EPT Online Roundup: ‘WhatIfGod’ Earns Back-to-Back Main Event Titles; More Players Win Big

The EPT Online wrapped up recently at PokerStars with Sweden’s “WhatIfGod” winning his second straight $5,200 EPT Online Main Event.

The EPT Online wrapped up recently at PokerStars after 72 tournaments and offering players a total guarantee of $50 million. The highlight of the series saw Sweden’sWhatIfGod” win his second straight $5,200 EPT Online Main Event.

The godlike performance by the 2020 winner brought a $363,641 payday after topping a field of 402 entries. Here’s a look at that event and some of the other action from the series.

Back-to-back Main Event wins for ‘WhatIfGod’

Winning back-to-back titles is no easy feat and WhatIfGod dominated the tournament virtually from the beginning. The final table was streamed on the PokerStars YouTube and Twitch channels with hole cards up.

Players battled for a share of the $2 million prize pool, which was shared by the top 48 finishers. WhatIfGod entered the final table third in chips, but quickly gained the chip lead. That included eliminating PokerStars ambassador Benjamin “bencb789” Rolle in seventh place.

The Swede added to his stack by also knocking out Bruno “great dant” Volkmann (sixth) and Christian “WATnlos” Rudolph (third). That led to heads-up play against Stars ambassador and 2019 PokerStars Player Championship winner Ramon Colillas.

River cards twice kept Colillas in the match. WhatIfGod eventually completed the repeat victory when he made a backdoor flush. He raised all in on the river and Colillas called with two pairs for his remaining chips. Here’s a look at the final table payouts.

EPT Online 2021 Main Event final table results:

  1. WhatIfGod (Sweden) – $363,641
  2. Ramon Colillas (Andorra) – $276,741
  3. WATnlos (Austria) – $210,608
  4. Oxota (Canada) – $160,279
  5. Eduardo850 (Brazil) – $121,977

  7. Benjamin Rolle (Austria) – $70,645
  8. OrpTheTurk (United Kingdom) – $53,763
  9. Pvigar (Brazil) – $41,259

This wasn’t the only title for WhatIfGod in the EPT Online. He also scored the top spot in a $1,050 Turbo PKO as well. That event saw him an additional $80,503 including $39,400 from bounties.

“We wanted to give our players a seamless and interesting way to improve and learn. When people are improving and progressing their skills, they generally enjoy the experience more and this is great for the game. This is the first large-scale, consumer-facing use of artificial intelligence for online poker and we are truly excited to bring this to our players who get the benefit of learning from Lex and one of the most sophisticated tools in online gaming.”

PokerStars offers players their own virtual mentor

The new feature allows players to have their own virtual poker coach with Veldhuis offering some guidance.

“Lex Veldhuis provides clear, simple and personalized poker advice videos based on a player’s real money Spin & Go game, helping to improve their skills in a safe environment and create more winning moments,” PokerStars notes of Level Up with Lex.

Veldhuis’s tips focus on improvement and education and the entire concept comes after quite a bit of work for PokerStars. Each piece of advice is based on data generated by the site’s proprietary machine learning platform.

The technology reads and analyzes hand histories to detect mistakes. For example if a player struggles with playing on the button, that player might have advice on being more aggressive in that spot.

Each piece of advice is therefore correct and true to that individual player’s actions at the table.

PokerStars officials say the company recognized and invested in the potential of machine learning early on. The site’s proprietary technologies have been active for some time and play a key role in site security.

This technology allows Stars to police poker tables to protect the integrity of the game and ensure a level playing field. The goal is to enhance the customer experience and the Level Up feature now expands the use of this technology.

The personalized videos can be created by opting in on “The Rail” in the PokerStars client. The videos can then be viewed there or received via email or push notification. Players can select their own communication preferences in the settings area.

A quick look at Lex

Those taking advantage of “Level Up with Lex” will receive advice from someone with some real skins on the wall. Veldhuis is one of the most well-known and successful players in poker and has the most popular poker stream on Twitch.

