RAISING THE STAKES: World Series of Poker Offers Online Bracelets Via GGPoker, WSOP.com

The WSOP and GGPoker have announced a new summer online bracelet series.

Whether in Europe, Asia, or somewhere else around the world, poker players can compete for a World Series of Poker bracelet this summer. The series announced a partnership with GGPoker on Monday, offering 85 bracelet events internationally and on WSOP.com in the US.

The “WSOP Online” includes WSOP.com offering 31 events July 1-31 with GG events getting started on July 19. This becomes the first time players outside the US will be able to play for a bracelet online.

The annual live series in Las Vegas has been postponed until the fall because of the Coronavirus pandemic. Organizers hope the WSOP Online helps bridge a gap as players await the return of live tournament poker.

“It wouldn’t be summer without WSOP” series executive director Ty Stewart said in a news release.

“While we are thrilled to be reopening our venues and optimistic about future offline events, we couldn’t be more excited about deepening our relationship with GGPoker and watching some history unfold online this summer.”

What to expect from GGPoker WSOP events

The Coronavirus pandemic has led to a mini-boom in online poker with massive prize pools around the world. That included the recent GGPoker WSOP Super Online Circuit Series.

That series was the first partnership between the two entities. The series awarded 18 championship rings and featured more than 500 events. Those offered buy-ins for every bankroll and numerous game variations.

The Super Series originally promised a massive guarantee of $102 million, but paid out almost $135 million. The series featured 485,851 entries including a Main Event of almost 10,000 entries with $1.2 million to the winner.

“With over $100 million in guarantees during the WSOPC Super Series in May and more than $134 million in awarded prizes, it’s clear that GGPoker and the WSOP make a good pair,” GG head of poker operations Steve Preiss said.

“We’re excited to create bracelet events that the worldwide poker community will embrace, as well as innovative programming with PokerGo.”

WSOP and GGPoker promise a similar schedule with numerous events, game types, and buy-ins. The GG events for international players kick off on July 19 and run through Sept. 6.

GGPoker plans to unveil its bracelet schedule on a rolling basis, WSOP officials said. GG hasn’t announced any events yet.

Players can expect numerous qualifiers and starting flights as seen in the Super Series. The WSOP Online should be another massive event for the site.

“There’s nothing in the world like winning a WSOP bracelet,” GGPoker ambassador Daniel Negreanu said. “Bringing this experience online will open the door for a new generation of poker players to feel the rush of competing for the game’s biggest prize.”

WSOP.com also hosting online bracelet tournaments in the US

Players in the US have a lot to look forward to as part of the deal as well. WSOP.com will offer 31 events, one each day from July1-31.

In the US, WSOP.com is available in Nevada and New Jersey. The site is promising several special promotions with satellites starting as low as $1.

WSOP.com will also throw in an extra $100,000 for the series leaderboard awards. GGPoker may offer a similar leaderboard, but that hasn’t been announced yet.

Like the summer WSOP, the series plans on keeping events in the news. Poker Central, the series’ official production partner, plans to create original content around the festival utilizing its Las Vegas studio. That includes:

  • live streams
  • highlight packages
  • program episodes earmarked for traditional television distribution.

Poker Central also plans to stream virtual bracelet ceremonies and interviews with bracelet winners. There should be plenty of action and PokerScout will continue to track the series as well. Here’s a look at the complete WSOP.com schedule:

GGPoker WSOP Super Circuit Series Smashes Guarantee with $134 Million Awarded

The GGPoker WSOP Super Series smashed the $102 million guarantee.

The first international World Series of Poker online series proved to be a major success. After 500 events, including 18 championship ring tournaments, players in the WSOP Super Circuit Series took home $134.7 million.

That vastly exceeded the original $102 million guarantee. The series was held in partnership with GGPoker and wrapped up on March 31.

GG officials said the festival exceeded expectations and that certainly showed in the series’ prize and players pools.

GGPoker WSOP Super Series produces massive numbers

After the partnership announcement in April, the series became something new for both operators. The WSOP.com Super Series has proven popular with players in New Jersey and Nevada.

The GGPoker deal allowed the WSOP to offer the online series to an international audience. As one of the fastest-growing poker sites in the world, GG ramped up the action with massive events and player pools.

GG hosting the series ensured players throughout the globe could play in WSOPC ring events, satellites, and other events. This offered their first opportunity to play in a WSOP tournament.

