ON THE BUTTON: Rafael Moraes Talks Brazilian Poker, His Father’s Approval, Twitch, & More

PokerStars ambassador Rafael Moraes spoke about his poker life, winning his father's approval to play full time, Twitch, and more.

Brazil has become a booming market for online poker and the game in general over the last few years. That ranges from seeing major tournament winners to the rapid growth of the online game in the country.

Companies such as PokerStars are investing heavily in the market with events like the Brazilian Series of Poker and other events. Stars ambassador Rafael Moraes has seen that growth in the land of samba and sun first hand. He believes Brazil’s passion for sports and a deep sense of community go hand in hand with poker’s surge in popularity.

“It’s crazy,” he told PokerScout recently while playing in the PokerStars No Limit Hold’em Players Championship. “I think the Brazilian community is so strong. We have a culture for football (soccer) and we love competition. We all love to be together, we love to root for friends.”

And while many in the country may not have the funds to play at higher levels, seeing countrymen do well is a major part of players’ interest in the game.

“We are a country with a lot of difficulty, a country without so much money for basic things,” Moraes says. “And when we see some Brazilians doing nice things in the world, it’s amazing. They are representing us, so I think in the last five years that has come to poker. That kind of social game and competition does really well in Brazil.”

Moraes has his own Brazilian poker success story to add to that dynamic.

Father gives poker life the thumbs up

Like some other poker pros, Maroes gravitated to poker from another game – chess. But as a teenager, he realized some of those same skills could apply to a game that offered a better chance at a payday.

“I was an amateur chess player,” he says. “A lot of chess players in Brazil started to migrate to playing poker because there are better odds to make money. Poker is a mind game like chess. So I started playing at PokerStars when I was 18, and started to make some money playing tournaments while in university at that time.”

Those winnings continued to grow and Moraes soon faced a crossroads – whether to launch into poker full time or not. Making that jump isn’t always a popular choice among players’ family members, at least initially. However, Moraes experienced quite the opposite when he decided to see where the game could take him.

“I asked my father if I could try to play poker for a living,” he says. “And my father said, ‘but son, what’s poker?’”

Poker is more of a family game in Brazil, Moraes says. Many don’t realize there is serious money to be made for skilled players.  He asked his father to read a book on poker, which he did in one day. After understanding how the game works, Moraes’s father gave his blessing.

“He’s an engineer, so he knows a lot about mathematics and odds,” Moraes says. “It’s amazing how he understood that game. He said it was good that I was making money.”

Moraes’s father said his son was still young and could see how things went. If the poker career didn’t pan out, he could return to his university studies.

Streaming, playing, and finding poker success

Now age 30, that choice has worked out well. He now has more than $1.9 million in live tournament winnings. The biggest of that came in 2016 when the player originally from Sao Paulo scored third in the €25,750 High Roller at the European Poker Tour Monte Carlo. That brought a payday of $655,779.

In 2022, Moraes won a Brazilian Series of Poker event for $60,762. When not playing live, he can also be found streaming on Twitch. He loves that aspect of his poker life because Maroes sees Twitch as a way to spread his love of the game in Brazil.

“The people in Brazil can see me playing, teaching, making final tables, and running deep,” he says. “Every week I run a freeroll on my home game on PokerStars. They can start to play without a bankroll. Because in Brazil a $10 buy-in is too much for a lot of people. With my freerolls, community, and teaching classes, people can start playing without putting up much money.”

Looking back, Moraes knows his father’s blessing helped launch him to success on the felt. He’s happy to be living his dream.

“Now I’m a high stakes poker player,” he says. “And I’m traveling abroad, playing the biggest PokerStars events on the road, and I live stream my play on Twitch.”

For Moraes, that’s the perfect poker life.

Brazil’s Best: World’s Top Online Player Yuri Dzivielevski Discusses Success, New Role With Partypoker

Brazil's Yuri "theNERDguy" Dzivielevski recently spoke with PokerScout about signing with partypoker and his success on the felt.

It’s been a banner few months for Brazilian online poker players. Rounders from the land of samba and sun have scored massive tournament wins on some of the game’s biggest stages.

As the sixth most-populous country, Brazil represents a growing market apparently with plenty of talent. Partypoker recognizes that and recently announced the signing of Yuri “theNERDguy” Dzivielevski as a site ambassador.

The company didn’t just sign any Brazilian player, Dzivielevski is currently the top-ranked online tournament player in the world. The Brazilian star spoke with PokerScout this week about his poker life and new deal with partypoker.

“It’s a very special moment in my career,” he says. “It will be an honor for me to represent a brand I admire. I am very happy.”

Climbing the poker rankings

Dzivielevski began playing poker after his brother first introduced him to the game. Playing home games with friends became part of his normal routine and he had a knack for the game. His poker skills eventually helped his family out.

