POWER PLAY: Partypoker Unveils $100 Million WPT World Online Championships

The WPT and partypoker are teaming up for the $100 million WPT World Online Championships.

After announcing the new partypoker WPT World Online Championships in mid-May, players were left wondering what would be on the schedule. That was answered in a big way on Friday.

Partypoker will be paying out its biggest prize pool ever before for one series – a guarantee of $100 million. Running from July 17 to Sept. 8, the series is designed to replicate an authentic live poker experience.

The series also revives the WPT World Championship, which was discontinued as a live event after 2015. Asher Conniff took down that event at the Borgata for $974,000. Partypoker officials are pleased to bring back the event online.

“I’m delighted that we have been able to partner with WPT to revive the WPT World Championships and bring the series online for the first time,” partypoker managing director Tom Waters said in a news release.

“We want to give the festival more of a live event feel, so the tournaments will be structured as such, including single re-entry for all NLHE events, freezeouts, limited late registration, and limited Day 1s. Due to popular demand, players will be able to see each other’s real names at the tables.”

Partypoker offers a chance at WPT championship glory

The series will include 12 championship events divided into three categories; Micro, Mini, and Main

Winners of five of the championship events will join the World Poker Tour Champions Club and receive individual trophies. These players will also win a $15,000 entry and travel accommodations for the WPT Tournament of Champions, presented by Baccarat Crystal.

These five events will be made up of four $3,200 buy-in tournaments, each with $3 million guarantees. Four of those events include:

  • 8-Max
  • 6-Max
  • Mix-Max
  • Knockout

The highlight of the series will then be the $10,300 buy-in WPT World Championship Online. The main event runs Aug. 29 to Sept. 2 with a $10 million guarantee. Here’s a look at the complete championship event schedule.

Something for every level of player

Beyond those championship events, WPT and partypoker promise a series appealing to all different bankrolls. Buy-ins range from $33 to $102,000.

That includes a range of satellites throughout the series including satellites for $4.40, $22, and $109. The $109 qualifiers are for the $1,050 buy-in Sunday Final wrapping up the series.

All major disciplines of poker will be included within the championship events: 8-Max NLHE, 6-Max NLHE, Mix-Max NLHE, Knockout NLHE, PLO, PLO8, and Heads Up. There will be at least one micro championship and mini championship event for each of these.

“After the tremendous success of the first-ever WPT Online Championship, the series is back again and trust me, it’s a series you don’t want to miss,” Team partypoker’s Mike Sexton said. “There will be buy-ins for all bankrolls and the series will be massive.”

Players can use their partypoker Live Passport to enter the World Championship and receive the $300 registration fee free.

Series becomes just the latest from partypoker, World Poker Tour

The World Online Championships offer yet another major series from the two companies. In May, the tour and partypoker teamed up for the WPT Online Championships and they continue to make news.

That event featured 94 events and smashed the $30 million guarantee. The series ultimately paid out $52 million. Sweden’s Christian Jeppsson won the $3,200 main event for $6.4 million. That handily beat the $5 million guarantee.

The World Online Championships comes just two days after announcing another big event for US-based players. The new WPT Online Poker Open is for players in New Jersey and runs June 21-28.

The series features 12 events plus a $400 championship on June 28 with $300,000 guaranteed. In New Jersey, the network includes BorgataPoker and BetMGM and players can participate on any of the three sites.

With live poker still on ice because of the Coronavirus pandemic, operators including partypoker, PokerStars, GGPoker, 888poker, and WSOP.com continue to ramp up events and promotions.

That’s led to record numbers of players and prize pools. The World Online Championships have a chance to be another massive event.

Partypoker WPT Online Series Destroys Guarantee with $52 Million Paid Out

The partypoker WPT World Online Championships Main Events are approaching.

The World Poker Tour has postponed several live events, but there has been plenty of tour action online. Partypoker hosted the first WPT Online Series in May and paid out a gigantic $52 million.

The 94-event series smashed the original $30 million guarantee. Players competed in tour-branded events like WPT500, WPTDeepStacks, and the overall championship. All of three major events beat original guarantees.

