{"id":7106,"date":"2018-05-25T18:57:25","date_gmt":"2018-05-25T18:57:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pokerscout.com\/?p=7106"},"modified":"2018-05-28T05:08:21","modified_gmt":"2018-05-28T05:08:21","slug":"pennsylvanias-darren-elias-nabs-record-setting-fourth-wpt-title","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pokerscout.com\/pennsylvanias-darren-elias-nabs-record-setting-fourth-wpt-title\/","title":{"rendered":"Pennsylvania\u2019s Darren Elias Nabs Record-Setting Fourth WPT Title"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Greater Philadelphia\u2019s <strong>Darren Elias<\/strong> managed to make <strong>World Poker Tour<\/strong>\u00a0history this week.<\/p>\n<p>Elias became the<strong> first player to capture four WPT titles<\/strong> after winning the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldpokertour.com\/event\/main-tour-wpt-bobby-baldwin-classic-season-2017-2018\/#eventTab2\"><strong>Season XVI WPT Bobby Baldwin Classic<\/strong><\/a> for $387,580 at the <strong>Aria Resort &amp; Casino<\/strong> in Las Vegas, Nevada on Wednesday. The three WPT titles he previously won are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2017<strong> Fallsview Poker Classic<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>2014 <strong>WPT Caribbean (St. Maarten)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>2014<strong> Borgata Poker Open<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Prior to this week, Elias was one of five players with three WPT titles. The other triple threats are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Anthony Zinno<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Carlos Mortensen<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Chino Rheem<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Gus Hansen<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span id=\"the_new_wpt_bobby_baldwin_classic\">The new WPT Bobby Baldwin Classic<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The $10,000 buy-in WPT Bobby Baldwin Classic is a <strong>new event<\/strong> on the tour\u2019s schedule. It drew<strong> 162 entries<\/strong>, creating a <strong>$1,555,200 prize pool<\/strong> that paid the <strong>top 21 finishers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The final table of six was livestreamed online by poker content subscription service <strong>PokerGO<\/strong>, which has a\u00a0studio at Aria. Elias entered a stacked final six with a<strong> massive chip lead he never relinquished<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Two-time WPT champion\u2019s <strong>Jonathan Little<\/strong> ($74,520) and <strong>Sam Panzica<\/strong> ($97,795) were the first to fall. They were soon followed by <strong>2016 WPT L.A Poker Classic Champion Dietrich Fast<\/strong>, who finished fourth for $130,895.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2015 World Series of Poker Main Event Champion Joe McKeehen<\/strong> had a chance to win the <strong>Hublot WPT Season XVI Player of the Year<\/strong> award by taking down the tournament. The WPT POY prize package includes a <strong>Hublot Big Bang Unico World Poker Tour Limited Edition watch<\/strong> and <strong>complimentary accommodations<\/strong> for all Season XVII WPT Main Tour events.<\/p>\n<p>However, that package and POY honors will go to <strong>double WPT Season XVI title winner Art Papazyan<\/strong> after Philadelphia\u2019s McKeehen finished third for $178,610.<\/p>\n<p>Elias endured through a 103-hand heads-up match with tough Taiwanese pro <strong>Kitty Kuo<\/strong> to capture the title and vault his career tournament earnings up to<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/pokerdb.thehendonmob.com\/player.php?a=r&amp;n=97522\">$6,024,703<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Kuo was looking to become just the second female player to win an open WPT event. However, despite doubling up three times and nearly evening up the stacks, she was never able to wrestle the chip lead from Elias\u2019 hands. Kuo had to settle for<strong> $248,380<\/strong> in second-place money.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"four-time_wpt_champ_darren_elias\">Four-time WPT champ Darren Elias<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Elias, who was born in Boston, Massachusetts but spent most of his formative years in <strong>Erie, Pennsylvania<\/strong>.\u00a0He now lives in Cherry Hill, New Jersey in the Greater Philadelphia Area.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to more than $6 million in live tournament earnings, Elias has reportedly won more than $3.8 million playing <strong>online poker<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Elias told WPT staff his success on the tour can be attributed to his success against US players:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt was cool to do something no one has ever done. I think I do well against the American pros and American recreational players who play in these more so than the European players. These WPTs are mostly in America with mostly American players, so I think that\u2019s a lot of the reason for my success.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Next up for the WPT is the season-ending <strong>WPT Tournament of Champions<\/strong>. It kicked off at Aria Thursday, drawing a field of<strong> 80<\/strong> current and former WPT champions. Of course, the field includes the now four-time WPT champion Elias.
