OH, CANADA: PokerStars Officially Goes Live in Ontario, $1M Series Welcomes Players to Platform

Ontario regulators have approved for PokerStars to operate and the platform officially went live in the Canadian province on Tuesday.

It’s go time for PokerStars players in Ontario, Canada. After reverting to a provincially-regulated market earlier this year, Stars became the latest operator to launch in Ontario on Tuesday.

The company announced that the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) granted the company a full registration to operate.

“In many respects Ontario is our home market, given the first ever hand of PokerStars was played here over 20 years ago, so we are thrilled about the new regulated environment within which our players can play,” PokerStars managing director of marketing Tom Warren said in a news release.

“A lot has changed in that time, but our commitment to offering our players the most epic and thrilling experience in the market hasn’t – and we can’t wait to get started.”

Details on PokerStars’ Ontario launch

Since regulating the market, Ontario players will now find a “ringed-in” environment as seen in most legalized US states. Players will play only against others within that province.

The new legal registration provides for a regulated PokerStars-branded offering for Ontario players. This is a similar setup for Stars players in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Michigan.

The legal registration also authorizes PokerStars’ three verticals of online poker, casino gaming, and sports betting. The new platform features a localized schedule as well.

Online gamers will find more than 5,000 games, poker, blackjack and more. Players will find a seamless in-app and online experience.

Tournament series in the works

Players heading to PokerStars Ontario can already expect some major tournament action with the launch of the new platform. To mark the occasion, the site will host the Ontario Platinum Series from July 10-18 with a $1 million guaranteed prize pool.

“There is much more ahead in Ontario this summer with epic events and experiences in the works for players who join the PokerStars family,” the company noted in announcing the launch. Some of that includes:

  • a new rewards program giving players double rewards throughout July and August
  • a new weekly flagship event known as the New Sunday Major with a $100,000 guaranteed prize pool
  • exclusive with promotions with its gaming partner Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment

For Canadian players outside Ontario, PokerStars will continue to serve these players with the international platform.

PokerStars

The Spring Championship of Online Poker (SCOOP) continues through June 1 at PokerStars. As the action plays out, a few players stand out so far.

Dinesh “NastyMinder” Alt was recently one of the players grabbing a title. The Swiss player is a regular online pro and has scored numerous titles including World COOP, Turbo COOP, Bounty Builder High Roller, and a Sunday Million.

After so much success, Alt now has not one, but two SCOOP titles to add to that string of wins. He first won a $109 SCOOP Sunday Kickoff for $44,887

Alt then turned a $109 Phase entry into an entry into the $5,000 Titans PKO, then winning the event for $230,145. That total included an impressive $157,285 in bounties.

“It felt awesome, especially these high roller tournaments with tough fields, there are so many people I know and respect as very good players, it was definitely awesome,” he told the Stars blog after the Titans win.

“The previous one was a smaller buy-in with more luck involved as the fields are so big and the variance is higher but in the high rollers, it’s more about skill and less variance in the smaller fields.

In other action, PokerStars ambassador Fintan “easywithaces” Hand scored his third SCOOP title in three years. He took down the $2,000 Sunday Warm-Up for $119,046 including $71,820 in bounties. Hand enjoyed quite a celebration after the win:

888poker

The 888poker Live Barcelona series wrapped up on May 23. Poker pros Maria Ho and Dan “Jungleman” Cates made the trip to Spain for the action along with the site’s ambassadors and the 888poker StreamTeam.

Cates made the trip worthwhile, winning the €5,300 Super High Roller for €33,000. In the €2,200 High Roller, Ireland’s James Crawley took the title for €38.000. The UK’s Warren Aspey finished runner-up for €24.000 in a tournament that attracted 63 entries.

The €1,100 Main Event highlighted the series and featured four starting flights. The action included 334 entries for a €320,640 prize pool.

The final table saw five of the nine players hailing from the host country as well as players from the UK, Finland, Italy, and France. In the end, Italy’s Sandro Hauser came out on top for €56,800.

Spain’s Alexandre Ventura Bolet finished runner-up €41,400 after a deal was reached among the top three.

GGPoker, Triton Poker

The Online Poker Championship is underway at GGPoker, running through June 1 with $150 million guaranteed. The company has also partnered with Triton Poker for the tour’s recent Madrid series.

GG offered players online qualifiers for events and some big names have once again made some news. That has included Tom Dwan, who scored two titles in three days. He won the €30,000 Short Deck Turbo and €25,000 Pot Limit Omaha for a total of €626,000.

Australia’s Michael Addamo also has two titles, winning the opening $20,000 NLHE for €478,000 and a €75,000 NLHE event for €1.2 million. Stephen Chidwick and Jason Koon also drvured titles in the series, which wrapped up on Wednesday.

EPT Monte Carlo Wraps Up With First Brazilian Main Event Winner; More Live, Online Events Ahead

The PokerStars EPT Monte Carlo wrapped up on May 7 with Brazil’s Marcelo Mesqueu taking the top spot for €939,840 in the €5,300 Main Event.