“I am delighted with the support that we received from players for WPT Online, with accumulated prize pools far exceeding expectations,” partypoker managing director Tom Waters said in a news release. “This is testament to both the popularity and strength of the WPT brand and also the schedule that the team put together.”

Massive numbers and a WPT championship awarded

The series becomes just the latest international online poker series producing huge numbers. Every operator has been reporting massive fields and guarantees being beaten by a wide margin.

In the $3,200 WPT Online Championship, the guarantee of $5 million ballooned to $6.4 million. Sweden’s Christian Jeppsson led going into the final table and edged out Russia’s Viktor Ustimov for the title.

Jeppsson took home $923,785 and added his name to the WPT Champions Cup.

The WPTDeepStacks came with a guarantee of $3 million that swelled to $3.6 million. The United Kingdom’s Jareth East took the title and $557,658 for the biggest win of his career.

Another UK-based player also topped the $3 million guaranteed WPT500. Fabio Sperling was in front in a four-handed chop with remaining players winning between $187,289 and $281,125

Already with a nice resumé of partypoker LIVE titles, Canada’s Sam Greenwood won a high roller tournament for $257,250. He previously won the 2017 Caribbean Poker Main Event and 2018 Grand Final Super High Roller for $1.8 million.

Other notables notch partypoker WPT titles

The WPT Online Series produced even more champions beyond the signature events. Charlie Carrel ($600,250), Elio Fox ($565,500), and Dan Smith ($555,503) all won super high roller events.

“We are thrilled and grateful for the players’ response during the inaugural series,” WPT Europe Vice President Hermance Blum said.

“We wanted WPT Online to deliver an authentic poker experience, with limited re-entries and entry days into the tournaments and the huge prize pools highlight the popularity of the structures and formats of the series. ”

Along with Ustimov, David Ivers, Alexandr Trofimov, and Niklas Astedt all won two events each. Players have another online opportunity for some WPT hardware this summer.

The WPT World Online Championships will be held July 1 to Aug. 9 with 15 championship events. The $10,300 buy-in Season XVIII WPT World Championship Online highlights the action on Aug. 1-8.

POKER BOOM CONTINUES: SCOOP Produces Record-Breaking $185 Million for PokerStars

The 2020 PokerStars SCOOP paid out $185 million.

As more online poker operators announced massive turnouts, PokerStars also trumpeted its own gargantuan numbers last week. The Spring Championship of Online Poker (SCOOP) remains one of the platform’s most popular events and 2020 proved the biggest yet.

With players around the globe at home during the Coronavirus pandemic, many headed to PokerStars. This year SCOOP awarded more than $185 million, the biggest total prize pool in the history of online poker.

Record prize pool reached after PokerStars adds to series

After early SCOOP success, PokerStars bumped up the schedule with 44 additional events. The company also moved the $85 million guarantee to $135 million.

That proved to be a wise decision and produced more than 2.9 million player entries over 124 events. The schedule actually included three separate tournaments for each event: Low, Medium, and High.

All three Main Events surpassed guarantees. The $109 buy-in Low edition produced 46,238 entries for a $4.6 million prize pool. The winner, “auercan,” took home $371,750.

The $1,050 Medium buy-in Main Event awarded $6.5 million with 6,475 entries. “HayashiJoão” earned a huge $920,066 for first place.

A player named “Alexgirs” won the biggest prize of the entire series in the $10,300 Main Event High. The tournament awarded $6.1 million with 609 entries and the winner secured a nice $920,595

The United Kingdom topped the country leaderboard with 46 wins. Brazil followed in second with 45 wins.

UK players “raidalot” and “pads1161” secured more than 90 cashes, taking home $519,276 and $258,584  respectively.

PokerStars SCOOP success stories

Beyond those main event wins, several other players produced some nice stories during the series. PokerStars ambassador Lex Veldhuis smashed his own and the Twitch Poker record after reaching 58,543 concurrent viewers during Day 3 of the High Main Event.