Here’s a look at some statistics from the series:

  • Number of events – 516
  • Total guaranteed prize pool of all events – $102,365,000
  • Total prizes awarded – $134,706,274
  • Single biggest event prize pool – $12,372,500 (WSOPC Ring Event #8: High Roller Championship $10 million guaranteed)
  • Total number of entries – 485,851
  • Largest number of entries in a single event – 29,357 (WSOPC Ring Event #9: Mini Main Event)

The series also included a major charity tournament, which have been popular recently. The first ring event was a fundraiser for COVID-19 relief and raised $177,045.

“The support of the gaming community for the WSOPC on GGPoker was insane,” said Ty Stewart, WSOP executive director. “No guarantees were too big. Congratulations to all 18 ring event winners.”

GGPoker made the Super Series an even bigger spectacle

With so many players at home during the Coronavirus pandemic, the Super Series proved a win-win for GG and WSOP.

Much of the headline WSOPC Ring Event action was streamed live on Twitch via GGPoker TV. The channel offers an entertaining, podcast-style show hosted by Joe Stapleton.

The WSOP and GGPoker recently announced a partnership on the new Online Super Series.

GGPoker ambassadors Daniel Negreanu, Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier, Felipe Ramos, and Fedor Holz dropped in on the stream to comment on the action. Maria Ho, David Williams, Matt Berkey, Jesse Sylvia, and Marle Cordeiro also joined the mix.

“Over 500 events, more than 485,000 tournament entries and of course over $134 million in prizes awarded – the GGPoker community fully embraced and supported the WSOP Super Circuit Series,” GG head of business development Jean-Christophe Antoine said.

“It was thrilling to witness all of the action, and to see every single ring event guarantee exceeded was something all players could be happy about.”

The GGPoker action continues in June, with more than $2 million in extra prizes awarded through monthly promotions. The site offers numerous daily tournaments for bankrolls of every level.

Extending the WSOP brand

With so many players at home during the Coronavirus pandemic, numbers have been way up for online poker operators. That goes for WSOP.com in the US, and the GGPoker agreement allows the series to expand its reach internationally.

“GGPoker just seriously raised the bar,” WSOP executive director Ty Stewart said. “We’re tremendously proud to see that GGPoker’s first international WSOPC series will sit among the biggest online events of all time.”

Like traditional WSOP Circuit events, the Super Series offers two seats for the WSOP $1 million freeroll Global Casino Championship. The tournament is an official bracelet event and seats go to the Main Event and player of the series winners.

Players can qualify for all events via satellite tournaments for a shot at a ring for a low buy-in. The series offers plenty of action for players around the world.

The WSOP recently announced that the annual summer series in Las Vegas had been postponed to fall. However, series officials noted that online events would be run this summer. That could include even more international events as well with online partners.

Where can you play GGPoker?

GGPoker has been one of the fastest-growing online poker sites over the last few years. The site regularly ranks among the top 5 sites in terms of traffic and is known for massive prize pool guarantees.

The recent GGSeries wrapped up on April 26 and featured $50 million in total guaranteed prize pools. The WSOP series now has promised to double that total.

GGPoker is available in numerous jurisdictions and a few of those larger countries include:

BIG DEAL: GGPoker, WSOP Agreement Brings New Super Circuit Online Series

The WSOP and GGPoker recently announced a partnership on the new Online Super Series.

GGPoker continued its growth as a global brand by announcing a new deal with the World Series of Poker on Wednesday. The two companies will now partner on the new WSOP Super Circuit Online Series.

The series debuts in May and is expected to play out over three weeks with hundreds of events. Highlighting the schedule will be 18 WSOP Circuit championship ring tournaments.

“I’m thrilled to reveal that GGPoker will be hosting the WSOP Super Circuit Online Series in partnership with World Series of Poker,” head of GGPoker Jean-Christophe Antoine said.

“A GGPoker and WSOP partnership brings together two like-minded global organizations, and I can’t wait to see GGPoker players competing for WSOP Circuit rings online.”

A look at the GGPoker/WSOP Super Series

Players around the world will be pleased to see more major action coming online during the Coronavirus pandemic. The WSOP Circuit was forced to cancel several events because of the virus.

Online rounders now have a chance to battle online for a championship gold ring. The full tournament schedule will be announced at a later date.

WSOP officials were pleased with the deal and seeing the series launched on such a growing brand.

“We’re thrilled to partner with an operator on the rise who is both aggressive and passionate about growing poker engagement around the world,” WSOP executive director Ty Stewart said in a news release.

“It was unfortunate that we were forced to cancel so many offline WSOP Circuit events this spring, but with vast reach GGPoker plans to dwarf the prize pools of the suspended events all at once in one truly Super WSOP Circuit.”

