Now, she revised her poker schedule with higher buy-ins and just a larger number of events.<\/p>\n<p>She <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pokernews.com\/news\/2018\/05\/maria-konnikova-poker-30637.htm\">told PokerNews<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cPCA was the moment where everything kind of came together. I\u2019m learning and it\u2019s sticking and I\u2019m playing well. It\u2019s a really wonderful feeling when you\u2019re studying and working to have that validated.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Konnikova originally came onto the poker scene to connect her writing with poker exploits as a form of mental strategy. Using <strong>Erik Seidel<\/strong> as her coach and keeping her dominant writing topics of <strong>psychology<\/strong>, <strong>science<\/strong>, and poker in her arsenal, she began to cash big.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"konnikova_is_unstoppable\">Konnikova is unstoppable<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Her first and best live cash came from the <strong>$1,650 PCA National<\/strong>, where she took home first place and<strong> $84,600<\/strong>. She had three other cashes in <strong>Monaco<\/strong> and three more at the <strong>World Series of Poker<\/strong> (WSOP) last year.<\/p>\n<p>Within the span of five months, she went from almost $140,000 to <a href=\"http:\/\/pokerdb.thehendonmob.com\/player.php?a=r&amp;n=531869\"><strong>$203,560<\/strong><\/a>, an approximate $63.5oo difference.<\/p>\n<p>She also got a Platinum Pass to the 2019 <strong>PokerStars Players No Limit Hold\u2019em Championship<\/strong>, valued at $30,000.<\/p>\n<p>In March, Konnikova did very well at the <strong>Asia Pacific Poker Tour<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2nd in the Turbo edition of the $5,000 No-Limit Hold\u2019em Main Event ($57,519)<\/li>\n<li>7th in the $20,000 No-Limit Hold\u2019em event ($2,434)<\/li>\n<li>28th in the $3,000 No-Limit Hold\u2019em event ($727)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In total, she snagged $60,680 from that tournament alone. A long line of authors and athletes also utilized their status as outsiders to drive their success, <a href=\"https:\/\/deadspin.com\/writer-picks-up-poker-for-book-stunt-wins-so-much-mone-1825723253\">found<strong> Deadspin<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This list includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>George Plimpton<\/strong> \u2013 utilized his tryouts with the NFL, MLB, and NHL to write multiple books<\/li>\n<li><strong>Michael McKnight<\/strong> \u2013 learned how to dunk and hit a homer (journalist for Sports Illustrated)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stefan Fatsis<\/strong> \u2013 wrote books about trying to become a kicker for the Denver Broncos and a competitive Scrabble player<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dan McLaughlin<\/strong> \u2013 tried to become a professional golfer using Malcolm Gladwell\u2019s 10,000\u2011hour theory after having never played golf before<\/li>\n<li><strong>James McManus<\/strong> \u2013 finished fifth in the 2000 WSOP in Vegas after originally being there to cover a murder case and write a book<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span id=\"more_on_her_start\">More on her start<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>A friend originally told Konnikova to look into <strong>John Von Neumann<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cTheory of Games and Economic Behavior,\u201d a book born out of a desire to solve poker, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/life-style\/maria-konnikova-poker-writer-new-yorker-monte-carlo-a8335311.html\">reported <strong>The Independent<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>After finding her own interest in the book, Konnikova tried the game, took a year off from<strong> The New Yorker<\/strong>, and started taking lessons from <strong>Erik Seidel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Now, she wins consistently because her own practice, repetition, and writing career make her a keen outside observer, a \u201cfly on the wall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmotional decision-making is exactly what poker is,\u201d she said. \u201cYou can actually see it happening. Even the most mathematical stoic players are not computers,\u201d she said to The Independent.<\/p>\n<p>Her previous writing picks up on cons and decision-making practices that make her especially able to apply that to poker.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"the_biggest_bluff_still_coming_status_of_her_book\">\u2018The Biggest Bluff\u2019 still coming; status of her book<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Konnikova adjusted her book schedule to come out in the <strong>summer or fall of 2019<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The book, to be called \u201cThe Biggest Bluff\u201d, will discuss how poker can be used to <strong>make better everyday decisions<\/strong>. While Erik Seidel has been her primary coach, <strong>Jason Koon<\/strong> and <strong>Isaac Haxton<\/strong> have also come to her aid.<\/p>\n<p>Konnikova has already touched on what makes her different from others, like <strong>Victoria Coren Mitchell<\/strong> (Observer columnist turned poker player), who have tried this before.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Oh I\u2019m certainly far from the first writer to play poker! I started this project with absolutely zero background in it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But she won\u2019t fall out of writing.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI\u2019m not abandoning writing. I really want to give it my all, but this is for the book ultimately. There\u2019s definitely one version of the future where I still write and play poker professionally.