At one point, Veldhuis even had the most-watched channel on Twitch, topping 128,000 other streams. Other interesting notes include:

  • Rui “RuiNF” Ferreira was crowned Player of the Series. This comes after some massive live scores for this Portuguese player in 2019 on the European Poker Tour.
  • Connor “blanconegro” Drinan broke records after winning the most events in a single SCOOP series. The American won five events for a total of more than $550,000 in prize money.
  • PokerStars Ambassador Fintan Hand earned the biggest cash of his career. The Twitch streamer from Ireland won a $1,050 Six-Max Turbo Shootout for a $73,652 payday.

Satellite qualifiers scored big in SCOOP

With plenty of satellites throughout SCOOP, there were plenty of nice success stories. Here’s a look at a few of those:

  • neGREENu” produced one of the biggest satellite scores. This player turned $11 into $37,008 after finishing in fourth place in the $109  NLHE Progressive KO event.
  • alexandro156” turned a $1.45 satellite into $21,612 after placing second in a $11 NLHE Progressive KO event.
  • chikitin099” earned $27,009 after qualifying for $5.50 after coming second in a $22 PLO Six-Max.

Another SCOOP may be in the books, but live poker is still not available for many. With so many players around the world still at home there’s a good chance more big series will continue.

Battle it out with new ‘Club Games’ option

Partypoker recently launched its new Club Games feature, available for cash games with multiple stakes options. This allows a player to set up a game and accept and remove players, with stakes available up to $5/$10.

Club Games will be available on desktop and mobile. There is no limit to the number of clubs a player can join, and can create up to five clubs per person. The rake remains the same as a standard cash game.

The addition comes as more players asked for an option to play with friends during the Coronavirus pandemic.

“Partypoker used to offer private games and it’s been on our roadmap to bring in a new home games offering for a long time now,” partypoker managing director Tom Waters said.

“In recent months, we have been inundated with requests from players who wanted their own home games, so we decided to accelerate the rollout of our new Club Games interface. Initially, players will be able to create their own private cash games for friends to join using either a PC/Mac or mobile device, with the ability to create tournaments to follow.”

PokerStars

SCOOP may be over, but major tournaments continue

A massive SCOOP is now in the books, but players still have plenty to look forward to the on site’s multiple platforms. That includes big Sunday events and daily guarantees.

That includes bringing some flavor of the Tour de France to your poker game as part of the PokerStars Grand Tour. The series brings the worlds of poker and cycling together in a unique new format.

Events feature rich graphics and buy-ins from as little as $1. Players can sprint along the race track eliminating opponents in dynamic tournaments that combine progressive knockout, sit and go, and shootout formats.

Players can win more than $100,000 in prizes and bounties in a race toward the Grand Tour finish line.

Grand Tour is now available on the .COM platform and will launch on real money soon. The game is expected to launch on .EU and .UK soon. Here are some features and how to play:

  • Buy-ins range from $1 to $60. The higher the buy-in, the closer to the finish line players start.
  • Players at the same buy-in level compete in “sprints.” These are four-player progressive knockout sit and go tournaments that last about five minutes.
  • As players knock each other out, their own bounty values increase. They then move to the next sprint, where they will be matched with players of similar bounty values.
  • When someone is eliminated, his value is split two ways. A percentage is added to the winner’s value and a percentage is awarded as cash directly into his account.
  • This cash prize can be multiplied, meaning players could win more than $100,000 at higher stakes.
  • Eliminated players keep any winnings from knockouts.
  • When a player wins a sprint, they can jump right into the next one or save it for later. Every completed sprint gets players closer to the finish line, where they can be crowned a Grand Tour champion.

GGPoker WSOP Super Circuit Series Smashes Guarantee with $134 Million Awarded

The GGPoker WSOP Super Series smashed the $102 million guarantee.

The first international World Series of Poker online series proved to be a major success. After 500 events, including 18 championship ring tournaments, players in the WSOP Super Circuit Series took home $134.7 million.

That vastly exceeded the original $102 million guarantee. The series was held in partnership with GGPoker and wrapped up on March 31.

GG officials said the festival exceeded expectations and that certainly showed in the series’ prize and players pools.