What to expect from WSOP, GGPoker events

In March, WSOP.com held its own Online Super Series with a $1.24 million guarantee. That total was smashed, however, with more players at home and looking to play online. The series ended with more than $3.9 million awarded to players.

Numerous big-names also got in on the action. It’s a good bet that may continue with the GG series.

The GGPoker Super Series should easily shatter that US event total with players around the globe able to play. GG players can also qualify for events in satellites throughout the series.

Beyond that, the Super Circuit also offers a chance to qualify for the $1 million guaranteed WSOP Global Casino Championship. Winners of the Main Event and player of the series leaderboard earn free entries into the popular bracelet event.

GGPoker continues growing and making news

As a growing international site with significant reach, the new GG series brings more momentum for the site. GGPoker regularly ranks among the top five in the world in site traffic.

The Super Series also adds to its growing slate of events. The site is currently running the GGSeries through April 26, with a massive $50 million in guaranteed prize pool.

The series includes an ongoing $300,000 leaderboard and features numerous daily events in four tiers:

  • Low
  • Mid
  • High
  • High Rollers

GG also continues to offer huge Sunday GGMasters tournament guarantees. The events feature a $150 buy-in, a $300,000 guarantee, and a freezeout format.

In March, the site also restructured its Sunday lineup with 174 tournaments with $2 million in guarantees.

GG ambassador Daniel Negreanu comments on WSOP deal

Some of the biggest news for GGPoker came in November when it added six-time WSOP bracelet winner Daniel Negreanu. As the site’s ambassador, he sees the announcement as a huge opportunity for the brand.

“The WSOP is the most prestigious brand in poker dating back to 1970,” he told PokerScout. “Anytime you can be in a partnership with the WSOP, that’s a great opportunity and I was thrilled to see GGPoker partner with them.

“How does this help the WSOP? Well, I strongly believe that GGPoker offers the best software and player experience you’ll find anywhere online. Especially the mobile client which is in a league of its own.”

The poker star believes that quality software and efforts at keeping fun in the game add to GG’s growing popularity.

“Since signing with GGPoker I’ve had countless industry insiders, Twitch streamers, and casual players rave about the playing experience and the software,” Negreanu says.

“The goal was always to make the game fun and engaging with all the bells and whistles that help accomplish that. Whether it’s squeezing your cards or rabbit hunting, the focus is always on fun.”

Irish Poker Open plays out online

The Irish Poker Open will now run the entire festival online from April 6-12. The Main Event on April 6 features a €1 million guarantee.

The good news about the online festival is that it will be available to players in all countries on the .COM site.

“Since our announcement last week regarding the postponement of Irish Open 2020, considerable efforts have been made to find an alternative date,” organizer JP McCann said in a news release. “However, as the uncertainty surrounding live poker events continues, we feel that the best decision to take at this point is to cancel the live festival for 2020.

“We would like to thank partypoker for taking the initiative to help ensure Europe’s oldest running Poker Festival goes ahead during these very challenging times.”

Swap Hold’em debuts

PokerStars will soon be offering a new twist on Texas Hold’em. The new cash game variant, Swap Hold’em, is now available at PokerStars.

Swap rules are almost identical to Texas Hold’em. However, before players have the option to fold they can swap out one or both of their hole cards for new ones. Players can swap once per hand, at any point pre- or post-flop.

Players can see which players swapped their cards and how many by looking at the swap icon by each player’s avatar. If a player does swap, they can see the cards they held originally by hovering over their own swap icon.

Swap Hold’em is the latest limited-time cash game from PokerStars. It’s currently available on the .UK and .NET sites and will soon be available on .COM, .EU, .BE, and .EE.

What to expect from this year’s WSOP

The WSOP is set for May 26 to July 15 this summer. Series officials have been releasing events over the last few weeks including 14 online events.

888poker partners with WSOP.com in the US in Nevada and New Jersey. Players will have a chance to play for a gold bracelet in both states.

Online events range in buy-in from $400 to $10,000. In New Jersey, 888poker NJ also offers its own online poker experience for players in the Garden State.

The 2020 WSOP schedule also includes a slate of events dubbed the High Roller Series. There are also numerous $1,500 events with new leaderboards planned for both series of events.

The Crazy Eights is set to begin June 26 with one re-entry allowed per flight. 888poker ambassador Vivian Saliba finished fourth for $308,888.

The event featured 10,185 entries for an $8.1 million prize pool. California’s Rick Alvarado won the top prize and took home $888,888.

