Nevada Poker Report September 2018: Las Vegas Poker Rooms Are Slowly Vanishing

In September 2017, Nevada boasted 62 poker rooms and 598 poker tables. Fast forward a year and that number has been further reduced. The Nevada Gaming Control Board counted just 58 poker rooms and 561 poker tables in September 2018.

The reduction in rooms and tables is part of an ongoing trend, but September was one of the sharpest year-over-year reductions, and that’s reflected in the 2.42 percent Y/Y revenue reduction.

Top line numbers

The number of poker rooms is approaching the historical lows of 2002 and 2003, while the number of tables has fallen to 1990s levels.

However, revenue is much stronger than it was during the 1990s and early 2000s.

You can find a full annual breakdown of poker rooms, tables, and revenue at the end of the column.

September poker revenue was just over $8.5 million compared to the $8.7 million the state’s poker operators generated in September 2017.

And on a per table basis, September 2018 bested last year’s numbers:

  • September 2017 table average: $14,622
  • September 2018 table average: $15,208

That begs the question: Is poker on life support in Nevada, or are poker operators becoming more efficient?

We’re probably a few years away from knowing if it’s the former or the latter.