GGPoker WSOP Super Series produces massive numbers

After the partnership announcement in April, the series became something new for both operators. The WSOP.com Super Series has proven popular with players in New Jersey and Nevada.

The GGPoker deal allowed the WSOP to offer the online series to an international audience. As one of the fastest-growing poker sites in the world, GG ramped up the action with massive events and player pools.

GG hosting the series ensured players throughout the globe could play in WSOPC ring events, satellites, and other events. This offered their first opportunity to play in a WSOP tournament.

Here’s a look at some statistics from the series:

  • Number of events – 516
  • Total guaranteed prize pool of all events – $102,365,000
  • Total prizes awarded – $134,706,274
  • Single biggest event prize pool – $12,372,500 (WSOPC Ring Event #8: High Roller Championship $10 million guaranteed)
  • Total number of entries – 485,851
  • Largest number of entries in a single event – 29,357 (WSOPC Ring Event #9: Mini Main Event)

The series also included a major charity tournament, which have been popular recently. The first ring event was a fundraiser for COVID-19 relief and raised $177,045.

“The support of the gaming community for the WSOPC on GGPoker was insane,” said Ty Stewart, WSOP executive director. “No guarantees were too big. Congratulations to all 18 ring event winners.”

GGPoker made the Super Series an even bigger spectacle

With so many players at home during the Coronavirus pandemic, the Super Series proved a win-win for GG and WSOP.

Much of the headline WSOPC Ring Event action was streamed live on Twitch via GGPoker TV. The channel offers an entertaining, podcast-style show hosted by Joe Stapleton.

The WSOP and GGPoker recently announced a partnership on the new Online Super Series.

GGPoker ambassadors Daniel Negreanu, Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier, Felipe Ramos, and Fedor Holz dropped in on the stream to comment on the action. Maria Ho, David Williams, Matt Berkey, Jesse Sylvia, and Marle Cordeiro also joined the mix.

“Over 500 events, more than 485,000 tournament entries and of course over $134 million in prizes awarded – the GGPoker community fully embraced and supported the WSOP Super Circuit Series,” GG head of business development Jean-Christophe Antoine said.

“It was thrilling to witness all of the action, and to see every single ring event guarantee exceeded was something all players could be happy about.”

The GGPoker action continues in June, with more than $2 million in extra prizes awarded through monthly promotions. The site offers numerous daily tournaments for bankrolls of every level.

Not only has online poker been on the rise during the Coronavirus pandemic, Twitch Poker has also seen an increase in streamers and viewers. PokerStars recently added some extra incentive to get in the action by giving away $50,000.

The site gave away chests worth up to $215 every day to players watching PokerStars streamers. This promotion is part of a growing trend toward the platform over the last few years.

“We’ve always been extremely passionate about Twitch,” associate director of public relations Rebecca McAdam Willetts says. “It allows a true window into the mind of professional players and enables viewers to join in for the ride.

“We will continue to invest in Twitch and our Twitch community. Really, even after years of pushing the boundaries with this platform, we’re only just warming up.”

That sentiment could go for much of the industry as well.

Winning with PokerStars Twitch

To take part in the promotion, viewers had to link their PokerStars and Twitch accounts. They then needed to have their stream chat open while watching a PokerStars-affiliated streamer.

The promotion ran throughout much of the Spring Championship of Online Poker (SCOOP). The goal is to allow players to experience their own winning moments while also watching content produced on Twitch.

Content primarily focuses on online events, including cash games, and European Poker Tour stops. However, Twitch users can also find other streams including:

  • PokerStars School – Providing tips and lessons as well as new game format tutorials. • PokerStars ambassadors GJ and Pye – The pair’s regular dual stream showcases low buy-in events accessible to low-stakes players.

“PokerStars Twitch is the host channel for an abundance of different types of poker content,” Willetts says. “There’s always something on to entertain or educate on our channel and our Twitch audience is very active and engaged. It’s a fun place to be for any poker fan.”