Online, the Dutch poker pro has scored big in major tournaments like the Spring Championship of Online Poker (SCOOP) and the World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP).

In 2020, Veldhuis’s Twitch stream reached a personal record of 58,543 concurrent viewers watching his SCOOP Main Event High run. He also has $687,955 in the live poker arena as well.

The new skill-building service now adds yet another interesting aspect to his poker resumé.

“Level Up With Lex aims to help the PokerStars community develop their skills in a unique way and I’m proud to be part of this innovation,” Veldhuis said.

“Learning poker strategy as a beginner can be challenging as there’s so many resources out there. But Level Up With Lex gives clear and simple advice that’s easy to take on board, meaning players get the most out of their time at the tables. It’s taken a lot of hard work and effort and I’m looking forward to seeing players benefitting from this technology.”

New Dates Announced for EPT Prague; PokerStars Launches EPT Online With $17 Million Guaranteed

The EPT Online wrapped up recently at PokerStars with Sweden’s “WhatIfGod” winning his second straight $5,200 EPT Online Main Event.

After the recent postponement of the European Poker Tour Prague, PokerStars announced new dates for the series on Monday. The site also unveiled the return of the EPT Online series for Dec. 8-19, with $17 million guaranteed.

The news of the EPT Prague comes as live poker slowly returns internationally. The series is now set for March 5-16 at the Hilton Hotel Prague.

“With player and staff comfort and health a top priority, PokerStars had previously made the decision to postpone EPT Prague 2021 due to the ongoing situation in the Czech Republic and in accordance with local government guidance,” Stars officials noted in a news release.

“After much consideration, the decision has now been made to move the much-loved EPT stop to March, where PokerStars hopes to run a safe and enjoyable event for the PokerStars community.”

EPT Online returns to PokerStars

Following the Prague postponement, PokerStars has worked hard to provide players with some online EPT action. Buy-ins for the series start at just $5.50 and players from around the world can compete.

The festival features 68 tournaments including some from the traditional live EPT series. Players will also find mini versions of numerous events with a complete mini schedule.

As seen in live events as well, 20 EPT trophies will be up for grabs. Some of the highlights from the series include:

  • $11 EPT Online Cup Mini – $150,000 guaranteed
  • $55 Mini Main Event – $1 million guaranteed
  • $5,200 Main Event – $1.5 million guaranteed
  • $1,050 Return of Arena Championship – $1 million guaranteed
  • $10,300 Sunday Super High Roller – $1 million guaranteed

EPT Online also benefits tournament staff

Because of the postponement of the live EPT Prague, PokerStars hopes to help out staff missing work opportunities. The company has committed $100,000 from the series to all the live event staff impacted by the postponement.

“We know that there is a huge demand from the PokerStars community to see our live events return in full and we are excitedly working toward that,” PokerStars managing director and commercial officer Severin Rasset said, “but we must be flexible along the way to ensure our players stay safe and healthy, and the experience is an unforgettable one for all the right reasons.

“I am pleased that we have been able to adapt so quickly to the ever-changing situation and provide our players with new dates for EPT Prague already, as well as some EPT online fun and value in the meantime. A big thanks to our partners at Kings Casino and Hilton Prague for working with us to ensure we found an alternative solution for the event.”

PokerStars Roundup: Ambassadors Reflect on Big Moments; Partners With ‘Missing People’ Charity

The Big 20 Rewind series continues at PokerStars and some of the site's American ambassadors offered some of their own memorable moments.

The Big 20 Rewind series continues this week at PokerStars with some massive prizes still on the line. The festival celebrates Stars’ 20th anniversary and concludes on Saturday.

Several players have notched some big wins over the last week. As part of the series, PokerStars ambassadors recently offered some insight into their favorite moments through the company’s first 20 years.

The site’s American ambassadors also recently offered some of their favorite moments as the “2016 – Year of the USA” tournament approached. That event is set for Nov. 30 with a $200,000 guarantee and an all-expenses-paid trip to New York also going to the winner.

In other news, PokerStars also announced a new charity initiative. Here’s a look at some of the events going on at Stars.