The PokerStars European Poker Tour(EPT) Monte Carlo wrapped up on May 7 after two weeks of poker action. The €5,300 Main Event saw Brazil’s Marcelo Mesqueu take the top spot for €939,840.

The 55-year-old from Rio de Janeiro became the first Brazilian to win an EPT main event title. He topped a field of 1,073 entries that produced a €5.2 million prize pool.

The packed series saw players from 67 countries at the Sporting Monte Carlo with €31 million awarded across 48 tournaments. Here’s a quick look at some of the highlights from the series as other events coming up.

French series draws record turnout

Beyond Mesqueu’s big win, the €1,100 France Poker Series (FPS) Main Event was a major part of EPT Monte Carlo as well. That tournament drew 1,918 entries, making it the biggest turnout in the tournament’s history.

Another Brazilian found the winner’s circle in that championship as well. Lucas Scafini took the title, walking away with €250,000 of the €1.8 million prize pool. That total smashed the previous record by more than 27%.

Other Monte Carlo highlights

In other action, PokerStars cultural ambassador Neymar Jr. attended the event. He played in several tournaments and cashed twice in the festival.

Neymar took home €1,110 in the FPS Cup. He then collected €5,620 in the €2,000 FPS High Roller, finishing 55th out of 861 entries.

In the €100,000 Super High Roller, Spaniard Adrian Mateos emerged as champion. He outlasted a 42-entry field and won €1.4 million, the biggest prize of the series. The tournament created a €4.1 million prize pool, with the top six finishers in the money.

PokerStars Ramps Up Opportunities to Win a Platinum Pass; Online & Live Events Unveiled

The PSPC kicks off Jan. 29 in the Bahamas and PokerStars has announced that one final Platinum Pass is up for grabs via a podcast contest.

The battles for a Platinum Pass are about to heat up. PokerStars announced details on how players can get their hands on the coveted prizes on Tuesday.

A Platinum Pass is valued at more than $30,000 for a travel package that includes a $25,000 buy-in to the PokerStars Players Championship (PPC).

The paths to a Platinum Pass launched Tuesday offering players of all levels the opportunity to win. The company is offering both live and online routes to a Platinum Pass and the PPC.

PokerStars ambassador Ramon Colillas won the first PPC via his own pass in 2019. He collected $5.1 million for the win and is happy to see the tournament and promotion return.

“At the PokerStars Players Championship, anything is possible, but you have to get there first,” he said in a news release. “Opportunities don’t just happen, you have to create them and winning a Platinum Pass is the perfect way to make sure that you don’t miss out on this once in a lifetime opportunity.”

PokerStars launches online qualifiers for Platinum Passes

The Platinum Pass launch campaign comes after the company announced the PPC’s return earlier this month. The PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (PCA) also returns to host the event in the Bahamas in January at the Baha Mar resort.

The “PSPC Mega Path” now offers online poker players a chance to win a Platinum Pass and the promotion runs April 26 – Oct. 30. PokerStars is giving players of all levels the opportunity to win a pass every week during that time.

Qualifiers start at just $0.50, giving players the chance to win millions for less than a dollar. To win the pass, players must make their way through different steps. Simply win at one step to earn a ticket for the next stage.

Players can buy in at any level except Step 4. The winner of that final step wins the pass.

Road to PSPC live events also get underway

Along with online qualifiers, PokerStars is also offering plenty of live tournament opportunities to win a Platinum Pass. The “Road to PSPC tour features a host of low buy-in tournaments throughout the year.

A Platinum Pass is up for grabs to the winner of each and the tour kicks off in June. Here’s a look at all the upcoming Road to PSPC stops:

More extras planned for PokerStars players

On top of a full schedule of action, PokerStars promises $1 million in added value through various promotions. The SCOOP Pick-A-Box game offers something new for 2022.

The promotion allows players to pick from one of six boxes a day in a bid to win a SCOOP ticket. Pick-A-Box awards $250,000 worth of tickets each week throughout the series and can be found in the challenges window.

SCOOP leaderboards are also once again part of the mix. These offer $100,000 in cash prizes across four leaderboards: Low, Medium, High, and overall Player of the Series.

Each time a player plays a SCOOP event, he or she earns points based on finishing position. Winners and the Player of the Series receive SCOOP trophies to mark their success.

PokerStars will also offer Fast Track satellites throughout the series with $300,000 up for grabs. Players can qualify for the main events via Fast Track for just $0.50.

These satellites have four steps with four different tournaments to compete in. Players can buy in at any step with Main Event tickets awarded at step four.

If all those promotions weren’t enough, Stars is also running special Special Edition Spin & Go’s during the festival. Players can win SCOOP tickets via $0.50, $4, and $20 Spin & Go’s.

SCOOP once again promises a nice spring for online poker players around the world.

PokerStars, FanDuel Team Up for Partnership Deal With Toronto Maple Leafs Ownership Group

PokerStars and FanDuel announced a new partnership in Ontario, Canada, on Friday with the ownership group of the NHL's Maple Leafs.

PokerStars is teaming up with FanDuel and the two brands announced a new partnership in Ontario, Canada, on Friday. Both companies are part of Flutter Entertainment and announced a deal with Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (MLSE).