That includes incorporating the PokerStars Twitch channel into the new “Rail” feature. The Rail offers players a personalized online experience and to incorporate some of their own poker interests. Some of those include:

  • Social media
  • PokerStars School
  • Multimedia content
  • Upcoming major events
  • Recent games played
  • Personalized videos
  • Recent big wins
  • Challenges and promotions

The new feature can also incorporate the PokerStars Twitch stream as well as those of site ambassadors. Beyond that, some non-affiliated streamers will also be included.

“It’s a great place for any poker fan to find video content to watch while they play,” Willetts says.

Record breaking poker streaming

PokerStars ambassador Lex Veldhuis streamed much of his action during the SCOOP series. He and fellow ambassadors Fintan Hand and “Spraggy” made impressive runs for viewers on Twitch.

Hand won an event live on stream, and Lex and Spraggy both made the final 40 of the $10,000 SCOOP Main Event. These finishes live on Twitch may be an example of how poker streamers can bring new players and fans to the game.

Veldhuis peaked at 58,0000 viewers, breaking the Twitch record for concurrent viewers on a poker stream. He also briefly reached the top spot watched channel on Twitch, beating 125,000 other streamers.

More viewers, players, and poker sites going to Twitch for poker

Beyond online events, Twitch has become the place for other “live” events as well. PokerStars recently ran its “Stars CALL for Action” celebrity game charity initiative using the platform.

Viewers could tune in and check out the action with a host of big names battling it out. Those checking out the action could also donate themselves to the $1 million Coronavirus relief effort.

In recent years, PokerStars moved beyond its Twitch channel being a standalone offering. The site makes use of content formats, tools, and widgets on the Twitch platform itself for a more immersive experience.

The Twitch channel also facilitates more promotional opportunities to reach out to players. Those linking their accounts can take part in community giveaways and exclusive challenges only available to Twitch viewers.

“Integration is important to us,” Willetts says, “and an area we intend to spend more time on.”

Others in the industry are also focusing on Twitch. Longtime poker pro Jason Somerville was a bit of a pioneer making use of the platform. Jeff Gross and Jaime Staples have also been streaming their action for years.

Both are ambassadors for partypoker, which also makes major use of the platform. Party recently streamed action from the online Super High Roller Bowl.

GGPoker also recently launched its own Twitch channel and hopes to create a following for its tournament series. The World Poker Tour has also made use of its Twitch channel for its new celebrity fundraising game in partnership with Budweiser.

The WPT also spotlights its own ClubWPT sweepstakes poker site on Twitch as does Global Poker.

With growing numbers of viewers and streamers, Twitch remains an important part of the poker world. With the COVID-19 pandemic shutting down major tournament poker, it also remains a nice alternative for fans to find some live poker to watch.

WPT Online Series continue with massive payouts

The big action rolls on this week in the inaugural WPT Online Series. The event continues with $30 million guaranteed in 65 events through May 20.

Buy-ins range from $50 to $25,000 with a mix of No Limit Hold’Em and Pot Limit Omaha tournaments.

The $3,200 WPT Online Championship begins May 10 and comes with  a $5 million guarantee. The main event features four starting flights and the final three days of action begin on May 18.

Like a live WPT event, the champion will also be rewarded with a $15,000 entry to the tour’s Tournament of Champions (presented by Baccarat Crystal).

The WPT and partypoker have teamed up for the new WPT Online Series.

Other highlights include:

  • WPT500 – Another tour level on the schedule with a $2 million guarantee and a $500 buy-in.
  • WPT High Roller – $1 million guaranteed for this $5,000 buy-in.
  • Hardware – Trophies and tour merchandise will be awarded to flagship event champions. Winners also receive a souvenir frame with their winning hand. The Online Championship winner will also receive a replica of the WPT Champions Cup and have his or her name engraved on the main trophy. Winners of the WPT500 and WPTDeepStacks events will also receive trophies.

Champions Club member James Dempsey will provide live commentaries of events streamed on partypokerTV. The events covered on the site’s Twitch channel include the final stages of:

  • WPT500
  • High Roller
  • Super High Roller
  • Online Championship.