In total, 888poker sent more than 100 qualifiers to the WSOP in 2019. Of those, 17 cashed in the Main Event for just over $1 million. Some of the top 888poker finishers were these Canadians:

  • Dean Morrone – 159th place for $59,295
  • Sam Greenwood – 45th place for $211,945

888 is hoping to send a big group of players again for the action in 2020. Maybe someone will even top those finishes this year. Qualifiers continue online, players can get in the game and book that trip to Vegas.

Geolocation Bug Could Leave Some WSOP Players Out of Action

A geolocation bug may leave some Mac users out of action at WSOP.com.

Players on WSOP.com may want to put that new Macbook purchase or software upgrade on hold. The latest operating system is causing geolocation issues where some players may not be able to play.

Some New Jersey and Nevada residents received an email on Oct. 8 from the WSOP Support Operations Management Team. The message read:

You have been identified as having accessed WSOP.com from a MAC device within the last 6 months. Please be advised that the release of the latest version of Mac OS, Catalina (10.15) was recently deployed and may affect your accessibility to our platform. If you upgrade or upgraded to Catalina (10.15) you may be unable to be geo-located even if you are located within the jurisdiction that allows online gaming due to a Mac OS bug.”

Mac OS Catalina (10.15), the operating system for Apple desktop and Macbooks, was released Oct. 7.  This is the 16th major release for the platform.

What’s the problem affecting poker players?

The geolocation technology issue isn’t just a WSOP.com problem. Other online casinos have reported similar issues.

On Oct. 9, a similar email was sent to NJ customers from Golden Nugget Casino identifying the same bug. Even though the site doesn’t have a poker site, this may affect online casino players. The Golden Nugget noted to customers:

“The market wide geolocation technology partner is currently working as quickly as possible on a fix to work around Apple’s handling of geolocation information through a browser, which abruptly caused this bug to manifest.”

Golden Nugget offered these recommendations for users:

  • Refrain from updating to Mac OS 10.15 Catalina until the issue can be resolved.
  • For those who have already updated, the company advised using mobile or Windows OS devices to play.

Those don’t leave a lot of options for NJ players with the software upgrade.

A poorly timed, unexpected frustration

Geolocation allows online betting platforms to make sure a player is within the state. New Jersey, Delaware, and Nevada sites use a company called GeoComply for this service.

Geolocation is similar to GPS that can pinpoint a player’s coordinates using an IP address and nearby wifi signals.

NJ recreational poker player Ross Gottlieb plays on a Mac and is planning accordingly so he can keep playing.

“I’m just not going to do the update for as long as possible,” he said.

The timing is not great for many players. WSOP.com is currently running its Fall Online Poker Championships through Oct. 20. The event features a total of $1 million in guarantees.

Macs make up about 10% of the PC market share.  It remains to be seen what effect this bug will have on the series’ player pool.

WSOP.com Tests New Jersey Poker Market With A Big Buy-In Tournament

WSOPcom

There was a glimmer of hope as New Jersey online poker showed signs of growth outlined in our last report on Nov. 21. In this recap, the darkness returned — well, mostly.

Actually, there are quite a few positive points to report from the last few weeks. Additionally, some exciting industry news may trickle into the Garden State and provide a much-needed boost to the online poker industry in 2019.

Regular readers of this report are fully aware of the struggles facing New Jersey’s online poker market.

We reached out to Bill Rini, Head of Online Poker at Caesars Entertainment, and asked about the challenges of trying to grow in a struggling market.

“The biggest challenge every operator faces is having the right offering for a constantly evolving market. There’s a constant tweaking process that goes on, experimenting, doing more of what works, and less of the stuff that doesn’t, to keep the lineup exciting and engaging for players.

“For instance, we’re going to be announcing the 2019 WSOP schedule soon, and we think players will be really excited by what we have to offer both online as well as at the Rio this summer.”

WSOP.com definitely experimented when they offered a $1,000 buy-in on Nov. 25. We will talk more about that a little later, but in short, the experiment paid off.

For now, though, let’s take a closer look at the key stories from the US regulated poker scene for the past two weeks:

  • WSOP.com posted its lowest seven-day rolling average number of cash game players since shared liquidity
  • Pokerstars NJ, on the other hand, posted its highest average number of cash game players
  • partypoker NJ also posted an increase in average cash game players for the first time in three months

Now, let’s take a look back at the tournament and cash game trends for the two-week period ending Dec. 2, 2018.