US ambassadors reflect on memorable PokerStars moments

As part of the Big 20 Rewind, PokerStars ambassadors have reflected on their favorite moments from the online poker company. The American ambassadors were the latest to offer their special memories.

Poker and chess pro Jen Shahade recently spoke about winning her first live tournament package via PokerStars. She remembers the entire trip as a life-changing experience.

“It was probably the first time I won a package to play in the PCA (PokerStars Caribbean Adventure) about 11 years ago,” she recalled. “It was my dream to go to one of those amazing EPT spots, but at the time I had just started my chess non-profit, so a satellite was my only way in.

“I remember screaming in excitement when I won the seat and having the absolute best time in the Bahamas. Not only did I learn a lot about poker, but the experience also introduced me to the amazing culture of poker and I made some lifelong friends, like Jamie Kerstetter, on that very trip.”

Returning to the US market

For Pennsylvania’s Keith Becker, PokerStars launching in Pennsylvania remains one of his favorite moments. Along with the Keystone State, the company now offers legal online poker in New Jersey and Michigan.

“In 2019, I was overjoyed to see an article come across my feed that PokerStars was finally launching in Pennsylvania on Nov. 4,” he says. “PokerStars coming to Pennsylvania changed my life, from participating in the ‘DareToStream’ competition, meeting my dual stream partner DareToStream, and now of course, I’m proud to call myself an ambassador for PokerStars here in the States.”

Even before he became a brand representative, Becker remembers following all the big PokerStars action online.

“Over the last 20 years, many of my favorite moments have been watching the streams of the EPT and other marquee live tournaments, with commentary from the inimitable James Hartigan and Joe Stapleton,” he says. “It leads to amazing moments like this incredible hero call from Erik Seidel: never miss this incredible coverage!”

Foresta also spoke about EPT coverage as his memorable highlight.

“One of my favourite moments in PokerStars history has to be the EPT Monte Carlo final table (see below),” he said. “This final table was completely stacked with amazing personalities and unbelievably strong players. This final table will go down in history as my favorite broadcast I have ever watched.”

PokerStars teams up with Missing People for #togetherformissing campaign

Every 90 seconds, someone goes missing in the United Kingdom. To raise awareness of the support available and to help reunite families with loved ones, the Missing People charity has teamed with PokerStars UK

Flutter Entertainment has partnered to support the group’s work with missing adults and their families. The partnership utilizes the collective reach of Paddy Power, Betfair, Sky Bet, and PokerStars UK to raise awareness and boost the charity’s campaigns.

Missing People is the only UK charity dedicated to bringing the 170,000 children and adults that go missing every year back together with their families.

The groups launched a campaign video at a media event on Nov. 17 at London’s Hippodrome Casino. Guests viewed the new campaign video and heard from the parents of Anthony Stammers, missing since 2012.

The evening included a poker event for media and guests. PokerStars also donated £100 to Missing People for every player at the Hippodrome playing in the PokerStars Mega Series on the same day.

“It was a real delight to gather at the Hippodrome with the incredible attendees from Missing People, who work endlessly to help reunite loved ones,” Flutter group head of corporate giving Sue Hammett said in a news release. “We were honored to have the Stammers family with us who were brave enough to share their story.

“This had an impact on everyone in the room and highlighted even further the importance of supporting Missing People. This is another important step in our relationship with Missing People and we hope that our support will continue to help reunite families across the UK.”

Helping those in need

In 2020, Missing People saw more than 700 adults reported missing found safe and well. Flutter seeded the #TogetherforMissing partnership with a £150,000 donation to support the group over the year.

PokerStars UK has also launched a new deck of cards which are “missing” Kings, Queens, and Jacks> These cards instead display the Missing People helpline number for anyone needing support.

“Missing People is pleased to have the opportunity to work with Flutter to help reach an adult audience at high risk of going missing – men aged 18-39,” Missing People CEO Jo Youle said.

“Our support exists for any missing person, every day of the year. Through this partnership we will also be able to highlight adults who are missing. We know opportunities like this to get the message out means so much for families of missing people that the charity supports.”
