But what comes next?<\/p>\n<p>Politicians and press have touted the new casinos as being a force for regeneration in<strong> Atlantic City<\/strong>, bringing in <strong>thousands of jobs and millions of visitors<\/strong>. Estimates expected <strong>over a million visitors<\/strong> to AC over the opening weekend.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">The city is expecting up to one million people to visit Thursday through Sunday with the opening of Hard Rock Hotel &amp; Casino and Ocean Resort Casino, as well as a weekend beach concert. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/jEC8eIf1rT\">https:\/\/t.co\/jEC8eIf1rT<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Molly Bilinski (@ACPressMollyB) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ACPressMollyB\/status\/1012021960971313153?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 27, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The success or otherwise of the new casinos will be judged not by the hype, but by the <strong>hard numbers<\/strong>. For example, the revenue figures for the casinos produced each month by the <strong>New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement<\/strong> (DGE).<\/p>\n<p>Reality is that the number of casinos in Atlantic City just went up from seven to nine. That is\u00a0a <strong>28-percent increase <\/strong>in market supply. The DGE numbers will tell the tale of whether demand has increased in line with the extra supply, or whether the demand is not as elastic as everyone hopes.<\/p>\n<p>Aficionados of <strong>The Wire<\/strong> may remember <strong>Stringer Bell\u2019s<\/strong> hilarious attempts to explain macroeconomics to his drug dealing subordinates:<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container media-container\"><\/div>\n<p>The Hard Rock and Ocean Resort Casinos are operating on the belief that they can succeed where their predecessors, <strong>The Revel<\/strong> and <strong>Trump Taj Mahal<\/strong> failed.<\/p>\n<p>The rest of the AC casinos<strong> also have skin in the game<\/strong>. Meanwhile, players who want the online casino games can find plenty of New Jersey options from the other AC casinos.<\/p>\n<p>And to go back to the Stringer Bell video, therein lies the rub. What Ocean Resort and The Hard Rock offer is only <strong>a variation on a theme<\/strong>;\u00a0tweaks here and there, like the Ocean Resort\u2019s <strong>Exhale Spa<\/strong> and the Top Golf or Hard Rock\u2019s rock star memorabilia.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s very little the casinos can do to make themselves <strong>radically<\/strong> different from each other. Price, customer service,\u00a0and customers\u2019 individual preferences will play a major role in what market share each casino can sustain in the market.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, when supply increases, <strong>price usually drops<\/strong>, so customers can expect the next twelve months to present a cornucopia of <strong>new marketing promotions<\/strong> and special offers. Customer loyalty schemes will be<strong> even more valuable<\/strong> to both players and casinos.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, the <strong>hype should not be written off<\/strong>.