U.S. Regulated Online Poker Operators

The major U.S. poker operators are:

Operator Network Provider Other Sites in the Network

Operator Network Provider Other Sites in the Network
WSOP.com 888 888poker
PokerStarsNJ PokerStars None
partypokerNJ partypoker Borgata Poker and PlayMGM-NJ

Pala Poker also operates in New Jersey on its own network. We do not include Pala Poker in this report because the traffic volume is low and doesn’t affect the latest US online poker trends.

Major online poker tournaments summary

As mentioned earlier, WSOP.com ran a $1,000 buy-in tournament on Nov. 25. Bigger buy-in tournaments are more common on the global stage than in the New Jersey market. In the Garden State, $500 seems to be on the higher end for its players.

WSOP.com took the opportunity to test a larger amount for its monthly big-buy-in tournament. We asked Rini about the decision:

“We’ve seen some interest in higher buy-in tournaments during some of our previous tournament series. There are a lot of players that like the higher buy-in and smaller player pools than an event like our $100K Sundays so we try to have a robust selection of tournaments to play in.”

The guarantee was lower than its regular Sunday major, only $50,000, but that makes sense for the buy-in. In the end, the tournament attracted 99 entries (63 players plus 36 re-entries) generating a $91,200 prize pool. On the surface, it appears the experiment was a success.

In contrast, Pokerstars NJ took the opposite approach by offering a half-priced buy-in. The online poker site ran the $100 Half-Priced Sunday Special with a guaranteed prize pool of $30,000. The tournament resulted in the largest number of entries the poker room has seen in seven months.

And that is where the good news stops. Overall, the total Sunday majors drew the fewest entries the market has seen since Sept.

Sunday major online tournaments by the numbers

Information for the tournaments held on Sunday, Nov. 25, 2018:

WSOP $1,000 Monthly Sunday $50,000 Guaranteed 99 $50,000 $91,200 $41,200
PokerStarsNJ $100 Half-Priced Sunday Special $30,000 Guaranteed 391 $30,000 $35,893.80 $5,893.80
partypokerNJ $215 Sunday NLH $35,000 Guaranteed 160 $35,000 $32,000 -$3,000

Information for the tournaments held on Sunday, Dec. 2, 2018:

partypokerNJ $215 Sunday NLH $35,000 Guaranteed 159 $35,000 $31,800 -$3,200

Average cash game and peak traffic summary

The cash game side of online poker looks pretty similar to the tournament sides of things. Some individual wins, but overall, the market took a hit.

PokerStars NJ walks away as the biggest winner of the week posting a seven-day rolling average of 100 cash game players. That is the highest average the site has seen since we began regularly tracking the data in May.

partypoker NJ added about five players to its seven-day rolling average, bringing it up to 50. It has been at an average of 45 cash game players since the beginning of Sept.

WSOP.com seems to have gifted their competition with some players this holiday season. It posted a seven-day rolling average of only 110 cash game players. That is by far the lowest figure it has seen since May.

Looking at the charts since the launch of shared liquidity, there is a definite downward trend across all three major online poker sites.

Peak traffic continues to do its own thing. One notable item is that WSOP.com and PokerStars NJ had a few days where peak traffic took a severe dip. The dips occurred on different days, but both were significant and something we hadn’t seen before.

The trend lines still show a better story than the average cash game players trend does. Unfortunately, that doesn’t hold true for partypoker NJ. It is the only operator to show a declining trend in peak traffic.

Factors impacting U.S. regulated online poker in the coming weeks

If history were to repeat itself, online poker would maintain the status quo until we emerge from the holidays. That means there will likely be no big wins and no big losses for a few weeks.

That doesn’t mean there is nothing out there worth watching. On Nov. 28, the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) approved PokerStars petition for a PA interactive gaming license. Don’t get too excited, though, combining player pools between the two states is a long way off.

That doesn’t mean New Jersey online poker won’t stand to benefit in some way. PA launching online poker in the first few months of 2019 will likely bring some new players to the online poker scene.

Just like New Jersey sports betting sees some traffic from its neighbor, online poker might as well.

It stands to reason that new PA poker players might also gravitate to the Garden State when a big prize is on the line. It will be hard to stay away if New Jersey is hosting popular tournaments, like Online Circuit or Gold Bracelet events and PA isn’t.

Additionally, poker players might be more likely to fire up their NJ client when placing a sports bet on a big game while in the luxury of their favorite sportsbook.

And finally, maybe, just maybe, the excitement around poker launching in another state will get New Jersey poker players excited about poker again.

We will keep an eye on that, and other news affecting the New Jersey poker scene, and the complete U.S. regulated online poker landscape. We will see you back here on Dec. 18.
