept. 4. The $3,200 buy-in event includes a $2 million guaranteed prize pool.

“I’m really excited for MILLIONS Online,” PartyPoker ambassador Patrick Leonard said in a news release. “Last time out, I made the Main Event final table and was gutted to be eliminated after coming so far. The quality structure and amazing satellite system makes this a must-play series. I can’t wait.”

PartyPoker MILLIONS Online highlights

MILLIONS Online offers players yet another major tournament series running during September. The schedule includes buy-ins for every level of player.

Several starting flights are available for Main Event players, running on all four Sundays of the series. Two further flights are planned for Sept. 26 with Day 2 getting underway on the same day.

A champion is crowned on Day 3, the final day of the series. Argentina’s Ramiro Petrone took the top spot last year, scoring a payday of $859,018.

The $1,575 Opener PKO kicks off the series with a $250,000 guarantee. Those with lower bankrolls can also check out the $162 Mini Opener PKO with a $100,000 guarantee.

Also, the $320 Mini Main Event runs alongside the Main Event with $500,000 guaranteed. Other highlights include the $530 Super 500, promising a guarantee of $500,000. The $109 Super 100 comes with a $300,000 guarantee. PKO versions of both tournaments will also be available.

Even more PKO action is planned for the final week of the series. For those new to PKOs, these events feature a player winning only a portion of a bounty when eliminating another player. The other portion is added to the winning player’s bounty, making bounties worth more later in the tournament.

The $1,575 Closer PKO offers a $300,000 guarantee and the $162 Mini Closer guarantees $100,000. The Grand, with a buy-in of $1,050, is set for Sundays during the series with a $150,000 guarantee.

Poker fans around the world can check out the series as well. PartyPokerTV will stream all the final table action live on Twitch and YouTube .

Numerous qualifying opportunities planned

As in other series, PartyPoker is once again offering qualifying opportunities for players of all bankroll levels. Main Event satellites begin at just a single cent, with centrolls leading to a feeder satellite worth $3.30.

Players making it through can join the $22 Phase 1 event and then the $109 Phase 2. Those qualifiers then move into the weekly Satellite Final, with no direct buy-in and 10 Main Event seats available. Satellite Finals are scheduled every Sunday through Sept. 25.

Party has found several success stories via the qualifying tree recently. In 2021, Gareth “Gaz the Hippy” Smirthwaite and Vitaly Polikarpov both won their way into the Main Event through the centroll phase.

Throughout the series, players will find special SPINS events awarding Main Event seats. Here’s a look at the main schedule, but there are also numerous other side tournaments throughout the event as well.
