The events make clear the WSOP\u2019s focus on freezeouts, but a new \u201c<strong>Mystery Bounty<\/strong>\u201d event garnered plenty of attention.<\/p>\n<p>The new tournament involves bounties with unknown prize amounts until that player is eliminated. There will be <strong>100 mystery bounties<\/strong> up for grabs and those range from <strong>$2,500 to $250,000<\/strong>. The announcement of the new event created some buzz about the event on Thursday and Friday.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div data-ctaid=\"886\"><\/div>\n<h2>Big bucks bounty mystery at the WSOP<\/h2>\n<p>The <strong>$1,500 Mystery Bounty No-Limit Hold\u2019em<\/strong> (as it\u2019s being officially called) is set for <strong>June 28<\/strong> and includes a <strong>50,000 starting chip stack<\/strong>. The guarantee is no mystery \u2013\u00a0a cool <strong>$1 million<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The uniqueness of the event is certainly in the details, however. That\u2019s $1 million in bounties \u2013 and no one will know who those bounties are. Once a player busts an opponent, he or she won\u2019t know the payoff until the victorious player also busts.<\/p>\n<p>The WSOP will assign bounties at random and one lucky player will claim a <strong>bounty of $250,000<\/strong>. Those who don\u2019t claim a mystery bounty will still earn some cash for an elimination.<\/p>\n<p>Every other \u201cstandard bounty\u201d is worth $100. Here\u2019s a look at the bounties offered:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>$250,000 \u2013\u00a01 bounty<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>$100,000 \u2013\u00a03 bounties<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>$25,000 \u2013\u00a06 bounties<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>$10,000 \u2013\u00a010 bounties<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>$2,500 \u2013\u00a080 bounties<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The event will be played as a freezeout, a format the WSOP has made an effort to stress even more in 2020 (more on that below). Many players have complained about the growing number of re-entries allowed in tournaments. Along with freezeouts, the WSOP has also included several single re-entry events as well.<\/p>\n<h2>Mixed reactions among WSOP players, some praise<\/h2>\n<p>The Mystery Bounty event brings an element of lottery to the WSOP. <i>USPoker <\/i>spoke with some players this week about the new event and received some mixed reviews.<\/p>\n<p>In an era when players are trying to bring the fun back to the game, some believe this achieves some of that. That includes <strong>15-time WSOP<\/strong> <strong>bracelet<\/strong> winner <strong>Phil Hellmuth<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cLooks like a lot of fun,\u201d Hellmuth said. \u201cIt makes you try even harder to bust people, in case one of them is the big bounty.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cAs long as it is purely random, and no one knows who the bounties are, then it sounds like fun. I know I\u2019ll play it, unless I\u2019m deep deep in something else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Daniela Negreanu<\/strong> echoed some of those thoughts and feels it\u2019s another way to lure recreational poker players. Many may like the <strong>lottery angle<\/strong> and a shot at a big score, win or lose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom everyone I\u2019ve spoken to, especially the casual player, this event seems like a smash hit and enough to convince people to fly out for it,\u201d Negreanu said. \u201cWith the added element of chance and gamble, having one of those on the schedule certainly can\u2019t hurt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some players took to social media to express their support.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">I want in on the Mystery Bounty Tournament. One to play on your own dime people<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Rick Trigg (@theclaimer1984) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/theclaimer1984\/status\/1220474116366573573?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 23, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Critics concerned with \u2018gimmick\u2019 angle, randomizing payouts<\/h2>\n<p>Other players believe the Mystery Bounty may turn into more of a gimmick. <strong>Four-time WPT champion Darren Elias<\/strong> falls into that camp. He\u2019s also concerned there might be room for manipulation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile I haven\u2019t seen all the details for this event, with things like this it\u2019s of the utmost importance that everything is done transparently,\u201d Elias said, \u201cbecause there is an opportunity for people on both the inside and outside to manipulate the system and make a lot of money. Interesting gimmick, but I don\u2019t really like it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2019, Florida\u2019s <strong>Femi Fashakin<\/strong> won the <strong>Big 50<\/strong>, a $500 event celebrating the <strong>WSOP\u2019s 50th anniversary<\/strong>. He took home more than <strong>$1.1 million<\/strong> and his first bracelet. He doesn\u2019t like the element of chance involved so much in the Mystery Bounty .<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI don\u2019t think I like the bounty structure,\u201d Fashakin said. \u201cIt\u2019s basically randomizing the rewards system. It creates a possibility that one player would end up making way more than most players that finish much deeper. Respectfully, I have no desire to play in it.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Some players questioned whether there would be a celebration of big winners. That could be a nice public relations shot in the arm for poker as well as provide transparency.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Hmmm a much higher % of prize pool than normal will be going to bounties. Not sure how I feel about that. I guess really good if I hit the lotto and land the quarter milky mystery bounty. And nobody will ever know who got the bounties? He clarified some details on Friday. Players eliminated would draw for the bounty they\u2019d receive before heading to the payout window.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThey will draw in the tournament room in front of the other players, so she or he will be known,\u201d Palansky told <i>USPoker<\/i>. \u201cWe will put in the rules that their names will be public. So yes, I imagine a big deal will be made, you just never know what time of day this will occur.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div data-ctaid=\"869\"><\/div>\n<h2>WSOP continues focus on freezeouts in new series<\/h2>\n<p>Beyond the Mystery Bounty, there were some other interesting tournaments released. That included what WSOP officials are terming the \u201c<strong>Freezeout Series<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Several events like the <strong>Monster Stack<\/strong>, <strong>Main Event<\/strong>, and <strong>Mini-Main<\/strong> <strong>Event<\/strong> will keep the freezeout format. There will be more than <strong>40 events<\/strong> on the schedule utilizing the format in total.<\/p>\n<p>The Freezeout Series <strong>six-pack<\/strong> also features events priced at <strong>$500, $1,000, $1,500, $2,500, $3,000, and $5,000<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>A new <strong>$250,000<\/strong> buy-in high roller event has also been added for <strong>June 27<\/strong>. The series has also upped the ante on the annual <strong>heads-up championship<\/strong> event.<\/p>\n<p>The buy-in in the bracket-style tournament now goes from <strong>$10,000 to $25,000<\/strong>. The event is set for <strong>May 31<\/strong> and the field will be capped at <strong>64 players<\/strong> and.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNew events are always a result of player input and we\u2019re thankful to have received many great suggestions this year,\u201d WSOP Vice President <strong>Jack Effel<\/strong> said in a news release.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe 2020 WSOP is chock-full of new events, new price points, and a little mystery sure to resonate with poker players everywhere. We can\u2019t wait to open our doors in four short months to get things started.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For online poker players in <b>Nevada<\/b> and <strong>New Jersey<\/strong>, only one event has been announced so far. The series has added a new <b>$10,000<\/b> online bracelet event scheduled for <b>July 2<\/b>.
