Halloween Hold’em Hijinks: Costume Suggestions for Some Poker Sharks

Halloween is here so it’s time for some ghosts, goblins, and a bit of gambling. No doubt plenty of poker players have their costumes bought and ready for some Halloween fun.

With that in mind, here are a few costume suggestions for some better-known players and social media posters. With Halloween in mind, any needling is all meant in fun and the spirit of the holiday.

Do the costumes match up well with these personalities?

Joey Ingram – poker’s Sherlock Holmes

As the Mike Postle alleged cheating scandal developed, this poker podcaster was one of the chief investigators.

Got some time to kill? Apparently Ingram did. He spent hours and hours poring over video of Postle on the Stones Live poker stream.

 

The work paid off and he produced some great work in helping raise some real questions about the situation. Since then, Stones has launched a second investigation. It might be better just to hire this Sherlock Holmes of poker for the case.

You certainly wouldn’t want Ingram working for the prosecution if you have a legal problem. It might be better just to plead guilty.

Phil Ivey – DB Cooper

The famed poker shark has had some legal trouble over the last few years. That’s included edge sorting, lawsuits, and confiscation of his WSOP winnings this summer by the US Marshals Service.

That $124,000 was forked over to New Jersey’s Borgata casino for the $10 million judgement the property has against him.

Ivey has 10 WSOP bracelets and more than $28 million in live tournament winnings. But in recent years he may have become more known for his issues of jurisprudence than poker. He’s been fighting the Borgata case since 2012.

That changed a bit over the last year and Ivey recently scored two runner-up finishes at the WSOP Europe.

Like the famous skyjacker DB Cooper, Ivey may have gotten away with his edge sorting. He’s now just trying to hang on to the cash.

Daniel Negreanu – Merlin the Magician

He may now be a poker vlogging sensation, but Negreanu’s ability at reading others’ hands amazes many. Like a stage magician knowing which card an audience member selected, he seems otherworldly.

This isn’t a guy you want looking deep into you soul. He might produce some of those scary, long-forgotten childhood memories.

 

Just a quick look into your eyes and Negreanu might even conjure up your email password or ATM pin number. Look away and just give this trick or treater some candy – no questions asked.

Maria Ho – Dracula

Ho wins big at the tables and mans the mic for numerous poker broadcasts. She offers some great insight and has a pleasant voice and demeanor perfect for commentary.

But don’t let that fool you. When the moon comes out and it’s time to play cards, she transforms into a poker vampire.

Sit at her table and she’ll likely take a big bite out of your chip stack. Ho certainly isn’t afraid to draw some blood and currently has almost $4 million in live tournament winnings.

Get in her way, and become her next victim. She’s so nice, however, you’ll probably still tune in to hear her break down the demise of your chip stack.

Phil Hellmuth – National Enquirer photographer or celebrity influencer

The 15-time World Series of Poker champion came close to winning No. 16 last week at the WSOP Europe. Hellmuth took a runner-up and third-place finish in four cashes during the series.

His Twitter followers may be accustomed to Hellmuth’s frequent name-dropping and celebrity selfies. From his Golden State Warriors courtside seats to his private jet or helicopter trips, his #PHNiceLife hashtag has become his calling card.

In the last year, the “Poker Brat” has posted photos of himself with Tiger Woods, Kevin Hart, James Woods, Orel Hershiser, Paul Pierce, Russell Westbrook, Richard Sherman, Steve Aoki, Tito Ortiz, Chris Harrison, Kate Uopton, Jennifer Tilly, the owners of the Warriors, and the list could go on and on.

And who can forget posting a photo of himself in a $2,000 Versace silk shirt he purchased?

 

Along with plenty of skills, Hellmuth brings plenty of spectacle. From his gold shoes to gold headphones to his technology investments, he’s always willing to share – on Twitter.

Doyle Brunson – the Lone Ranger

He’s from Texas, he wears a cowboy hat, and he’s been one of the poker good guys through the years. The Godfather of Poker has been shooting it out at the poker tables for decades.

Brunson may be one of the few links remaining to poker’s Old West and the WSOP’s Texas roots. Even at age 82, he plays for some of the biggest stakes around each day at the Bellagio.

With 10 WSOP bracelets, this cowboy took what he said was his last ride through the series in 2018. It was a nice ride into the tournament sunset – finish sixth in the only event he played, the $10,000 No Limit 2-7 Lowball Championship.

For Halloween, Brunson doesn’t even need a costume. He’s the real deal.

Allen Kessler – Oscar the Grouch

No doubt many poker fans have read a few of the frequent gripes from the “Chainsaw.” From tournaments structures to bad beats, Kessler regularly dishes out his criticisms and complaints about all things poker.

Some players and tournament directors see Kessler as a pain in the neck. But his criticisms do have merit at times and he does look out for poker players. He even occasionally compliments a property on a well-run tournament.

But it’s Kessler’s shade-throwing that attracts attention and the Oscar the Grouch outfit might be fitting. Apparently his reputation has even reached other continents.