After leaving high school, he began making a living from poker to help his parents out. Those early days grinding it out online proved to be some great learning opportunities and his career soon skyrocketed.

He’s one of the most successful poker players in Latin America with online winnings totaling $14 million. That’s a record for any player based in Latin America.

Beyond the virtual felt, the 29-year-old has $1.2 million in live tournament winnings. In 2019 he even added a World Series of Poker bracelet to his trophy case. He took down a $2,500 Mixed Omaha Hi/Lo, Seven Card Stud Hi/Lo event for $213,750.

A year later, the WSOP Online produced another bracelet after Dzivielevski won the $400 PLOSSUS for $221,557. The partypoker signing now becomes another nice bullet point in his career.

“This is a dream come true,” he says. “Joining partypoker is one of the most important achievements in my career and I am very excited to work with them.”

https://twitter.com/YuriNerdguy/status/1433160585802403847?s=20

Joining the partypoker crew

Dzivielevski’s Team partypoker signing comes just as WPT World Online Championships are playing out at the site. Along with representing the brand,  he’ll be a regular face on partypoker’s Twitch channel, partypokerTV.

That work includes contributing to daily shows as well as streaming some new content of his own. Additionally, the Brazilian pro will run exclusive streamed tournaments.

In an age when so many online players stream their action, playing on Twitch will be a new experience.

“I actually don’t have a streaming channel, but I’ll be streaming weekly on partypoker Brazil,” he says. “My team and I will work together to give viewers the best possible content and I can’t wait to get started.”

Sharpening his skills

Maintaining a ranking atop the entire world’s pool of online poker talent certainly isn’t easy. How does “theNERDguy” work on his game? It involves less actual play at the tables than one might imagine, but there’s plenty of hitting the books.

“I make sure I have some kind of interaction with poker every day, whether playing or studying,” he says. ”I try to play two to three times a week and study on the other days. I don’t have an exact number of hours that I devote to studying, but I study on demand.”

Working with other poker-playing friends is also a major part of his preparation. He set up a study group with some friends in Brazil. The team splits the work and manages to cover most areas of the game, he says.

When not at the tables, Dzivielevski enjoys spending time with family, studying the Bible, surfing, and going to the gym. Drinking wine and eating some nice meals are also regularly on the menu.

Already with two WSOP bracelets, the WPT World Online Championships now offer another opportunity. He remains confident in his chances during the series, with good reason based on results.

“Winning a WPT title would be amazing,” he says. “In fact, it will be amazing! WPT series are such an important part of poker and I love to watch WPT events on TV, so this would be particularly special for me.

“A lot of good things will come from this partnership with partypoker and I’m sure we will create amazing things together.”

PokerStars Roundup: Wheeling Into Formula 1, WCOOP Dates Announced, BSOP Sets Records

PokerStars recently announced a new Formula 1 racing partnership as well as the dates and guarantee for the upcoming WCOOP series.

While it may be synonymous with poker, PokerStars will now become a regular part of Formula 1 racing. The company recently announced a deal that will see the brand highlighted on European broadcasts of the open-wheel racing circuit.

Beyond that deal, Stars also announced the official dates for the 2021 World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP). The news comes after the series recently announced the MicroMillions series in several markets.

The Brazilian Series of Poker also recently wrapped up and scored a record turnout. Here’s a look at some of the items making news at PokerStars.

PokerStars gets the green flag in F1 deal

Flutter International, the owner of PokerStars, announced a new deal this week with Interregional Sports Group (ISG) and Formula 1. The partnership will see the PokerStars brand featured exclusively throughout the European broadcast market for each season through 2023

ISG is a global leader in using virtual advertising technologies to help brands target specific regional sports fans.

Company officials believe combining Stars’ worldwide appeal and this targeted approach make this an exciting partnership for both brands. That could lead to further innovation in the future.

“Working with Formula 1 provides us with the opportunity to reach a fan base whose passion for sport goes way beyond motorsport,” PokerStars group marketing director Tom Warren said in a news release. “To be able to engage an audience of this size and yet focus just on the regions that are key to us makes this a very exciting proposition.”

Company officials note that PokerStars Sports customers are actively engaged in Formula 1 and this season is no different. Visibility among F1 fans offers the operator a chance at reaching new and existing customers.

“We’re delighted to have reached this agreement with Flutter Group,” ISG CEO Tony Ragan said. “Combining the worldwide appeal of PokerStars and this targeted approach in engaging fans with many similar traits as the PokerStars’ community is an incredible opportunity for innovation and further engagement between the two popular brands.”

 WCOOP coming soon

On Wednesday, PokerStars also confirmed the dates for the upcoming World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP). The series has become one of the most prestigious series in online poker and is set for Aug. 22 to Sept. 15.

Players can expect an overall guarantee of $100 million – the series’ biggest guarantee ever. Last year’s series awarded $99.9 million, exceeding the original $80 million guarantee.