The strategic partnership sees FanDuel designated as an official sports betting partner and PokerStars as an official gaming/poker partner.

The agreement brings Ontario poker players and sports bettors a combination of sports, poker, and casino gaming options.

“We have epic plans for our community in Canada, and are excitedly looking forward to creating some incredible experiences in our birth country, when we launch very soon,” PokerStars marketing director Tom Warren said in a news release.

“Partnering with MLSE gives us the opportunity to reach passionate fans across Ontario with a wide remit of poker and casino, heighten experiences wherever we can, and be a part of some major winning moments.”

PokerStars expands into Ontario with move

The deal comes after the Ontario market has shifted from a “grey” market to a regulated market. Online gaming operators have lined up to launch in the province.

PokerStars should be among those operators launching into the region. Ontario now becomes a “fenced-in” environment, meaning online poker players only compete against others in the province.

PokerStars’ Ontario product is expected to be similar to its platforms in the US markets of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Michigan. Those are also ringed-in markets, at least until interstate compacts go into effect.

Linking up with the Leafs

The Ontario partnership is a first of its kind deal for Flutter Entertainment in North America. PokerStars now links up with FanDuel to showcase the two brands in Canada.

As part of the latest deal, PokerStars also becomes a partner with the NHL’s Maple Leafs. Stars and FanDuel gain the use of team marks in advertising and marketing.

The brands will also be featured prominently throughout Leafs and the NBA’s Toronto Raptors games, including rink boards and on-court signage. The partnership allows FanDuel and PokerStars to collaborate on marketing campaigns with all of MLSE’s teams, which include:

  • Maple Leafs
  • Raptors
  • Major League Soccer’s Toronto FC
  • the Canadian Football League’s Toronto Argonauts
  • Toronto Marlies (minor league hockey)

“We are thrilled to partner with Flutter Entertainment, a global leader and one of the most trusted operators in the sports betting industry,” MLSE Senior Vice President of Global Partnerships Jordan Vader said. “As the online gaming markets open in Ontario, we have worked hard to find partners who align with both our vision for innovation, and our values including a shared commitment to responsible gaming.

“We look forward to working with Flutter and providing a platform for them to engage with the millions of (age) 19-plus Ontario residents who are fans of our teams.”

The announcement follows a successful Prague stop on the European Poker Tour (EPT). More stop on that tour is now on the way as well as more regional tour events.

“We have missed our live events as much as our players, so it is our true pleasure to announce the PokerStars Players Championship will take place at Baha Mar in January,”  Stars managing director and commercial officer Severin Rasset said in a news release.

“Beautiful location, hundreds of qualifiers, with millions to win. If there is one tournament to choose for a once-in-a-lifetime experience, it will be the PSPC. We will provide more details soon on how to get your hands on a Platinum Pass – stay tuned!”

PSPC, Platinum Passes return to PokerStars

News of the PSC’s return may be the biggest part of Friday’s announcement. Stars ran the first event in 2019, giving away hundreds of Platinum Passes along the way.

These entitled winners to a $30,000 travel package that included a $25,000 buy-in for the event.

The tournament saw 1,039 entries for a $26.5 million prize pool. Spain’s Ramon Colillas cashed in on a Platinum Pass and won the tournament for $5.1 million.

The COVID pandemic delayed the second event, which was originally planned for Barcelona. PokerStars now moves that event back to the Bahamas with the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (PCA) also returning.

The PCA heads to the Bahamas from Jan. 22 – Feb. 3 at the new location of the Baha Mar. The PSPC will again be part of the action, running Jan. 30 – Feb. 3.

As in the run up to the first PSPC, the company plans on handing out more Platinum Passes to online poker players and poker fans around the world.

“Players can come together for this unique event,” PokerStars notes, “to enjoy the winter sunshine and kick off 2023 at what PokerStars plans to be an unforgettable celebration and an even bigger and better PSPC, with hundreds of Platinum Pass winners set to attend.”

More PokerStars EPT events on tap

PokerStars also outlined more events in the announcement including the EPT heading to Barcelona and Prague again this year. EPT Barcelona runs Aug. 8-21 at the Casino Barcelona.

The series features plenty of tournaments to choose from including a €1,100 ESPT event and €5,300 Main Event.

Additionally, EPT Prague plays out Dec. 7-18 at King’s Casino in Czech Republic. Players can expect a full slate of tournaments including a €5,300 Main Event from Dec. 12-18.

A Eureka Tour €1,100 Main Event is also planned for Dec. 8-12. Players can win their way to these events via online qualifiers. Satellites are running for free on the site or jump in a qualifier for as little as €1.10. These are expected to start soon.

Regional tour action ramping up; Dublin, Malta events planned

PokerStars also plans the return of some of its regional tours and offered more details on Friday.

After six years, PokerStars UKIPT (United Kingdom and Ireland Poker Tour) returns to Dublin from May 16-22 at the Bonnington Hotel. Online satellites for these events start today for as little as €1.10.

Also, for the first time PokerStars will sponsor a Summer Poker Festival running from June 18-26 in Malta. The series’ Main Event will be a joint UKIPT and ESPT event. The company plans to release more online satellite information for these series soon.