On top of the cash prizes, partypoker is awarding more than $50,000 to the top 15 leaderboard performers. Here’s a look at events remaining on the schedule:

WPT adds new online series – biggest partypoker festival yet

The WPT and partypoker continue building on the two companies’ growing partnership. With the WPT Online Series currently underway, they’re again teaming up for the biggest partypoker online series ever.

The WPT World Online Championships will run July 1 to Aug. 9, including 15 championship events. The series is highlighted by the $10,300 buy-in Season XVIII WPT World Championship Online, which runs Aug. 1-8.

Partypoker promises some special prizes for the overall series winner. That includes a $15,000 seat into the Season XVIII WPT Tournament of Champions presented by Baccarat Crystal.

“With the live poker schedule likely to be empty over the traditionally hectic summer months, we have been working on plans for a huge online festival to provide an alternative for players that would normally migrate to Vegas,” partypoker managing director Tom Waters said.

“I’m delighted that we have been able to partner with WPT to revive the WPT World Championships and bring the series online for the first time.”

A full schedule for the WPT World Online Championships hasn’t been released yet. It will be posted in this column when it’s available.

Defection Party promises $2 million in prizes throughout May

Partypoker is giving back to players through June 4 with more than $2 million up for grabs. In the new Defection Party promotion, players can win daily prizes no matter a player’s game of choice or skill level.

By simply logging in every day, players can reveal a new prize. These daily rewards can include freeroll tickets to a $500 daily Hyper Turbo tournament running through the day. Other prizes could include free bonuses credited to a player’s account.

Completing daily challenges also allows players to receive a ticket to a daily $5,000 Hyper Turbo freeroll. These also run every day during the promotion.

Partypoker is also offering another free cash opportunity. Players can boost earnings at the tables by taking advantage of a 20% extra cashback offer through June 4.

Players can opt in  and start earning boosted cashback. The cash will land directly in players’ accounts within 24 hours of the promotional period closing.

The popular Cash Game Leaderboards also offer daily rewards and the promotion has been extended through May. Three types of leaderboards offer players more than $1.3 million in cash and include:

  • Daily Spin Leaderboards
  • Daily SNG Leaderboards
  • Weekly Cash Leaderboards

“We believe in giving back to players,” partypoker marketing director Vadim Soloveychik said. “Corporate greed kills poker, and we want to be the force for good in the game we all love. We give back more than a third of our poker revenue back to players through our cashback program and promotions. This is what we stand for and this is what the Defection Party promotion is all about.”

PokerStars gives big boost to SCOOP guarantees

With big online poker numbers continuing, PokerStars recently boosted its SCOOP guarantees by an additional $10 million. That moved the guaranteed prize pool to $95 million.

That includes a nice boost for low rollers. The Main Event Low guarantee has increased by $500,000, taking it to $3.5 million. The Medium and High Main Events guarantee $5 million each.

The series runs through May 19 with plenty of events for players of every buy-in. That includes more than 80 events among the three buy-in levels.

Along with a full slate of tournaments, PokerStars offers some other opportunities during the series. Some of those promotions include:

  • $5,000 Second Chance Freerolls – These run daily and are given to any player who busts a SCOOP tournament for the first time that day.
  • Special SCOOP Spin & Go’s – These offer Main Event tickets worth $10,300 from as little as $4.
  • Sunday Storm Anniversary Promotion – The first 50,000 players who bust in the Sunday Storm anniversary receive a SCOOP Freeroll ticket.  Tickets to the Medium Main Event will be up for grabs.
  • Player of the Series Leaderboard – Player leaderboards have been altered a bit this year. For the first half, there will be a leaderboard based on player participation and success with winners receiving SCOOP tickets. In the second half, cash prizes will be up for grabs. The overall Player of the Series earns a $20,000 cash prize and SCOOP Trophy.

SCOOP should once again offer some great action. Here’s a look at the complete schedule:

Wheel your way to some cash in new PokerStars cycling game

Players can now bring a bit of the Tour de France to their own poker game as part of the PokerStars Grand Tour.

PokerStars Grand Tour is now available on the .COM platform and will launch on real money soon.
